Available for Youth in Grades K-12 who reside in the City of College Park

SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION NOTE:Grade and high school youth who reside in the City of College Park are eligible to apply. Scholarships are granted up to a maximum of $400 per student. Students are eligible to receive a scholarship for one camp session only. Priority is given to youth who did not receive a City of College Park scholarship in previous years and youth applying to the summer reading program. This application is only for the scholarship and not camp registration. If your child receives a scholarship, the next step is then to apply to the camp. We will assist with that process.

Description: Cyber Defense Training Camp is a 7 day residential summer program for rising junior and senior high school students. SEAPERCH SUMMER CAMP 2018

Description: The SeaPerch Summer Camp will introduce rising 7th, 8th and 9th grade children to mechanical design, construction, problem solving, and teamwork skills using a SeaPerch, a submersible, remotely operated vehicle (ROV). Students build the ROV from a kit and follow a curriculum that teaches basic engineering and science concepts. Students learn about robotics, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Students are required to bring lunch. A snack will be provided. THE AMAZING SCIENCE DISCOVERY CAMP

Description: The Amazing Science Discovery Camp is a one week summer camp for students entering grades 3-5 with an interest in exploring the physical world. Each day of the camp is filled with exciting experiments, interesting lessons, educational demonstrations, and much more. JUMP START 2018

Description: The Jump Start Program will invite 50 rising high school juniors and seniors to participate in a week-long summer science immersion program at the University of Maryland. The program was developed through a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and is now sponsored by the College of Computer, Mathematical, and Natural Sciences, University of Maryland. Students considering a career in the sciences will have the opportunity to learn the tools of modern life sciences research and experience the excitement of discovery. In addition to carrying out laboratory investigations, students will participate in seminars and professional development workshops. The theme for the Summer 2018 Jump Start program is biomedical science. Students will learn how cellular and molecular techniques are changing the way we diagnose and treat disease. Target Group: High school students who will be entering their junior or senior year in the fall of 2018 (i.e., those who will graduate in 2019 or 2020)Dates:

S.P.I.C.E. CAMP

Description: S.P.I.C.E. (Students with Potential and Interest, Considering Engineering) Camp is a one-week commuter program for young women who will be entering the 9th and 10th grade next fall and would like to learn more about engineering. Students will be introduced to the world of engineering through projects, tours, and guest speakers. Each activity is intended to highlight the relevance of engineering in our daily life and how engineering can work to improve societal problems. SUMMER READING PROGRAM

Description: The Summer Reading Program is a program held at an elementary school near the University of Maryland’s College Park campus. It is designed for students who are experiencing difficulty with reading. During the program, teachers work in pairs with small groups of 6 - 10 children. They utilize a variety of educationally sound, research-based techniques to address individual reading needs. Emphasis is placed on helping children become more strategic readers. Areas of instruction include phonics, vocabulary, oral reading fluency, comprehension, spelling and word study, and writing. In addition, motivational concerns are addressed. INSECT SUMMER CAMP

Description: Through a variety of hands-on activities and interactive field trips, Bug Camp: Insects. Science & Society will teach kids how amazing and valuable bugs truly are. GYMKANA SUMMER CAMP

Description: Extends the philosophy of the University of Maryland Gymkana Troupe by providing an opportunity for boys and girls of all abilities to learn gymnastics, while promoting healthy, drug-free living. Our camp provides an environment for children to learn and participate in gymnastics without the pressure of competition.

Program #1: GymTots Coed ages 5, 6, & 7*; uses tumbling, selected apparatus, trampoline, and games to stress fundamental movements and body control. PHYSICS OF QUIDDITCH

Description: This innovative program combines physics, sport, and literature of the Harry Potter novels.Throughout the week spent immersed in fun and physical activities, participants gain skills in physics, critical thinking, teamwork, playing the sport of quidditch, and an appreciation for the literature that inspired the sport. Daily activities include: lab experiments in the context of the sport, introduction to applicable physics concepts in mechanics, drills that apply the concepts the sport, and quidditch scrimmages. Throughout the week of the camp, participants develop teams, sorted into two “houses,” in preparation for the final tournament. The tournament consists of a luncheon for participants and parents, student poster session and the championship game between the two houses.Target Group: Rising 6th - 9th gradersDates:

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. I have more than one child. Can each child be awarded a scholarship? Yes, please fill out a separate application per child.

2. My child is home-schooled, can I still apply? Yes, as long as the child is in grade K-12 and lives in the City of College Park.

3. Do I need to register with the UMD camp or will you? When you are contacted by the City of College Park that your child has received a scholarship, you will receive information about the next step of registering your child for the camp.

4. How will I be contacted that I have or have not received the scholarship? You will be contacted by email or U.S. mail with the addresses you provided on your application if your child has received a scholarship or not.

5. What if my child cannot make the camp we signed up for? If after registering your child is unable to attend the camp, you need to contact us at least 2 weeks in advance so another child may be able to use the funds towards his/her camp. If you do not notify us in advance, you will not be eligible for a scholarship for at least the next year.

6. Who can I contact with questions? Latisha Moore, Administrative Assistant with the City of College Park Youth, Family and Senior Services will be happy to answer any questions you may have. Her email address is [email protected]. Her office number is 240-487-3550 option 1.

7. Do you provide transportation to the camp? No, you are responsible for the transportation to and from the summer camp.

8. The camp my child wants to attend is more than $400, can I still apply? Yes. If a camp costs more than $400, you are responsible for paying the difference.

9. If the camp I choose is less than $400 can I put the remaining monies towards a second camp? No, only one scholarship per child is awarded up to $400.
