MORE AND MORE the season of1976 parallels the calamitous De-pression season of 1938 when.shows folded or closed early» andthose shows remaining on the roaddid spotty business. The majorityof tenters this year have hadsee-saw business at best - oneday, good; one day, mediocre; orspurts of great attendance followed by dryspells.

It's been rumored that aSummit Meeting by CorporationPowers was held recently in theeast and that tieatty-Cole may nottour in '77. Add to this the pos-sibility that King Bros, may beenlarged and a cat act added. Bemindful, however, that each yearwe are deluged with rumors con-cerning the fate of the EmpressCircus Beatty-Cole, and that eachyear the show goes out as usual.Only time will tell whether thesestories have any validity or not.

Meanwhile - The Gossip GoesOn: Aerial star JACQUELINE ZERBI-NI is off to Europe for a 3 weeksvacation in November, to visither family. Daughter Patricia isbreaking a Lipizzan horse andyounger daughter Sylvia is goingto school in France. Tarzan andJackie return to Castle next sea-son where Jackie will do hersingle trapeze feature, not theairplane act.

The St. Bernard dog, Gypsy, owned by the ROBERTSONS (now ontour with Garden Bros.) died ofcancer...Aerialist ROGER DuBOIS

fell at a Fair early in the yearand landed, fortunately, in theawning of a concession tentMARIE FRANCE is the only gal Iknow who can carry her entire dogact in her lap! The five "Yorkies"are adorable in the ring. Onelooks exactly like a mop with eye*

FLASH!! KARL WALLENDA will"recreate the world famous 7 peoplepyramid for a BBC-TV feature tobe released to theatres followingits British telecast. Karl wasthe guest at a Clambake at JOEUZDAVINIS' Enchanted Forest inOld Forge (NY). Joe's wife, MARYEDNA, well known to circus folks, died this past June in an autoaccident. GUNTHER WALLENDA's wifeSheila, is the sister of the lateMrs. Uzdavinis.

Concert bandmaster RICHARDWITMARSH presented "disc-mistress"MARLENE GROTEFENT with Volume 2of his "Sounds of the Circus".The album is available from:South Shore Concert Band, Box 357Bridgewater, Mass 62333.

That "Wild One" PETEY KIN-OSH left the concession dept. ofRBBB trekked off to Sofia and Bu-charest for 10 days, and is nowwith the concession dept. of theFreedom train. Joining him therewere PHIL MIRANDA and LARRY VOLTZ.....Trapeze star ROSE BEEHEE iswardrobe mistress at the Metropol-itan Opera in New York, where shehas been for the past 12 years.

Show Closed? Two days after the Willo-

wick (Ohio) engagement (Sept. 12-13), Sid Kellner made a snap de-cision to close the George-Matt-hews Circus. The plan to enterCalifornia at Sacramento on Oct.21st, stopping enroute to playthree major cities was abandoned.

The circus equipment ispresently stored at the AscotSpeedway in Akron, where the showwas in its second day of a tenday layover, reportedly to repairtrucks and canvas.

Performers and personnellaying over with the circus wereleft suddenly to fend for them-selves. Some, including the LosLatinos and Wat-Tims, joinedCharles Germaine's new show whichopened at Hartford. Others, suchas Alphonso Magana and LuAnn Ja-cobs, with the G-M elephants, be-gan looking for work. Staff mem-bers and personnel scattered. EdRussell and veteran clown HarryRoss were returning to California

Sid Kellner flew to Calif-ornia where it is rumored he willplay some indoor and ball parkdates starting in November. He

G-M NotesThe unpredictable lake wea-

ther around Cleveland was up to'its usual.pranks on Sep. 9th,when a sub-seasonal cold snap, with rain, gusting winds and tor-nado sightings zeroed in on theFairview Park area where theGeorge-Matthews Circus was appearing. Only the masterful handlingof the big top prevented its be-ing lost to dangerous winds dur-ing the show's teardown and sub-sequent set-up at the Cloverleaf •Speedway on Sep. 10th.

Eric Jaeger and the G-M bigtop crew labored around the clockwhen the show over-nighted from

e Speedway to Shoregate Shop-pi ig Center in Willowick, wherethree shows were scheduled..

Problems with the stakedriver prevented the first stakefrom being driven until 4 a.m.,wh-oh aroused the sleeping resi-

.itial area around the center, and soon police arrived

Dave LeBlanc, in an effortto muffle the sound, tried put-ting a rag between the pile dri-ver and the stake and trapped hisfinger. Only a piece of skin heldthe tip of his first finger onthe right hand. He was rushed toEmergency by Ed Russell, wherethe finger was sewn together anda splint put on the broken bone.

Continued harrassment bythe police stopped all driving ofthe stakes until 8 a.m., but theshow made its opening matinee -just an hour late.

When the circus played inTracy (Minn) last month the Hu-mane Society reportedly found all35 show animals were in "badshape" (elephants, lions, tigersetc.). At that time County author-ities threatened to issue arrestwarrants against the circus.

Society officials werewaiting for the circus at Wadena(Minn.) when the show was sched-uled to appear there. However, the circus failed to show up.

BRENDA CUTTIN

Our family h smaller today. Our hearts have shri-veled with shock. Our tears have fallen uselessly. Our fears have been named. We ask ourselves, "Why?" and our thoughts echoacross an empty arena. No reply

Did she live so the arena would be filled with pay-ing customers? Yes, but . . .No1 All the peanuts fromall the seats from all the performances from 'all theseasons could not justify the lessening of her life byone day.

Did she live so that people could be excited and en'•tinned? Yes, but....No! Her life meant more thanthe surface and temporary thrills the audience ex-perienced.Did she live to display her skills? Yes, but...No! Herlife meant more than making cir das around a wire. Why?I think back over th« 'ears. I think of openings, and

and finales; good towns and bad towns; easyrum, and long runs; sleep, and no sleep. I re-member weightless ecstacy, and I remember deepdepression. But through all these times, I remember being apart of "us".When I was down, there was always one of youto pick me up. When we shared good times, know-ing it was good times for all of us made it all thebetter. Without even knowing it, we have heldeach other up - and continued.I begin to sense it now, though I'll never know"why?" Brenda has showed me how much we allmean to each other. We are not robots, blindlyperforming functions, to be able to buy productsmade by other blindly performing robots. We are a family! And when one of our membersis no longer with us, we grieve as a family.

So when we think of Brenda, let us think of howmuch we all belong to each other. It is in this spirit that Brenda lived.

And it is in this spirit that we mourn her death!Anonymous

No people are more senti-mental about animals than arecircus folks. The following vign-ette illustrates that truth. Apuppy, given to Arnie Jeffers byEvy Karoly was struck by a car.The dog languished in shock forseveral days but finally recover*

ed. A month later, as the dog wasgrowing stronger, it somehow be-came entangled with its chain a-round the muffler of the Jeffers1

motorhome and then proceeded topad into a puddle of water whichcovered a bared bit of electricca e* Vilma and Antonio Lorenzoheard the dog scream as it wasbeing electrocuted, ran out andfreed the animal which was al-ready stiffening, its eyes glazedFrantically, the couple gave thedog mouth-to-mouth, began to mas-sage its tiny body. They werejoined in their efforts by MarieFrance and Bonnie Earl and, asArnie raced the dog to the Vet,with Marie continuing artificialrespiration, the animal began todisplay spasmodic flickers of vi-tal signs.

Today, thanks to that de-dicated group of animal-lovers,the dog is alive and well.

See you down the road, luvs.
