My, My, My, ZADOk?
In 2011 John Rutter was commissioned to write the celebratory anthem ‘This Is The day’ for the wedding of HRH prince William of Wales with Catherine Middleton at Westminster abbey.
About Gary…I have been singing for as long as I can remember. Wolverhampton Grammar School was my major musical influence – School Choir, Choral Society, Musical Theatre Group, Jazz Band – alongside the Youth Orchestra and the Concert Band.
When it came to university it had to be music, and so to York. Three wonderful years of music making also included being Chorus Master for York light Opera and Md for pickering Musical Society.
I then became a tenor in the Choir of York Minster with all that entails; daily services as well as many world tours, concerts and recordings. after 18 years , I left and became part of the creative team behind the formation of Singlive.
now, with Inspiration as my sole focus, I really do have my dream job. Weekly rehearsals and trips around the country and abroad are a joy.
Who else but Inspiration could programme Tom Jones with Handel; ‘delilah’ with ‘Zadok The priest’? This concert has been put together to show that really we can sing anything. Those of you who are regular members of the audience will know this already, but sometimes it’s good to put it all in one show. The singers and orchestra members are so flexible and talented that they throw themselves into whatever we put before them.
I am still out of action I’m afraid after having had eye surgery but I’ve been keeping in close contact with the singers and of course Mark and andy who have taken over for me as Music directors in newcastle and leeds respectively. Huge thanks to them of course. Some of this music has been its usual challenge. I suppose German is quite straightforward after the Finnish or Swahili we have done in the past but still, it does need to be memorised, which is hard, especially if you don’t know the language.
You’ll see this concert is definitely one of two halves, with the first half leaning more towards the classical and the second more towards pop, but they do all have a Royal connection, more about that later in the concert.
From the Coronation to the party In The park, I hope you enjoy the show.
Gary Griffiths, Inspiration Music Director and Founder
The Orchestra of Opera north, Classic FM’s Orchestra in Yorkshire, is the only ensemble in the country to have a year-round dual role in the opera house and concert hall.
It has important relationships with leeds International Concert Season and the region’s choral societies, and is the resident Orchestra for the leeds Conductors Competition, the national new Composers Forum and the orchestral concert seasons in kirklees.
The Orchestra has a strong commitment to education work and many of the players are outstanding teachers with several holding professorships at the Royal northern College of Music and at universities within the region.
It has received international recognition for its recordings, with releases on Chandos, Collins Classics, deutsche Grammophon, EMI, Hyperion and naxos, and has toured abroad both with the whole Company and independently to many European countries and regularly performs at venues throughout the uk.
THE ORCHESTRA OF OPERA NORTH
The lyrics for ‘Ode To Joy’ are based on an ode written in the summer of 1785 by German playwright, poet and historian, Friedrich Schiller. It is described as an enthusiastic celebration of the unity of all mankind.

Madness performed ‘Our House’ on the roof of Buckingham palace at the Queen’s diamond Jubilee Concert in 2012. during the performance the palace was transformed into terraced housing with an amazing light show.
How long have you been singing and what got you started?
I sang with my school choir, in folk clubs and to my children and grandchildren. When I retired I looked for a group hobby and I signed up for ‘Sing The Shows’ with Horsforth Music Centre. I got the singing bug and looked for a choir where I didn’t have to audition.
What made you join Inspiration?
I found Inspiration online. I liked their website – lots of information and photos of happy people so I applied.
Do you sing with any other choirs?
Inspiration has a smaller sister choir called Echo which sings songs in the jazz style. My daughter and I love their concerts at The Venue. She joined Echo last summer and encouraged me to join her. It’s a new challenge and we work hard but it’s lots of fun.
What kind of music do you most enjoy singing?
I have loved musicals all my life but really love the variety of songs and singing styles we get to perform.
How does singing make you feel?
Singing lifts my spirits and I feel a happier person. I like the concentration, the word learning, I stand taller and fill my lungs. It’s a proper workout for the body and mind! Singing with an orchestra or in a venue with good acoustics is a wonderful feeling too.
If you could sing anywhere in the world where would it be?
I think that would have to be The Royal albert Hall. York Minster would be high on the list too.
What are your highlights since joining Inspiration?
There have been many including our 2012 trip to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and all the friends I’ve made. My favourite highlight was last year’s trip to new York culminating in our performance of ‘The lion king Medley’ at Carnegie Hall.
What would you say to anyone unsure about trying singing as a hobby?
Just give it a try. I wish I’d found Inspiration years ago. I was hesitant and thought I might not be good enough but my fears soon disappeared. Inspiration is our ‘singing family’ because it’s a friendly, supportive group of people who have a common purpose – to make beautiful music and please our Md, friends and family.
Lesley lives in Ireland Wood, North Leeds. She is 68 and a retired data manager for a regional Cancer registry and former therapy radiographer.
She has been a member of Inspiration since March 2011.

