will be a wide range of learners.

SC.O.1.1.5 Use safe and proper techniques for handling, manipulating and caring for science materials (e.g. follow safety rules, maintain a clean work area, or treat living

organisms humanely).SC.O. 1.1.6 Collect, record and compare information using a variety of classification

system (e.g., ordering, sorting, or sequencing) and using a variety of communication techniques (e.g., sketches, pictographs, or models).

SC.O.1.2.2 Identify that most living things need water, food, light, and air.SC.O.1.2.3 Describe changes in life cycle of living organisms.

SC.O.1.2.5 Depict movement of living things in air, water, and on land.SC.O.1.2.7 Recognize that material can be recycled and used again, sometimes in

different forms.SC.O.12.17 Use a model to compare land and water features on the Earth.

SC.O.1.3.4 Listen to and be tolerant of different viewpoint while in collaborative groups.SC.O.1.3.5 Develop respect and responsibility for the environment by engaging

conversation practices (e.g., recycling or trash clean up).

Day One

The first day I will introduce the unit and explain what will be happening throughout the

next week and a half. I will have the students do a KWL on the oceans and the living/non-living organisms that live in it.. I will write their “K” and “W” responses on a

large poster so everyone can see what everyone has wrote and if they would like to add anything that they want to know throughout the days, they may do so. Then I will read

Oceans by Katharine Jones Carter with the document camera so the children will have a good view of the photos and text. I will teach them about the different oceans around

the world and do a worksheet, a map, they can color depicting were they are in the earth. This day I will also show the photo story, on the smart board, which I put

together, on ocean life. Also, introduce them to the bulletin board I created and go over the interactive aspect of it.

Page 8: Ci 350 Unit Plan

Day Two

We will introduce the animals that live in the ocean. Such as; fish, starfish, sea turtles, sea horses, octopus, sharks, whales, dolphins, coral,

etc. We will go on the internet to National Geographic for kids and explore their website to see all of the photos and facts they have on the basic ocean life as well as each of the other creatures. I will have them

choose or I will choose for them a creature of their very own to do a small report on. They will have until the end of the unit. Their goal is to find at least two different photographs of their animal and write two sentences

about what they learned. We will make a colorful bulletin board of everyone’s and display it. Each day I will give them 10 minutes, depending on resources, on the computer to do their research.

Page 9: Ci 350 Unit Plan

Day Three

I will start out this day I will focus on the fish. Get more into detail about

where, how they live, what they eat. Have a digital storytelling in the classroom and this information. I will have created a story with the

technology and resources I have and share it with the children. This will have all the information I will like them to understand about these ocean

creatures. It will be interactive and entertaining. I will try to keep their interest and motivate them to want to learn more on the subject.

Page 10: Ci 350 Unit Plan

Day Four

This day I will focus on sharks. I prepared a PowerPoint presentation on shark facts to get then interested. I will also have a guest speaker on marine biology. This will give them a first hand

view on what goes on under the sea. I will have the speaker go over the safety rule of the water and how to stay save when in

the ocean. Then go on the internet to explore sharks.

Page 11: Ci 350 Unit Plan

Day Five

This will be day on dolphins and whales. Read the book Baby Whales Drink Milk by Barbra Juster Esbensen. This book focuses on the

importance of how whales are different from fish. After learning about whales we will explore dolphins on the internet using the scholastic

website. This day I would like to have an art worksheet/handout. I’ll have the students draw a picture of their favorite thing they have learned so

far and make sure they know the name of the animal.

Page 12: Ci 350 Unit Plan

Day SixHave all of the children and I go outside for today’s lesson. I will go over how to keep

Earth as healthy as possible. Talk about the dangers of littering on land as well as the ocean. We will as a class, create recycle bins of, paper, plastic, aluminum, and glass for

our room and school. Put the students in groups and assign each group a specific product that is recyclable; paper plastic, aluminum, glass, etc. I will have them

understand the importance of reusing and how it is done. Learn the affect of littering and waste have on the environment. If possible, go as far as we can and clean up the

school and surrounding grounds, recycle what we can. Give them an assignment to do the same around their house and bring in things to recycle. The main goal for the day is to show them we need to keep the land and oceans clean so we and all of the planet’s

creatures have a nice fresh and pretty place to live.

Page 13: Ci 350 Unit Plan

Day Seven

I will put the students into groups and in these groups we are going to create a book. Each group of about three-four students will create a sentence per person and a picture. Each picture and sentence will be on something they have learned throughout the unit.

Perhaps some students learned something different than the people in their group. I want this exercise to bring out collaboration and cooperation with fellow students.

When everyone is finished I will bind all the pages together to make a classroom book on ocean life. We will have finished our creature project and those will be made into a bulletin board for the hallway, for everyone to see what we have learned. I will video

tape the students with the Flip, explaining their creature and put it on TeacherTube for their families to see. This will also be our conclusion on the KWL chart. Have each

student give at least one example on what we have learned for our poster. Also we will have the handout I created which is a BINGO games.

Page 14: Ci 350 Unit Plan

Each of my students will be required to take part in each of the lessons daily. I will make sure they stay on task and are learning. Have them focus when they get off task. Each student will be expected to have active

participation with individual work and especially group work and outdoor activities. Everything in the

unit is something the students will need and it is important to me that they enjoy all of the projects

and events during the week, so having their involvement and interest in very essential.

Page 15: Ci 350 Unit Plan

SC.O.1.1.5 This is the day the guest speaker comes and explains the safety and rules for ocean life care. He will talk about the dangers of the ocean and explain how to avoid harm. I will have a small verbal test to make sure

they comprehend to safety rules. Repeat things as necessary. SC.O. 1.1.6 This is when we use the KWL chart, we learn about prior knowledge of the ocean and apply it

through the unit. The completion of the chart will be my assessment on how I feel the students understand the unit.

SC.O.1.2.2 We use this throughout the entire unit when we learn about each animal’s environment and learn how they survive. When we go over a certain animal and their environment ill will have them explain back to

me things that were in each lesson, have each student give a fact.SC.O.1.2.3 Learn about how the ocean is a big “house” and how each animal is a part of that and is essential.

This will be evaluated at the end when we put our book and bulletin board together on how well the information was received.

SC.O.1.2.5 This is basically our entire unit. Learning how the ocean works and its creatures. This will be evaluated the as the previous objective, at the end of the unit and the information they students are able to

give back with their projects.SC.O.1.2.7 We have and full daily lesson for this. The students learn about the importance of recycling and

how to recycle. How well they cooperate during the activity and their ability to identify recyclable materials.SC.O.12.17 We use a map to differentiate all of the oceans in the world and were they are located. After they complete the worksheet. I will evaluate their work on their ability to follow direction and neatness of their

work.SC.O.1.3.4 This is when we get in groups and makes sure they stay on task and relate well to others around them. Keep them focused and make sure they respect one another. Make sure students work well together.

SC.O.1.3.5 This goes along with our recycling day. We will pick up trash and keep this going through the year. This evaluation is the same as the recycling. Make sure they can properly recycle.
