Twinsburg City School District

I t is my pleasure to present to you the 2018-19 Twinsburg City School District Annual Report. Our Annual Report highlights events from each of our schools as well as updates from our District departments. The Annual Report also introduces some of the exciting initiatives planned for the coming school year. A calendar of events is included, however, a more

comprehensive calendar of the District’s events can be found on our District website: www.twinsburg.k12.oh.us

Each school year, the Twinsburg Board of Education establishes District Goals. The District Goals for the 2018-19 school year were student centered and focused upon:

• addressing the needs of the whole child through innovative programming while preparing students to be enrolled in post-secondary schooling, enlisted in the military, or to be competitively employed;

• operating in a fiscally responsible manner by utilizing the benchmarks identified in the Financial Strategic Planning Flow Chart in order to support educational opportunities;

• developing a comprehensive District communication plan that engages members of the community; and

• addressing the immediate and long-term needs regarding facilities and grounds by continuing to implement and update the Facilities Assessment while remaining cognizant of the District’s financial resources.

In September 2019, the Twinsburg City School District will publish its sixth annual Quality Profile. The Quality Profile will highlight our school district’s Academics, Arts, Parent & Community Involvement, Student Leadership & Activities, Student Services and Fiscal Stewardship. The Quality Profile will provide our residents with information about the overall educational value of the Twinsburg City School District. The Quality Profile is meant as an informational tool that gauges the progress our school district has made while providing information about areas of growth and accomplishments for our students, staff and community.

Our Quality Profile will provide an overview of the achievements of our staff and students. Here are just a few of our highlights:

• In May 2019, the U.S. News & World Report ranked Twinsburg High School #15 in Northeast Ohio, #37 in Ohio out of 916 Ohio high schools and #1151 in the U.S. out of more than 17,000 high schools. This means that Twinsburg High School ranks in the top 7% of all high schools nationally;

• RB Chamberlin Middle School and George G. Dodge Intermediate School were designated 2018 Overall A Award recipients from the Ohio Department of Education for an overall summative grade of “A” on the Ohio School Report Card in 2018;

• For the fifth year in a row, 100% of Samuel Bissell Elementary School’s third graders met the requirements of the Third Grade Reading Guarantee;

• Wilcox Primary School’s 5-Star Step Up to Quality Preschool Program expanded through the addition of a new Kindergarten Preparatory Program; and

• All five of the District’s schools implemented Makerspaces or Makerspace activities which challenge students to create and learn through hands-on, personalized experiences.

During the 2018-19 school year, the District engaged parents, residents, staff members and students in Action Teams in efforts to develop a new Strategic Plan. Each Action Team focused upon a specific area: Academics, Communications, Culture & Climate, Facilities & Grounds, Finances, and Safety. The Strategic Plan will set the District’s priorities, will focus our energy and our resources, will strengthen our operations and will ensure that our staff members are aligned with the desires of our community members in working toward common goals. The Strategic Plan will ultimately be a living document, reviewed annually, in efforts to determine the progress made toward the goals so that the District remains focused on providing the very best opportunities for our students. The Twinsburg Board of Education and I thank the members of the Action Teams for their commitment to this important work.

In closing, I want to thank the residents of the City of Twinsburg, Twinsburg Township, and the Village of Reminderville for your support of the $4 million renewal levy that was passed in May 2019. Thanks to that support, we will continue to provide our students with excellent educational programming and services. I sincerely appreciate your confidence in the Twinsburg City School District. We pledge to continue being good stewards of your tax dollars while assisting every child in realizing their greatest potential.

Yours in education,

Kathi Powers, Superintendent

Nutrition and Wellness Mark Bindus, Food Service Supervisor

330.486.2448

All of our District’s schools are USDA certified as HealthierUS Schools. We are part of only 4% of school districts nationwide that exceed all current USDA guidelines for food served in our schools. We always strive to serve food that is fresh, healthy, and appealing. Our goal at the Twinsburg City School District is to serve our students the healthiest lunches possible, and we do that by promoting our school meals over a la carte options, making more from scratch meals, incorporating more fresh fruit and vegetables, healthy whole grains and less sodium and sugar. There will be a slight increase in meal prices for the 2019-20 school year. Here are our prices: $3.25 for lunch at Twinsburg High School, RB Chamberlin Middle School and George G. Dodge Intermediate School, $3.00 at Samuel Bissell Elementary and Wilcox Primary School. Breakfast price is $1.75 for all schools (add .50 cents for a hash brown upgrade at Twinsburg High School).

