Sarnia-Lambton Business Development Corporation (SLBDC) is a non-profit,community-based corporation funded by the Federal Government through IndustryCanada's Community Futures Program.

Our mandate includes Community Economic Development (CED) and helping smallbusinesses in Lambton County to be more successful, thereby creating permanent jobsand wealth in our community. Assistance is available to both existing business ownersand those people who are considering starting a new business.

The SLBDC is governed by a volunteer Board of highly skil led professionals from the localcommunity and is staffed by personnel who are dedicated to helping the community andsmall business grow and Prosper.

WE PROVIDE:

Financing: Loans to a maximum of $150,000 at a rate of prime plus 2 to 4% are availableto businesses that are unable to obtain any or all of the financing they require atreasonable terms from traditional lenders. Monthly repayment terms are negotiated in thebusiness' best interest and partial or full repayment can be made at any time withoutpenalty.

Consulting: Counsell ing services cover all areas of business management, ranging fromgeneral business start-up information to specific questions about marketing, employeeir"n"g"rn"nt, bookkeeping and taxation. SLBDC provides assistance with the preparationof detiiled business plans and financial projections. Information on government servicesand programs is also available. A business resource library and a computer lab are opento the public during business hours.

YOU PROVIDE:

A plan: All loan applicants require a business plan that describes the business, l istsobjectives, analyses the market, details the marketing strategy and includes a financialplan together with any other relevant information.

Experience: Clients should have the experience and skil ls necessary to succeed in thebusiness venture.

Commitment: Clients must demonstrate a serious commitment to making the business asuccess and plan to invest some of their own money. Security of business and/or personalassets wil l be required as collateral for loans.

Character: Most importantly, clients must demonstrate a history of honesty and integrityin their dealings with creditors and other business contacts.

INTRODUCTIONA Business Plan is a comprehensive document that outl ines all aspects of aproposed/existing business. How much detail and depth you must develop in yourBusiness Plan wil l depend on the size and scope of the venture. However, it mustalways summarize the business' potential, outl ine the Marketing Plan, forecast itsfinancial future and state the funding required.

A Business Plan is an invaluable tool for managing a successful business. The Planserves three main functions:

. Determines the viabil ity of your business idea

. Organizes your planning

. Helps to obtain financing

Usually, a Business Plan is written in the third person. Use phrases such as "theProprietor" or "the Owner" and avoid saying "1", "me", "my", "v1/e", "us" or "our".

Market Research:

Market Survey:

Now that you have identif ied your target market (potential customers), you want to knowwhat they think about your product or service. Create a market survey, then go out andquestion people who could be your potential customers. Keep the questionnaire brief -only 8 to 12 questions. Use a variety of questioning techniques, keeping questions fairand free of bias. Ask if the person would use your product or service, how often theywould use it and what they would pay for it. Include other questions that wil l help youdetermine how best to reach and serve your customers/clients. Be sure to survey arepresentative sample of your target market.

Compile your survey results, tabulating the numbers for each response.

Using the survey results, prove that a market exists for your product or service. Thenproject your sales figures for the first year of operation.
