Are you interested in serving on a board or commission? There are 17 separate and independent board and commissions in the City of Oak Park that operate in an advisory capacity to City Council and City Adminis-tration. To be eligible to serve on an Oak Park board or commission the candidate must be a resident of the City of Oak Park for at least two years; be able to regularly attend the meetings; and be energized and willing to actively participate. Applications are ac-cepted by January for February appointments and by July for August appointments. Applica-tions are available at the City Clerk’s Office. For more information, visit the City’s website at www.OakParkMI.gov or contact Lisa Vecchio, Deputy City Clerk and Director of Elections, via email at [email protected].
When is a Snow Emergency Declared? A snow emergency is declared when four or more inches of snow falls or other hazardous conditions necessitate. When a snow emergency is declared, parking is not permitted on City streets until the snow emergency has been lifted. This allows for the Department of Public Works to efficiently clear the roadways.
What Should You Do During a Snow Emergency? Until the Snow Emergency has been lifted by City Manager Erik Tungate, all vehicles must be removed from curbside and parked off the street. The City has eight areas within the City designated for overflow parking. They are:
n Eleven Mile Off-Street Parking Lots n Victoria Park Parking Lots n Shepherd Park Parking Lots
n City Complex Parking Lots n Best Park Parking Lot n Key Park Parking Lot n Lessenger Park Parking Lot n Dewey Park Parking Lot
For a map of available snow emergency parking locations within Oak Park, visit http://bit.ly/OPSnowEmergencyMap .
How Will You Know When a Snow Emergency Has Been Called? As a general rule, if a significant snow event is anticipated, City Manager Erik Tungate will proactively declare a Snow Emergency in advance to allow residents to properly prepare. There are several ways in which residents can become informed of a Snow Emergency, they include:
n Website: Log onto the City’s website at http://www.oakparkmi.gov/. An alert will
be posted in the lower right of your screen and in the front page news.
n Community eBlast: Enroll to receive Com-munity eBlasts that arrive in your email. To enroll, visit http://bit.ly/OakParkSignUp
n Robo Call Notification: Enroll to receive robo calls on your landline or your cell phone. To enroll, visit http://bit.ly/OakParkSignUp.
n Text Message Notification: Enroll to receive text message notification, visit http://bit.ly/OakParkSignUp.
n Social Media Posts: Follow us on the City’s Facebook or Twitter accounts @CityOfOakPark.
n Cable TV: Tune into the City’s Comcast Cable TV15 and 16.
n Local Television Stations: The city notifies the following local television stations of snow emergencies: ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox2Detroit.
n Local Radio Stations: The city notifies the following local radio stations of snow emergencies: WWJ and WJR.
How is Roadway Snow Removal Prioritized? During snow emergencies the Department of Public Works prioritizes the roadways. In general, the City crews treat and plow roadways in the following order:
n Primary Roadways - Primary routes are the first priority for plowing and de-icing. Primary routes include major streets, snow emergency routes, around schools, and to and from medical facilities. These roadways include the I-696 service drives, Greenfield, Coolidge, 11 Mile Road, and Nine Mile Road.
n Secondary Roadways - Secondary routes are main and heavily traveled thoroughfares. These include streets like Oak Park Boulevard, Scotia, Rosewood, Church, Capital, Lincoln, and Northfield.
n Residential Intersections - Tertiary priority is made to residential intersections so that vehicles can properly stop and
proceed safely at intersection roadways. Residential roadways are plowed when appropriate; typically when four or more inches of snow is present, or other circumstances necessitate.
What are the City’s Snow Removal Requirements? The following are snow removal provisions contained in Chapter 66, Section 166-167 of the City’s Code of Ordinance:
n Snow and ice must be removed from all sidewalks.
n When it stops snowing during daylight hours, snow and ice must be removed within 12 hours.
n When it stops snowing during night time, snow and ice must be removed by 6:00 p.m. the next day.
n It is considered a public nuisance to allow ice and snow to accumulate on sidewalks.
n Failure to remove snow and/or ice from all sidewalks within the time frames above may result in citations being issued or City removal at the homeowner’s expense.