In the 2018-19 School Year, Twinsburg City School District took a giant step forward in making our lunches healthier every day, by bringing in Cleveland Crisp Lettuce as an everyday offering. Cleveland Crisp is a dark green lettuce that is grown locally and hydroponically in Cleveland at Green City Growers. Our new everyday lettuce is Non-GMO, herbicide and pesticide free, healthy and delicious.

In the 2018-19 School Year, Twinsburg Wellness hosted our first ever Tiger Wellness Tailgate Party. This healthy street fair will be held once again on Friday, September 6, 2019, from 5 pm to 7 pm, on the access road just outside of Tiger Stadium and will include lots of free healthy activities for kids like our 2nd Annual Tiger Survivor Challenge, face painting, a dance stage, nutrition, and a Physical Education booth and lots more. There will be a football toss fundraiser for The Emergency Assistance Center, basket raffles, Yo-Dots Dippin Dots for sale, and lots of other food items for sale by our booster groups. Please join us on Friday, September 6 for our 2nd Annual Tiger Wellness Tailgate Party hosted by the TCSD Wellness Committee in cooperation with University Hospitals.

In the 2018-19 School Year, the Twinsburg City School District continued to partner with the NFL and Fuel up to Play 60 to offer Tiger Breakfast Rewards. Students in grades K-6 were encouraged to eat breakfast at school, and when they did, they were eligible to win some very cool monthly prizes.

In May 2019, we held our 12th Annual Tiger Spirit Run. This year we donated a dollar from every registration to The Emergency Assistance Center. In all, we had 138 students, parents, staff, and community members participate in this rainy, but great morning of family fitness. This year we had a class-by-class

participation contest in which the classes (Grades K-6) that had the most students participate won a “Popsicle Party” for their class and a “Dress like a PE Teacher Day” for their teacher. Our next Tiger Spirit Run will be held on Saturday, May 2, 2020, at 10 a.m. at Tiger Stadium.

The 2018-19 School Year was the ninth full year of our Fruit & Veggie Patrol. The Fruit and Veggie Patrol is a positive reinforcement initiative at Wilcox Primary School and Samuel Bissell Elementary School that once a month rewards students with small prizes when we catch them eating fruits and vegetables.

In January 2019, we marked our fifth full year of Paws on Child Hunger. Paws on Child Hunger is the Twinsburg City School District’s weekend backpack program for students in grades Pre-K to 8. Our partnership with The Emergency Assistance Center, along with contributions from parents, staff and community members, makes this weekly program possible and provides needy students with a backpack of healthy, kid-friendly foods (apples, carrots, cereal, sunflower seeds, and nutrient-dense snacks).

2018-19 School Year Meal Prices

Lunch: $3.25 – THS, RBC & Dodge $3.00 – Bissell & Wilcox Breakfast: $1.75 – all schools (hash brown potato upgrade for .50 cents at THS).

Our program aligns to the Early Learning and Development Standards, and we received a 5-Star Rating in Step Up to Quality from the Ohio Department of Education for the third year in a row.

Child Find: Child Find is the process of locating, evaluating, and identifying children with disabilities who may need special education and related services. The Twinsburg City School District provides early childhood programs for children with identified handicaps and comprehensive programs and related services for children ages three through 21 with disabilities.

PBIS: Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a District initiative that encompasses Preschool through 12th grade. Through PBIS, Twinsburg City School District is addressing positive relationships, clear expectations, and consistently acknowledging and correcting behaviors. Two of our buildings (Samuel Bissell Elementary and George G.Dodge Elementary) received state recognition at the Ohio PBIS Showcase.