Coldplay’s ‘Viva la Vida’ meaning ‘long live life’ won a Grammy award for best song in 2009. The song’s title is taken from a painting by 20th century Mexican artist Frida kahlo.
SINger SPotlIght RuTH AND PETER kERR
Peter and Ruth are 63 and 61 respectively. both now retired, they moved to yorkshire from Hertfordshire where Peter was a town planner and Ruth was a teacher of German, French and Special Needs.
They have been members of Inspiration since January 2014.
How long have you both been singing and what got you started?
We both sang at college and then we actually met at the Saffron Walden Choral Society in 1977!
What made you decide to join Inspiration and do you sing with any other groups?
We sing at church when we get the opportunity and we were encouraged to join Inspiration by church friends because they knew we would like the range of music and the excitement of singing in a big and friendly choir.
What’s your favourite highlight since joining Inspiration?
Simply the ‘buzz’ of singing in leeds Town Hall with the fabulous Orchestra for Opera north.
If you could sing anywhere in the world where would it be?
We enjoyed singing Elgar’s ‘dream of Gerontius’ in the Royal albert Hall with the ‘The Very Big Chorus’ under Brian kay of the kings Singers. We would love to sing there again sometime!
What kind of music do you most enjoy singing?
We really enjoy singing the larger choral works. Handel’s Messiah is a particular favourite of us both. We recently took part in a version ‘from scratch’ in Ripon Cathedral which was a fabulous experience.
What would you say to any couples who might be thinking of joining Inspiration together?
We would highly recommend it to everyone! It’s wonderful practising together at home and then singing altogether both in rehearsals and concerts.
‘The Holy City’ is a religious Victorian ballad dating from 1892. The melody formed the basis of a spiritual titled ‘Hosanna’, which in turn was the basis for the opening of duke Ellington’s ‘Black and Tan Fantasy’. To find out more about joining Inspiration or Echo
please visit www.inspirationuk.com.
‘Zadok The priest’ was composed by Handel for king George II’s coronation in 1727 and together with ‘The king Shall Rejoice’, ‘My Heart Is Inditing’ and ‘let Thy Hand Be Strengthened’ form the Coronation anthems.
The 1968 Ivor novello award-winning song ‘delilah’ was performed by Tom Jones at the Queen’s diamond Jubilee Concert in 2012. It narrates the story of a betrayed lover who begs for forgiveness after committing murder.

Where did you study?
I started my musical training at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester. I then went on to the Royal College of Music in london.
What inspired you to become a musician?
My father’s piano playing and hearing many great violin players when I was young.
How did you come into your current position within the orchestra?
I spent a year freelancing in london with The Royal Ballet and philharmonia orchestras. I then attended two gruelling auditions for The Orchestra of Opera north and was accepted in early 1978.
What have been your highlights since playing with The Orchestra of Opera North?
There have been many highlights over the years, most notably performing the Elgar and Britten concertos. Our performances of the Mahler Symphonies, Mozart operas and, of course, Wagner’s Ring Cycle are also some of my favourites.
Which piece of music would you love to perform that you haven’t already?
I would really like to perform Strauss’ alpine Symphony.
If you could perform anywhere in the world where would it be?
There are two venues that I would like to perform in – the beautiful Musikverein in Vienna and also the magnificent Suntory Hall in Tokyo.
Why do you love playing for the Inspiration concerts?
The energy and enthusiasm in the choir is exceptional and really rather rare.
David is Leader of The Orchestra of Opera North. He is one of the orchestra’s longest serving members having joined 36 years ago.

Inspiration is proud to announce the birth of a brand new member of our family of choirs – Inspiration Southampton – who will be performing with yet another world class orchestra.
We are proud to be already working with some of the best musicians in the uk; The Orchestra of Opera north and Royal northern Sinfonia. From this summer we will also be working with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra when Inspiration Southampton perform their first concert at the O2 Guildhall Southampton on 19 July.
To launch the new choir we are holding a singing workshop at the O2 Guildhall Southampton on 3 May when 200 singers from leeds and newcastle will come together with new singers from the south coast. The day will end with a short performance of the pieces learned during the workshop so it promises to be an exciting day full of singing!
For more information about attending the workshop or joining Inspiration Southampton please visit www.inspirationuk.com or www.bsolive.com.
