a MESSAGEfrom our Mayor

City of Macedoniajanuary 2014

There was a bad accident at Ledge Road Bridge Sunday evening 12-15-2013.

It comes at a time when we are meeting with the Norfolk-Southern Railroad to fix their bridge that is crumbling down. We had a special meeting with representatives from Norfolk Southern and their lawyer last week. I feel it is the railroads responsibility to fix the bridge because this existing bridge also infringes on the Ledge Road right of way. A new bridge should replace this bridge built in 1899, and make it consistent to present thoroughfare standards. It should be wider and taller than the dilapidated relic now being used by our residents, businesses, and visitors. Will it collapse some day and cause derailment? If it did, it would be catastrophic.

ODOT was present at the meeting held with Norfolk Southern about the Ledge Road bridge held last week in my office. The I-271 bridge abutments for the big bridge above are right next to the Ledge Road bridge. Will widening the overhead I-271 bridge there require working with the railroad? Is this the time to make this one big project like we did with our on ramp off of Route 82?? I think that door might be open.

There was a baby in the back seat of one of the cars involved in the accident under the Ledge Road bridge. What may happen in the future?

ODOT said "the future is now" to fix the north bound ramp off of Route 82 and to widen Route 82 to 6 lanes.

The future may be "now" for the Ledge Road bridge also.

Everyone survived this crash.....

this time.

I have also been in contact with our Congressman David Joyce, PUCO, State officials, ODOT, and County officials about this crumbling Ledge Road bridge that is missing some of the sandstone blocks. Channel 3 has been kind enough to champion our cause with two separate newsreels. If you have our City App on your smart phone, you can look under news on our App and watch the newscast spots on your phone. If you have a com-puter you can see them on our website.

While we are thinking of technology...Please remember to use our texting service 'Nixle' concerning police dispatch texts. If you or your friends do texting, you can receive these texts by sending our zip code (44056) to 888777. It is a wonderful way to have us keep you in the loop for your safety and convenience.

A lot has happened in Macedonia this year, and next year is looking good with new stores, and offices, and assisted living facilities coming our way. We also continue to improve our City infrastructure and maintain safer streets. This is an exciting town and it is headed in the right direction to prosper.

Speaking of prosperity…. I was invited to the soft opening of the newest area attraction. I am a Rocksinner. I have been to the Hard Rock Rocksino and it is fabulous. What a tremendous attraction right here in our own back yard. People will travel from all over just to say they have been there. And they will come. Billions are spent each year on gambling and that doesn’t include passing on a hill, getting married, or buying the newest gadget.

Thank you for letting me serve as your Mayor this year and I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year.

Monthly UpdateDiana Augustine, Executive Secretary

Congratulations to Employee of the MonthDave Aberth, Firefighter/Paramedic

Dave began his employ with the City of Macedonia in 2008 and became a full-time employee in 2009. He started teaching in 1988 while working as a part-time firefighter in 1997. Dave was a teacher in the Nordonia Hills school district for ten years. Dave enjoys working in the City. He is the Fire Department's grant writer and is hopeful to possibly obtain some grant money this year.

Dave holds a BA and Masters in music; fire certifications, Professional Firefighter/ Paramedic, ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) CPR card; PALS card (Pediatric Advance Life Support) and holds Instructor and Officer certification. He is looking forward to possibly continuing his education as a Fire and EMS instructor.

Dave has a 16 year old son, a step-daughter age 24 and also has a 1 1/2 year old granddaughter. He is very much looking forward to Christmas shopping this year for his grand-daughter!!

Dave is living his life-long dream as a firefighter. He was born and raised in Akron. As a young boy, his house was located right across from a Fire Station and his interest of becoming a fireman peaked at that point. Although Dave does not teach anymore, he is still involved in music as the music coordinator for a church in Akron. He also sings for the community.

While off-duty, Dave enjoys riding his Harley; plays the piano, enjoys traveling and reading. One of his goals is to do cross-country riding.

We thank Dave for sharing his story with us and we appreciate his commitment to serving our community.