Beech Brook: The Twinsburg City School District has a partnership with Beech Brook to offer school-based therapy and community support for all of our students. Working hand-in-hand with children, teachers, administrators, families, and our community, Beech Brook therapists can help children to address their mental health problems. Individual and family counseling is available for a wide variety of issues in our District’s five school buildings. Drugs and alcohol, adolescent mental health, and dealing with trauma are focal points of this partnership

Parent Mentor: The Parent Mentor Project is a program funded through the Ohio Department of Education. This program is designed to support families in understanding the special education process by providing information to become active partners for their children with special needs.

Supporting our Students through State and Federally Funded Programs

During the 2018-19 school year, the Twinsburg City School District received nearly 1.4 million dollars of state and federal funding through a number of grants for which the District applies each summer. These grants provide support services for our children. Parent and community input on the use of this funding is welcome and encouraged.

Federal funds received during the 2018-19 school year included:

• Title I ($355,096) provided funding for reading and math instruction for students needing additional help in grades one through eight.

• Title IIA ($109,411) funds provided staff development in various subject areas, including funds to cover substitute teachers.

• Title III ($12,394) monies helped fund the teacher for students who are English Language Learners.

• Title IV ($39,089) monies for technology, innovative programming, and substitutes.

• IDEA-B ($813,813) funding was earmarked for special education services, such as instructional assistants, staff development, collaboration among regular education teachers and special education teachers, and out-of-district tuition.

• The Parent-Mentor Grant ($25,000) provided funding for a parent who works as a liaison for the District and with families who have students with special needs.

Qualifications of Teachers

Wilcox PRIMARY SCHOOL Lynn Villa, Principal Scott Astey, Assistant Principal

For Twinsburg’s youngest learners, “the journey begins here” at Wilcox Primary School. During the 2018-19 school year:

• The American Academy of Pediatrics recently published a report reinforcing the importance of “old-fashioned toys”, hands-on learning, and problem-solving experiences for children under the age of five. At the beginning of the 2018-19 school year, the 5-Star Step Up to Quality preschool program expanded through the addition of a new Kindergarten Preparatory Program (KPP). This program focuses on four- and five-year old children in the year before entering kindergarten with a project-based instructional model. Sixty-four (64) children were accepted into the half-day sessions, which ran parallel to the long-standing Integrated Preschool Program (IPP). Scholarships were offered for 20% of students who demonstrated financial need, aligning with the Twinsburg City School District’s free/reduced lunch program demographic data. End-of-year data indicated that all preschool students showed growth in their language, literacy, and number sense from these early learning experiences.

• Makerspace toolkits helped Wilcox Primary School teachers engage kindergarten and first-grade students in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) project-based learning during the 2018-19 school year. A new “creation corner” has been established so students can experiment and explore each week during library time.

• Social/Emotional Learning has become an integral component of the curriculum. Our full-time school counselor and social worker lead students in guidance lessons related to the Zones of Regulation program where students learn about their feelings and how to appropriately regulate their emotions. Each morning, students recite the Wilcox Pledge where the school community agrees to “be responsible, respectful, caring, and safe”; Mindful Music Moments offers a few minutes of mindful breathing while listening to music from the Cleveland Orchestra; and students in the Smile Patrol greet friends with a warm “hello” when they arrive. Also, teachers participated in a book study by reading and discussing the impact of “Trauma-Sensitive Schools” by Susan E. Craig.

• Wilcox Primary School remains proud of our positive relationship with the Twinsburg VFW. Wilcox hosted over 150 veterans and active duty military personnel for the 15th annual “Bring a Veteran to Lunch” event. Wilcox students also accompanied the VFW by walking alongside them at the Memorial Day Parade, and our veterans visited Wilcox to cook hamburgers and hot dogs for faculty and staff during Teacher Appreciation Week. These are just a few of the interactions Wilcox students and staff engage in to honor our military and that helped earn the Purple Star Award designation from the Ohio Department of Education.

• “Wilcox Reads Week” has become a tradition that the entire school community loves. Each family receives a book and reads the same chapters at home each night, posting highlights to social media at #WilcoxReads. Students do activities at school, including a daily trivia contest, writing, and a book scavenger hunt. The most recent book was “Zoey and Sassafras: Dragons and Marshmallows”, which features science, magic, and kindness as the main themes. Students loved the opening assembly which featured a visit by the book’s author, Asia Citro.

