Professor of Exercise Physiology

The new Department of Health Sciences and Technology

at ETH Zurich (www.hest.ethz.ch) invites applications for

a Professorship in Exercise Physiology. Exercise physiol-

ogy studies acute responses and chronic adaptations of

the organism to physical activity under various conditions.

A critical question in this context is how the musculoskele-

tal, cardiovascular and respiratory systems interact through

neural and endocrine mechanisms. This also includes mech-

anisms by which muscular functions can be tuned to pre-

vent diseases and reduce or even reverse their progression.

Candidates should demonstrate an exceptional potential

to develop an innovative and collaborative research pro-

gram focusing on muscular function at the crossroad of

various research areas such as biomechanics, biochemistry,

bioenergetics, cardiovascular and respiratory physiology,

neuroscience, endocrinology, metabolic homeostasis, and

physics. While the primary focus is on the human organism,

a systemic and synthetic approach through comparative

studies integrating animal and mathematical models is

of great importance at the interface between movement

sciences and sport, molecular health sciences, nutritional

biology, and medicine.

The successful candidate is expected to establish an inter-

disciplinary research group focused on exercise physiology.

Specific research topics may vary within this field, but the

research should follow a systemic, integrative approach,

comprising all levels of scientific analysis, from the molecu-

lar through the cellular to the whole body. Beside a formal

education in physiology, biology or a closely related disci-

pline, the candidate should have a proven track record in

molecular and cellular techniques.

Additional prerequisites are a strong motivation and an

undisputable commitment to undergraduate and graduate

student education. The professorship will be embedded in

the Department’s undergraduate and graduate program

in Health Sciences and Technology. The professor will be

expected to teach both undergraduate (in German or Eng-

lish) and graduate level courses (in English).

The professorship, envisaged to be established jointly with

the University of Zurich, comes with several salary lines

for academic and technical assistants, start-up funds and

annual allocations to establish a world-class research pro-

gram. Access to technology platforms of ETH Zurich and the

University of Zurich (Functional Genomics Centre, Imaging,

Mass spectrometry, etc.) is ensured.

Please apply online at www.facultyaffairs.ethz.ch. Your

application should include your curriculum vitae and a list

of refereed publications. The letter of application should

be addressed to the President of ETH Zurich, Prof. Dr. Ralph

Eichler. The closing date for applications is May 31, 2011.

With a view towards increasing the number of female pro-

fessors, ETH Zurich specifically encourages qualified female

candidates to apply.

Medical Faculty

The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Zurich invites

applications for a

Professorship in Muscle Plasticitylocated at Orthopaedic UniversityHospital Balgrist

The professorship, envisaged to be established jointly

with ETH Zurich, is expected to perform research with

an emphasis on muscle plasticity that should add to

the body of knowledge in regulation and modulation

of structural adaptation to imposed demands, growth,

atrophy, degeneration, regeneration and metabolic

activity. This includes assessment of the form and func-

tion of the entire muscle. Mechanisms of development

and growth of muscle, fat and connective tissue includ-

ing the interaction of these different types of tissue

are to be evaluated. There is a focus on translational

aspects. The new knowledge should be transferred

to the treatment of orthopaedic patients, for instance

by adapting the type, technique and timing of surgical

or conservative treatment. The Professor in Muscle

Plasticity is expected to establish a research group with

a biological focus, closely interacting with the tendon

research group with an engineering approach, as well

as with clinical research groups at Balgrist Hospital

and related institutions. Both basic scientists as well as

MDs with adequate additional qualifications are en-

couraged to apply for this position.

The finances for a basic research group will be provided,

as well as research space and infrastructure, to be

expanded in 2014 or 2015 (new research and develop-

ment building). Access to technology platforms of ETH

Zurich and the University of Zurich (Functional Genomics

Centre, Imaging, Mass spectrometry etc.) is ensured.

Please submit your application (in print form and on CD)

together with a curriculum vitae and a list of refereed

publications to the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine,

Prof. Dr. Klaus Grätz, c/o Mrs. Julia Gysel, Pestalozzi-

strasse 3, CH-8091 Zürich, Switzerland (or via e-mail to

[email protected]), no later than May 31st,

2011. The University of Zurich specifically encourages

qualified female candidates to apply.

The symposium will be held on September 1 (and 2),

2011, at the Auditorium of University Hospital Balgrist,

Forchstrasse 340, 8008 Zurich, Switzerland.