Monthly UpdateDiana Augustine, Executive Secretary

Congratulations to the Business of the Month…

9100 Valley View Rd. Unit A, Macedonia, Ohio 44056 330-998-3111On a personal level:Thank you for selecting us as your business of the month. Please allow us to tell you more about ourselves: We are transforming lives from the inside out. We are building a sense of community. We have created a family environment. We have empowered men and women and it has spilled over into their daily lives in a physical, emotional and spiritual way. Our members aren’t just losing inches and pounds, they are having their lives transformed. They are athletes and humanitarians. As are we. In the last few years, we have raised money for several causes. Our main cause is the Battered Women's Shelter. We raised over $12,000 for BWS in September of 2013 alone. We are going to be doing a Silent Auction Charity event for them and the Emergency Services of Northfield in April. We aren't trying to show off but at the same time we feel like we are doing so much to help our community and our county and the Country (some of our charity fund raisers have involved workouts: you pay to work out and the money goes to the children and families of fallen soldiers for educational scholarships, etc...) and we want you to know. Well, we certainly have found our niche. Mark and I have always wanted to make a difference in this world...as corny as that sounds. It is an honor and a humbling experience helping others transform their lives. Whether it is losing weight, getting physically fit or getting involved in one of our charity events to help others, our members are having their lives changed and so are the lives of those around us. We are trying our best to be our best. Thanks again to everyone who has contributed to making us the amazing place we are! Sincerely, Mark and Eleni

What’s with the name?ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ CROSSFIT is an affiliate that was founded on the principles that we consider very important: First, much thought was put into the name for the affiliate (pronounced Mo‘lon La’ve). The name means “Come and take them” because it was a defiant statement made by King Leonidas of Sparta Greece in the face of the Persian army’s demand for a surrender of weapons prior to the Battle of Thermopylae. King Leonidas showed courage and strength and he did not give up in the face of his enemy albeit the enemy was powerful and Leonidas was outnumbered. ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ reminds me that we are never to give up in the face of great discour-agement or negativity but we should rise up and boldly make our statement! At ΜΟΛΩΝ ΛΑΒΕ CROSSFIT we want to take the ordinary and transform it into the extraordinary. We want each individual to make their defiant statement-a bold declaration in the face of the enemy. Whether your goal or defiant statement is to get healthier in general or to achieve weight loss; become more self-confident; to train for a marathon; compete in a Tough Mudder or a Spartan Race; or to become a military elite operator. Or if you want to excel and do your personal best as a High school Track and Field athlete; Football player; Gymnast or you just want to become the toughest soccer mom on the block, we will give the encouragement and tools so you can achieve and you will see your fitness dreams become a reality. Furthermore, we are part of the CrossFit global community. A community that will welcome you no matter where your travels take you! CrossFit Boxes not only care about their athletes, but they care about their communities and how they can make positive changes in them.

Member testimonials:“My name is Heather and I joined Molon Labe CrossFit 8 months ago. Since then I have lost over 30 pounds and lots of inches! I am down several dress sizes! I am 47 years old and a mother of 2 children – 8 and 11 years old and a wonderful supportive husband. I have NEVER been athletic – never played any sports in school except for a backyard kickball game. I had always been lucky enough to be skinny without any physical effort, but as the years passed, pounds were adding up! Last summer, I used to walk around my neighborhood and would see people working out in a garage – they would drop everything and run down the street and I wondered, “What is going on?” Then in January I received a postcard from Molon Labe Crossfit. I thought it may be the group that was

working out in the garage so finally in March (3 months later) I called on the postcard and was correct. I was finally at a point in my life where my children were independent and I was able to make time available to take care of me. I called Mark Nolan and set up a time to learn about Molon Labe CrossFit. Mark and his wife, Eleni, are such wonderful Christian people. I think I may have been intimidated to even consider trying CrossFit due to my non-athletic background if it wasn’t for Mark. He was so positive and encouraging, and gave me the opportunity to get my life back in shape! CrossFit is such a non-traditional “gym” workout. I feel like I am part of a family. It is like having a personal trainer every day and every day is a different workout/challenge. Since I had no clue on how to “work out”, having someone with a daily plan, helping and telling me what to do was exactly what I needed. I WOD (CrossFit lingo for “work out”) now 4 times a week and eat a healthy diet. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------I am a busy 32 year old mother of three, however I made time to try CrossFit. It was one of the best decisions I have ever made! I understand it when people say that CrossFit can become addicting! It is a completely different atmosphere than going to a gym. You work together in your group, and you feel like you are part of a team. The camaraderie, the cheering each other on, the want for your other Cross fitters to succeed, and pushing each other's limits. That is one of my favorite parts of it. The relationships that you build with fellow Cross fitters is reminiscent of a family bond. Within two weeks I felt stronger, happier, and more confident in myself. In two months, I had lost 11 pounds and begin to see a change in my body. I go at least 3 to 4 times a week, and I make sure that I make the time for myself. If you want to Do something good for yourself, feel better physically and mentally, and want a team like atmosphere - then CrossFit is for you.