Looking ahead to 2019-20

• A key theme for Wilcox Primary School in the 2019-20 school year will be using innovative methods to teach students the basics. The goal of Wilcox faculty and staff members is to help our community’s youngest learners: develop good citizenship, build a strong foundation in literacy and number sense, and be able to regulate their own emotions.

• Teacher Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) will engage in collaborative work regarding oral language and vocabulary development, expanding STEAM in all classrooms, meaningful assessment practices, and offering universal supports for students’ emotional growth. We hope to partner with Twinsburg High School to provide leadership opportunities for older students while bringing role models to Wilcox for our younger students.

“The journey begins here.”

Samuel Bissell ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Misty Johnson, Principal Scott Winter, Assistant Principal

Where Tigers Learn To Roar!Samuel Bissell Elementary School is where Tigers learn to ROAR! Our staff is committed to educating the whole-child and sharing in the success of students! A special THANK YOU goes out to our parents and community, our hard-working students, and our dedicated staff for a great 2018-19 School Year. Here are a few highlights:

• Samuel Bissell Elementary School was the recipient of the PBIS Bronze Award by the Ohio Department of Education for positively rewarding student achievement and behavior choices through the school’s PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) program. A team of teachers traveled to Columbus on November 29, 2018, to receive the award, which recognizes schools that have implemented school-wide supports at the Tier I Level. Samuel Bissell Elementary School’s PBIS plan consists of various reward systems, including Golden Paw and GRIT Tickets. Students are also encouraged to perform kind acts through the school’s “Random Acts of Kindness” program. The plan also includes educational components through students learning how to identify their emotions through Zones of Regulation and coming together as a school community as part of the school’s Community of Caring initiative, where students and teachers from different classes eat lunch together and discuss the importance of making positive behavior choices.

• Teachers took part in a book study during the 2018-19 school year. Each staff member read the book, “Trauma-Sensitive Schools: Learning Communities Transforming Children’s Lives, K-5”. The book highlighted the importance of school personnel having an understanding of how trauma can affect students and ways to best support students in a school setting.

• Samuel Bissell Elementary School incorporated Mindful Mondays into instruction during the 2018-19 school year. Students from different classrooms met each Monday to practice a variety of mindful strategies to help them to calm their minds/bodies better and focus their thoughts. Each month a different topic was featured - breathing, visualization, and movement.

• The Makerspace movement found its way to Samuel Bissell Elementary School during the 2018-19 school year. Students were able to use their imagination to build, collaborate, design, and play during their weekly library visits. Thanks to our Bissell Makerspace committee, support from the Makerspace initiative from the Twinsburg Board of Education, and generous donations from Bissell stakeholders, teachers have a Makerspace lesson plan and materials so their class can take a challenge, brainstorm and build as a team every week.

• Samuel Bissell Elementary School students participated in the 2019 Doodle for Google Contest. This year’s theme was “When I grow up, I hope...”. Bissell students spent several weeks in the Computer Lab exploring their hopes, creating a rough draft, and planning their final artwork. Doodle for Google is an annual contest open to all students in grades K -12. Students are invited to create their own Google Doodle for the chance to have it featured on Google.com and win college scholarships and other prizes.

• Samuel Bissell Elementary School students made positive changes through our Change Agent program during the 2018-19 school year. Twenty-four students met regularly to discuss school-related matters, such as student safety, school beautification, and student recognition. Students took the lead on ensuring bulletin boards were stapled down correctly. They also put post-it notes on lockers with positive messages written on them and displayed posters within the school, reminding students to be safe when walking in the hallway.

We are forever grateful to our PTA who helped fund many initiatives, programs, and events at Samuel Bissell Elementary School during the 2018-19 school year:

• Providing each student with $6.00 to spend at each of our two Book Fairs.

• Paying to transport our students to the Cleveland Aquarium and Hale Farm and Village.

• Covering the cost of lunch for our annual 3rd Grade Picnic.

• Making available $3,785.44 in grant money to buy instructional materials for our students.

• Spending countless hours putting up bulletin boards to highlight different programs.

• Hosting Teacher Appreciation Week activities that included, breakfast, snacks, lunch, gift cards, and massages for the staff.

