Course Description

Diversity in the workplace can place significant challenges on staff interaction that requires

skill and discernment to manage. This course provides students with a holistic grounding in

intercultural awareness to engage with self, others and ever-changing contexts with intelligence,

compassion and humility. Upon completion of this course students will be familiar with diversity as

it relates to learning styles, time, ethnicity, race, gender, age, gender and values, and how these

relate to intercultural cooperation and business.

Learning Objectives

This is a highly practical course that will allow you to explore, engage and challenge complex

diversity issues and how they are managed within an organizational environment. By participating

in this course, you will:

• Gain a deeper understanding into the concept of diversity and the challenges associated with

managing diversity in a business context, globally and locally.

• Analyse and debate current diversity trends, theories and the impact these have on

managing workforce diversity and organizational growth.

• Assess diversity strategies and whether they meet organizational values, attitudes, goals and

encourage an inclusive learning environment.

• Understand factors that lead to diversity strategies’ success or shortfalls.

• Evaluate diversity policies and processes, and challenge preconceived ideas.

• Acquire interpersonal skills to effectively communicate across cultures in organizations and

build a business environment based on trust.

• Walk away with the skills and competencies to handle challenging situations in relation to

managing workforce diversity.

• Understand the importance of diversity management in a South African context.

Course Prerequisites

None.

Methods of Instruction

This course takes a highly practical approach to managing diversity and preparation is key

as in-class discussions will deal with the complexities and realities of managing diversity in a

business environment. Learning will involve in-class exercises, active reflection, discussion,

readings, short lectures, videos, on-site visit and guest speakers that help you engage and

reflect on diversity issues in a local business context.

Course Requirements

Reflection Paper

You will be asked to write a paper reflecting on your observations during your site-visit. You paper

should reflect on:

1. the stage of diversity of the organization

2. how the company's structure and culture has influenced diversity within the organization

3. how the values and attitudes of the rainbow nation are reflected in the organizational culture

4. how diversity is managed and maintained across the business.

The paper should be typed, double-spaced, and 1500 words. These papers should be reflective,

yet include a critical analysis of your personal observations and include references.

Case Study Paper

You will be asked to write a paper on the case study: “Workplace Conflict in South Africa - A case

of Western Culture vs African Culture”.

● Read the Case study: Reflect on how this situation could have been preempted.

● Suggest HRM practices and strategies to ensure such a situation would not arise again.

● Discuss the best way to manage such a situation.

The paper should be typed, double-spaced, and 1500 words. These paper should be

Diversity Program & Policies

In small groups you will be given a brief on an organization and asked to work in groups to create

a diversity program and accompanying policies.

● Use the 2015/2016 South African Index report to guide you on current trends.

● You may either create your own diversity programs and policy or modify templates.

● You must discuss at least 3 areas of diversity.

You will be asked to submit this as a report and must clearly identify the diversity gaps within the

organization. Furthermore, you must reflect on how you will manage these changes and how they

will be communicated. Communication is vital in successfully implementing a diversity policies

and programs.

Final Exam

In your final exam you will be provided with a short case study and asked to write a reflective

essay. This exam will test how you manage a complex situation with intelligence, compassion

and humility.

Topics to be assigned in class with time for preparation. Students will be graded on critical

analysis of topic, participation, and ability to respond to rebuttals.

The final paper is 1750 words long. This paper must be an in-depth analysis of one of the topics

discussed in class, and include and discuss at least 5 scholarly sources. The paper will be graded

according to the ability of the student to develop a coherent and critical argument addressing the

essay question, whilst demonstrating comprehensive understanding of the readings from the

course.

Participation

Attendance Policy

Regular class attendance is required throughout the program, and all unexcused absences will

result in a lower participation grade for any affected CIEE course. Due to the intensive schedules

for Open Campus and Short Term programs, unexcused absences that constitute more than 10%

of the total course will result in a written warning.

Students who transfer from one CIEE class to another during the add/drop period will not be

considered absent from the first session(s) of their new class, provided they were marked present

for the first session(s) of their original class. Otherwise, the absence(s) from the original class

carry over to the new class and count against the grade in that class.

For CIEE classes, excessively tardy (over 15 minutes late) students must be marked absent.

Attendance policies also apply to any required co-curricular class excursion or event, as well as

to Internship, Service Learning, or required field placement. Students who miss class for personal

travel, including unforeseen delays that arise as a result of personal travel, will be marked as

absent and unexcused. No make-up or re-sit opportunity will be provided.

given the exposure to the South African Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment Act

(BBBEE or B-BBEE) and its effects within a diversity management context.