Molôn Labe Is my family outside of my blood family. The people are fantastic, especially the owners, Mark and Eleni. The facility is very nice and clean! It definitely feels like home. They have very affordable rates, a very flexible schedule, and Mark and Jason are amazing coaches.

Come join us!-Santina---------------------------------------------------------------------------------I am a married, 46 yr young, father of 2 and grandfather of 2. I started my CrossFit journey, after my 46th birthday, in Jan 2013. I was unhealthy, overweight and just wanted a change. My former USAF comrade, Mark Nolan, owner/coach of Molon Labe CrossFit, introduced me to Crossfit and I was immediately hooked. We started in his garage, and I would make the trip, 20 min. one way, 4 days a week, to get in a WOD(workout of the day). Over the course of time, I noticed a change in my body and my overall health. Currently, 9 months later, I have lost approx. 4 in. around my waistline, hallelujah, and 25 pounds! I haven’t felt this good since my days as an Air Force Peacekeeper, 23 yrs ago. Please take the time for yourself and make a change. Walk through those doors, that’s the hardest part, now in a spacious building, of Molon Labe Crossfit, and you will never look back. Also, thank you to all the athletes that have pushed me to get that last rep in, especially the garage folks, you know who you are.Forever grateful,-Dave “Pick”

From the Desk of Chief Tim BlackThe Macedonia Fire Departments Annual Santa Gift program was a great success! Santa delivered a record amount of gifts to good boys and girls throughout the city! Special thanks to the Firefighter elves who work hard

to make this program possible. During these Santa trips we discovered many houses that do not have visible numbers on their houses or mailboxes. PLEASE make sure you have a clearly visible house number on your house AND mailbox. Help us get to you fast. Have a safe and Happy New Year all!

MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF!

During times of heavy snow please do not cover up our fire hydrants. Keeping all snow away from around the fire hydrants is very important. It allows us to quickly find and attach our hoses to if there is a fire. If you are unable to dig out a hydrant please call our station at 330-468-8339 and we will come dig it out for you!

VOLUMES

Over the years our call numbers have steadily risen. This year we are poised to break the all time call volume record! I thought everyone would like to see the calls over time so here they are!

A PREVENTION GUIDE TO PROMOTE YOUR PERSONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY...

Cool Tip...Taking preventive action is your best defense against having to deal with extreme cold-weather conditions. By preparing your home and car in advance for winter emergencies, and by observing safety precautions during times of extremely cold weather, you can reduce the risk of weather-related health problems.

FrostbiteFrostbite is an injury to the body that is caused by freezing. Frost-bite causes a loss of feeling and color in affected areas. It most often affects the nose, ears, cheeks, chin, fingers, or toes. Frostbite can permanently damage the body, and severe cases can lead to amputation. The risk of frostbite is increased in people with reduced blood circulation and among people who are not dressed properly for extremely cold temperatures.

Recognizing FrostbiteAt the first signs of redness or pain in any skin area, get out of the cold or protect any exposed skin...frostbite may beginning. Any of the following signs may indicate frostbite:• a white or grayish-yellow skin area• skin that feels unusually firm or waxy• numbnessA victim is often unaware of frostbite until someone else points it out because the frozen tissues are numb.

What to DoIf you detect symptoms of frostbite, seek medical care. Because frostbite and hypothermia both result from exposure, first determine whether the victim also shows signs of hypothermia, as described previously. Hypo-thermia is a more serious medical condition and requires emergency medical assistance. If (1) there is frostbite but no sign of hypothermia and (2) immediate medical care is not available, proceed as follows:• Get into warm room as soon as possible.• Unless absolutely necessary, do not walk on frostbitten feet or toes---this increases the damage.• Immerse the affected are in warm-not-hot-water (the temperature should be comfortable to the touch for unaffected parts of the body).• Or, warm the affected area using body heat. For example, the heat of an armpit can be used to warm frostbitten fingers.• Do not rub the frostbitten area with snow or massage it at all. This can cause more damage.• Don't use a heating pad, heat lamp, or the heat of a stove, fireplace, or radiator for warming, Affected areas are numb and can be easily burned.

