This month I thought that I would give you a few tips to remember while making your Eagle Ranch Quilt.

*Please return patterns that are in your kits.  It helps save us money by reusing them.

*Not all patterns come 60" x 72", so we have to modify the pattern to make them bigger or smaller.  The goal is to make the quilt as close to 60"x72" requirement as we feasibly can.  We ask that you read over your pattern before you get started to ensure you understand any notes we have made.  You may save yourself from making too many blocks!!

*Please iron your seams open as you go as it will make a nicer product for the quilter.

Thanks to all the members who have picked up quilt kits so far this year and all the finished quilts we have received!  You guys are great!

What is a Moda Cake Mix? It’s a recipe for block parts that makes baking a Layer Cake quilt easier than ever. This unique triangle paper is designed to work in conjunction with Moda’s 10″ square Layer Cakes. Each tablet has 42 sheets – one for each layer in a Layer Cake – and a couple of extras for practice. Each pad also includes a few simple block and layout ideas – just add 1 or 2 Layer Cakes and you’re ready to start stitching.

There are eight different Cake Mixes available… check them out at http://blog.modafabrics.com/cakemix/There is also a step by step instruction sheet to get you started http://unitednotions.com/cm_instructions.pdfAnd also a fair amount of instructional videos as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_pmZU-WjaA

Here are some examples of quilts made from these mixes.

HCQG meetings are on the FIRST Monday of each month unless that day is a holiday (then the meeting is the second Monday of the month)Social Hour is at 9:30 a.m. and the meeting starts at 10:00 Project Day is held THIRD Monday of each month at the church at 10:00 a.m. bring anything you are working on as well as a dish to share (or just bring your own lunch if that works better for you).

Are you new to the Hall County Quilters Guild?Check out our website at HCQG.org for valuable information like how to make a name badge, our policies and procedures, how to make a quilt for Eagle Ranch and even photos of quilts that our members have made.

So what are pre-cuts? If you are relatively new to the world of quilting, then you are in for a treat. Fabric manufacturers are putting together pre-cut collections showcasing all of the fabrics from a collection. In doing this, fabric manufacturers have simplified the entire fabric purchasing process and made it easier for all of us to do what we really love, which is sewing. Many of the bundle names are specific to Moda fabrics with names such as Jelly Rolls, Layer Cakes, Charm Packs, and Jolly Bars. These terms have now become commonplace in the quilting world which is why I will be using them.

Benefits of Pre-cuts1) One of the biggest benefits of pre-cuts is how little space they require. Jelly Rolls, Charm Packs, Jolly Bars, and Layer Cakes can all fit neatly into a drawer.2) There is very little fabric wasted when using pre-cuts. Many patterns are now designed to use most of a pre-cut set, leaving you very few scraps to store.3) When you buy a pre-cut bundle you’re able to sample from the entire collection. That’s not always the case when you purchase yardage at a quilt shop or online. Many times sellers do not purchase every fabric in a particular line.4) The fabrics all match. Everything is color coordinated and blends beautifully with the entire collection.5) You save a ton of time by not cutting fabric – leaving you more time to sew.

•A fat quarter bundle is the most common of all pre-cuts. Each piece of fabric is 18″ x 22″

•A fat eighth bundle is very similar to a fat quarter bundle only half as wide. Similar to a fat quarter, fat eights are 9″ x 22″.

•Most Jelly Rolls contain 42 strips of2.5″ x 42″ (WOF) fabric. Sometimes called Rolie Polies or Roll Ups.

•A Layer Cake is a collection of 10″x 10″ squares that usually contain one of each print in a collection. Sometimes called Patty Cakes or 10″ Stackers.

•A Charm Pack is a collection of 5″ x 5″ squares that usually contains one of each print in a collection. Sometimes called Bali Packs and 5″ Stackers.

•A Mini Charm Pack is a collection of 2.5″ x 2.5″ squares that usually contains one of each print in a collection.

•You will also find precuts in hexagons, circles, and triangles.

10” and 5” Slicer rulersVanessa (a.k.a- Crafty Gemini) created some rulers to help us maximize the fabric in a 10” and 5” precut squares. She has provided free videos to show you how to use them.
