• Ohio was a free state making it an important part of the Underground Railroad

• Ohio had the Ohio River as it’s natural border separating it from the Southern states that were not free (runaway slaves used this as a guide to know that freedom was on the other side).

• Why did the Southern states sign the Northwest Ordinance in agreement that the new states of the north would forbid slavery?

• The South was ok with the North not having slaves because without slaves they wouldn’t be able to have large tobacco plantations and compete with the South

• Any runaway slaves had to be returned to their owners so the South was not in danger of losing their slaves to a free state such as Ohio