Snow EmergenciesWHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW
Be PreparedSNOW EMERGENCIES AND EXTREME WEATHER
When winter is around the corner, it’s never too early to prepare for snow and extreme cold weather. Winter storms can occur from early fall to spring. Here are some tips to help prepare for a snow storm or extreme cold weather:
Before Snow Arrives n Enroll in the City’s Emergency
Notification System – Enroll in the City’s Emergency Notification System. Contact [email protected] with your contact information to enroll in emergency alerts from the City via email, text, or phone.
n Download the FEMA Apps and Information – Download FEMA’s app for National Weather Alerts at https://www.fema.
gov/mobileapp and helpful snow emergency guides at www.fema.gov and www.ready.gov.
n Build a Home and Vehicle Kit – Prepare an emergency kit that will last for at least three days of self-sufficiency. For helpful snow emergency guides, visit FEMA (www.fema.gov) and Ready.gov (https://www.ready.gov/winter-weather).
n Winterize Your Home – Insulate your home and have weather stripping, storm windows or window coverings on windows and doors. Check fireplaces, carbon monoxide detectors, fire extinguishers, and fire alarms yearly.
n Prepare Your Vehicle – Check windshield wipers, windshield wiper fluid, antifreeze,
brakes, exhaust system, fuel and air filters, tires, battery, heater, defroster, jumper cables, cell phone charger, hazard lights, and vehicle emergency kit.
n Maintain Your Medical Equipment – If you require power to maintain medical equipment, consider purchasing alternative sources of power, such as a generator.
n Contract a Snow Removal Service – If unable to remove snow, make arrangements for snow removal services. Sources of assistance include United Way 2-1-1, OLSHA, Area on Aging 1B offices, neighborhood groups, contractors, local churches, Red Cross, and family members.
During Snow Emergencies n Tune into the Weather Channel – The
National Weather Service provides active alerts and status updates during weather emergencies. Visit www.weather.gov online or KEC63 NOAA Weather Radio for more information.
n Stay Informed by the City – During emergencies, there are a number of ways in which the City provides emergency information. Simply, log onto the City’s website (www.OakParkMI.gov); follow the City on social media (Facebook and Twitter @CityOfOakPark); and check for email eBlasts, robo calls, voicemails or text messages (if you have enrolled). Tune into your local television, cable or radio stations (ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox2Detroit and radio stations WWJ, WJR or Comcast OPTV 15) for snow emergency information.
n Follow Proper Snow Removal Guidelines - It is a public nuisance to allow ice and snow to accumulate on sidewalks, therefore residents are required to remove snow and ice within 12 hours after snow stops falling during daylight hours, or by 6 p.m. the day after snow stops falling during night hours.
n Stay Safe and Healthy – Stay warm indoors during a storm and walk carefully on outside walkways.
n Protect Pets – Bring pets indoors, if possible.
Keep outdoor pets safe by sheltering them from extreme weather. Make sure pets have access to food and non-frozen drinking water.
n Shovel Safely – Wear appropriate warm clothing, mittens, boots, scarf, and hat. Avoid overexertion by taking breaks and pushing the snow, versus lifting it. Take proper precautions if you experience signs of frostbite, hypothermia or heart attack.
n Drive Safely – Drive only when necessary. Bring vehicle emergency kit and car scraper. Maintain safe fuel levels.
During Power Outages or for Shelter from Extreme Weather n City Warming Centers – The City of Oak
Park will open Warming Centers at the Community Center when the weather forecast calls for low temperatures, or a combination of precipitation, wind chill, wind, and temperatures that “feel like” they are 10 degrees or below.
n Sheltering Assistance Programs – Consult with FEMA for emergency shelter options. Text SHELTER and a zip code to 43362 (4FEMA). Visit www.DisasterAssistance.gov and www.ready.gov/shelter for more information. If you have pets ask for a list of shelters that accept pets.
This list is meant to be helpful, but may not be all-inclusive. Visit www.FEMA.gov and www.Ready.gov for more information.