CONSUMER RESOLUTIONS FOR 2014

With Christmas behind us, now everyone is looking forward to 2014. The Summit County Office of Consumer Affairs offers some New Year’s resolu-tions that will help consumers throughout the year in avoiding identity theft and scams while creating sound financial habits.

Consumer Resolutions for 2014:

• If you received any gift cards, certificates, social or group discount coupons over the holiday, set a date for dinner, movie or shopping with plans to use them. Check out expiration dates on the discount coupons.

• Shred documents that contain personal identifying information.

• Update firewalls and anti-virus software on your computer or if none, install them.

• Smartphone users log out of apps (banking, social networking), clear your browser history, password protect your home screen, update operating software, and NEVER share data over public Wi-Fi networks.

• Know what websites or apps your kids visit, set restrictions on permitting downloads or purchases, and talk about safety online.

• Use a credit card when shopping by phone, television or online, not a debit card so you can dispute the charge if there are problems within 60 days from receipt of the bill.

• Do not respond to emails, text messages, mail or phone calls claiming you won a prize, gift card, lottery, grant or other unexpected surprise. It is a scam! The scammers are relying on you to log in with your user name and password or click on the link provided in the unexpected email or text message. While con artists look for you to give out over the telephone your name, address, account numbers or press the number to opt out from future calls. Why? To collect your information to sell or use it.

• Read monthly statements on accounts and bills to ensure all charges are yours and no hidden fees appear. Dispute any errors immediately.

• Get your free credit reports once every 12 months from each of the three nationwide consumer credit reporting companies at www.annualcreditreport.com or 1-877-332-8228.

• Commit to making a monthly budget, saving more, spending less, and paying down debts.

• If something sounds or appears suspicious, contact us at the Summit County Office of Consumer Affairs at 330-643-2879 and will we research it for you.

SNOW DRIVING TIPS...

While you can’t always prevent a crash, here are a few simple tips to prepare yourself for a safe trip when you’re out in the snow and ice.

#1) Keep it clean. Get up early if you have to but clear off your car’s windows and headlights so you can, in the words of an ODOT, “see and be seen.”

#2) Take it slow. The Ohio Committee for Severe Weather Awareness says the first snowfall tends to catch drivers off-guard and their first mistake is they forget to take it slow and leave more room between vehicles.

#3) Don’t cruise. Turn off the cruise control because, ODOT says, sudden acceleration or movements could cause your car to slide.

#4) Be prepared. Make sure your tires have the proper amount of tread and keep them inflated. AAA says you should fill your windshield wiper reservoir with antifreeze fluid and keep an emergency kit in your car. (Read below for what your kit should have.)

#5) Give it a brake. Knowing how to best use your brakes can be a life saver. If you have an anti-lock brake system (ABS), you should “Stomp, stay and steer.” But the technique differs if you don’t have the ABS.

BONUS TIP: Give snowplows wide berth. While they’re trying to clear the roads, don't tailgate or try to pass.

AAA's Emergency Road Kit checklist:- ice scraper, cloth or roll of paper towels- battery starter cables- first-aid kit- non-perishable snacks and drinking water- blanket and gloves

- warning devices such as flares or triangles- window washing solvent- flashlight- traction mats- snow brush and shovel- small bag of abrasive material such as sand, salt or kitty litter for traction

awareness about dog registration and remind dog owners to purchase their 2014 dog

license before January 31, 2013.

The “Licensed Dog of the Day” campaign will feature one dog per day now through

January 31, 2013, which is the deadline to renew a dog license. Chosen dogs will

have their photograph featured on the Fiscal Office’s Facebook Fan Page at

www.facebook.com/SummitCountyFiscal. The status update will also include

biographical information about the pup, such as unique traits and personal stories.

Dogs featured as a “Licensed Dog of the Day” must possess a current Summit

County dog license. To enter, please send a photograph of your dog to

[email protected] and include their name, breed and a few fun facts

about them. Summit County residents are also encouraged to “like” the Fiscal Office

Facebook Fan Page to receive the “Licensed Dog of the Day” status updates.

2014 Summit County Dog Licenses are available for purchase beginning December 1,

2013 through January 31, 2014. The cost is $18 each. The State of Ohio is requiring

counties to offer three licensing options this year. The County of Summit will be

offering a three-year license for $54.00 and a permanent license for $180.00, in

addition to the one year license for $18.00.
