Independence Day Holiday Affects Street Sweeping and Trash Collection Due to the observance of Independence Day on Monday, July 4, trash collection and street sweeping will be on holiday schedule. Trash will not be collected on Monday, July 4. All residents should place trash for collec-tion on the day after their regular route day. For example, residents on Monday‘s route should place their trash for collection on Tuesday, Tuesday‘s route on Wednesday, and so on for the entire week. Friday‘s route will be collected on Saturday. The regular collection schedule resumes on Monday, July 11. There will be no street sweeping on Monday, July 4 through Friday, July 8. Due to the holiday trash collection

schedule, trash carts are at the curb one day later than usual, which conflicts with scheduled sweeping days

in many neighborhoods. Residents should place trash carts at the curb per the holiday schedule. Streets that

are not swept due to the holiday are not rescheduled. If you have questions about the holiday maintenance

schedule, please contact the Public Works Maintenance Division at 714-960-8861.

What a historic occasion! On Saturday evening, July 9, the City of Huntington Beach, together with residents

and supporters of the new Senior Center in Central Park will celebrate the GRAND OPENING with “The

GALA – Celebrating a Dream Come True.” The opening of this beautiful facility is a once in a lifetime event,

and Gala attendees will be invited for a sneak peek tour before the official ribbon cutting event at NOON on

Sunday, July 10. This new Senior Center will be instrumental in the development of new programs and

services dedicated to the aging population of Huntington Beach.

It is through the fierce dedication and perseverance of many of the city’s founders along with the Huntington

Beach Council on Aging that the idea of a Senior Center in Central Park has become a reality. The new build-

ing measures nearly 38,000 square feet and is dedicated to serving the growing number of older adults in

Huntington Beach. Featuring a state of the art design, the center boasts a large fitness and training center

designed for the active aging population along with a dance studio, classrooms, a computer center and

lounge. A beautiful community room featuring views of Central Park will play host to the GALA event, as well

as a variety of activities including the daily lunch program, senior dances, and special occasions of all

kinds. The GALA event is sold out….but we invite you to attend the official ribbon cutting at NOON on

Sunday, July 10. The new Senior Center in Central Park will be open for tours and volunteers will be

available to answer your questions until 3 p.m.

If you or your business would like to create a legacy for yourself, your family, or a loved one by becoming a

naming or visionary sponsor, donations are welcome. Donated funds will be used to enhance and develop

new programs and services dedicated to the aging population of Huntington Beach. For information on the

GALA, Ribbon Cutting, or how to become a visionary sponsor, contact Randy Pesqueira at

Get Property Tax Relief Using the Mills Act!

"The California bungalow could well be the most beloved house form in Southern California to-day...bungalows were designed a hundred years ago as active contributors to the character of some of America's greatest neighborhoods." A significant part of the quality of life of residential districts in Huntington Beach's historic downtown is the collection of eclectic beach cottages and bunga-lows on Main Street and the surrounding

streets. Even our downtown police substation is in a historic bungalow. See if your property qualifies for the Mills Act Program and save money on your property taxes. The purpose of The Mills Act is to encourage the preservation and restoration of historic properties through-out the City by offering financial incentives to property owners who restore and maintain historic commercial and residential properties. Inquire and apply today and help protect and preserve the character of Surf City. TEAM RED WHITE AND BLUE On June 18, a group from HBFD participated in the Team Red White and Blue event in Santa Monica. This organization puts on surf camps for wounded veterans to experience the thrill of surfing. The HBFA team part-nered with a Navy and Army Reserve veteran who suffers from a traumatic brain injury. On a normal day Cindy strug-gles just to walk, however, for the first time, she was able to stand up and surf a few waves. It was an incredible sight to see the non-stop ear to ear smile she displayed, even when she got pitched over. All the participants were so apprecia-tive of the volunteers out there helping them have a great time. Special thank you to the surf coaches who volunteered their time and represented Team HBFD! Eric McCoy (Team Captain) Kane Johnson Tim Andre Ian Zakrzewski Zak Wright The next event will be in our home town of HB and the HBFA is hoping to get a big turnout of surf coaches. The more surf coaches we have, the more veterans get invited out to the Surf Camp.

Resident Thanks HBFD One morning in May, a resident’s heart stopped beating while he was at home with his family. A 911 call was made, and a dis-patcher at Metro Net Fire Dispatch gave the patient’s 17 year old son step by step in-structions in CPR while the paramedics were en route to the home. Once Fire Per-sonnel arrived at the house, they continued CPR while delivering advanced life saving measures to the patient. He responded fa-vorably to the treatment and arrived at the hospital breathing on his own and with a heartbeat. After spending nine days in the hospital, he was able to go home and be with his family once again. Today, looking much different than when he first met the fire crew, the patient stopped by the Edwards Fire Station with his wife, mother, and one of his four children to say thank you to the Firefighter/Paramedics who helped save his life. The paramedics were quick to point out that his outcome may have been much different had his young son not been so quick to administer CPR.