The upcoming 2019-20 school year will be filled with learning experiences, which offer students the best educational experience possible.

• Samuel Bissell Elementary School will continue to employ the co-teaching model during the 2019-20 school year. In a co-teaching environment, an Intervention Specialist or Instructional Assistant team teach in the general education classroom.

• Samuel Bissell Elementary School staff will continue to offer students the opportunity to learn through the blended learning approach. The instructional approach was started during the 2018-19 school year, where students worked at their own pace and choose their path in the classroom.

“A Commitment To Learning For All”

Our classes began their “Chain Reaction” by creating paper chains which were displayed throughout the building. For each act of kindness, students receive a “link” to a chain. These links were connected to other links and displayed throughout the building. Our goal is to continue to build onto the links during the upcoming school year. We would love to see our chain stretched throughout the community so that all can view our kindness.

We Can’t Do It Without Our Volunteers We are so proud of all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes at George G. Dodge Intermediate School. We know we can’t accomplish all of our great programming without the help of our volunteer community, which includes our PTA. During the 2018-19 school year, our volunteers and PTA supported many of the events that make our school a special place to learn and grow.

• Our PTA and volunteers supported our annual Father’s Walk, which welcomed over 600 fathers and father figures to our school in support of the Summit County Fatherhood Initiative. In addition, we had over 15 Twinsburg employees join the event to represent and walk with students.

• PTA and volunteers led our weekly popcorn sales on Fridays. This activity helped to support our PAWS on Child Hunger initiative, which provides nutritious snacks to students in need.

• PTA and volunteers hosted our annual Father (Father Figure) Dance as well as our annual Mother/Son events this year.

• Our PTA hosted a Math Mania to encourage our students to practice and apply much-needed math skills. Students won prizes for their hard work and efforts.

• Three Book Fairs were held this year, thanks to our PTA and volunteers. Students were able to purchase high-quality reading material to support strong reading skills and encourage a love for reading.

• Our PTA and volunteers also understood the importance of supporting the adults in our school community. They provided much-needed snacks and encouragement throughout the school year to the staff.

• Breakfast of Champions is a strong tradition at George G. Dodge Intermediate School. This program occurs at the end of the school year to recognize students for excellent citizenship throughout the year. Our PTA and volunteers provided food and support to ensure the success of this event.

Purple Star designation This year, George G. Dodge Intermediate School became a Purple Star School. Purple Star is a designation initiated in 2017 to recognize schools that support military families and students. When servicemen and servicewomen serve our country, we understand that service impacts all parts of their family life, especially the lives of the children. Our goal as a Purple Star School is to support our military families and help them connect to available resources. Our first event was our annual Fathers Walk, where we paid tribute to military families.

Recognizing our Safety Forces At George G. Dodge Intermediate School, we recognize the critical role that our safety forces play in the community. The police and fire departments from the three cities that make up our school community have been a source of pride and security. For this reason, we initiated a program to recognize our safety forces for their support to our community’s safety. The event took place on December 14, 2018, where members of the Twinsburg Fire Department, Twinsburg Police Department, Summit County Sheriff’s Department, Reminderville Police Department and Reminderville Fire Department were invited to join us for breakfast and a tour. This was an excellent opportunity for our safety forces to build great relationships with our school community, and get a chance to tour our facilities, encouraging a safer environment for our students.

Let our Kindness Shine! While kindness is a word many are using, we hope that this becomes the word we love at George G. Dodge Intermediate School. We kicked off the school year with a visit from Bob and Bogart promoting One Million Acts of Kindness on his bus tour around the country. As a result, students took the initiative to create multiple Kindness Clubs, a Kindness Wall, and carried out positive energy throughout our school community. We joined Twinsburg High School by committing to Rachel’s Challenge. Rachel’s Challenge is based on the life and writings of Rachel Joy Scott, who was the first victim of the Columbine school shootings in 1999. Rachel’s Challenge exists to equip and inspire individuals to replace acts of violence, bullying, and negativity with acts of respect, kindness, and compassion. Through her example, Rachel’s Challenge is making a positive impact on the lives of millions of people every year. Through this work, our students signed a banner committing to promoting a kind environment and starting a “Chain Reaction” of kindness through actions and behavior.
