youhowIknowthis.Oureldestchild,Sophie,isnowastudentattheUniversityofSt.Andrew’sinScotland.Lastwinter,whenshewashomefortheChristmasbreak,sheaskedmeifIthoughtsheshouldtakeacourseinthebagpipesduringthesecondsemester.AnundergraduateatSt.Andrew’sispermittedtostudythebagpipesandtakelessonsforcreditforonesemester.Myimmediateresponsewas,“Absolutely!”Whatbetterplacetolearnthebagpipesorgolf(whichshealsodid)thanScotland?Itwasano-brainer.
Mysecondresponsewas,“I’lldoit,too!”Inourfirstyearofmarriage,SueandIvisitedScotlandandIboughtakilt.Bagpipeshavealwaysseemedtheperfectacces-sory.Ihavelongwantedtolearnhowtoplaythepipes,andherewasmychance.IalreadyhadbothapracticechanterandaninstructionbookthatIpickedupsomeyearsagoinaScottishstoreinSaltLakeCity(alikelyplaceforScotlandenthusiasts,youarethinking).AfterashortadventureonGoogleandacoupleofphonecalls,Ilocatedaninstructorwhowaswillingtotakemeon.
Theonlypotentialdownsidewasthatmybelovedwifefirmlydislikesbagpipemusic,evenwhenplayedbytheRoyalScotsDra-goonGuard,indicatingtheoddsweren’tgreatthatshe’dbequitebeasthrilledaboutthisplanasI.Ican’tquiteblameher.Torefertotheprac-ticeinstrumentinmyhandswithatermlike“chanter”isslightlymisleading.Maybesquawker,squealer,orscreecherwouldbemoreprecise.Ourson,Isaac,claimsthatmypracticingprovidesaremarkablyaccurateimita-tionofacatinseveredistress.
ThegoodnewsisthatIfoundaninventiveguyinNorthernCalifornia(anotherlikelybagpipeMecca)whomakesanelectronicpracticechanter,completewithdrones(theconstantlownotesthatcomeoutofthethreepipespointingbackoverthepiper’sshoulder)andvibrato.Thereasonthisisgoodnewsisbecausetheelectricchanter,cleverlycalledMacPipes,hasavolume
controlANDisequippedwithanearphonejack!Withearphones,IcanplaythemanywhereandanytimeIwantwith-outdisturbingasoul!Athome,onaplane,inahotelroom,lateatnight,earlyinthemorn-ing,evenwhenSueis
aroundorthechildrenaredoingtheirhomework.WithmyMacPipes,nooneisoffended.TheguyinCaliforniaisamarriage-saver.
Ihaverecentlyprogressedtothepointwheremyteacherhasmeplayingrealbagpipes,which,unliketheMacPipes,arestartlinglyloudandhavenovolumecontrolorearphonejack.SomyplayingtherealdealislimitedtowhenIamtheonlyonehome(notoften)orwhenI’matmyinstructor’shouse(evenlessoften).Thismakesforslowbutmeasurableprogress,andmyteacher,SandyHain,an80-year-oldformerPipeMajorofthe2ndBattalionoftheBlackWatch(whoonceperformedwithRodStewart!),tellsmeinhisthickScottishbroguethatIamdoingverywell.AtleastthatiswhatIthinkheissaying.Iambeginningtothinkhealsomaybealittledeaf.
SothatishowIknowthereareninenotesonthebag-pipes,becauseIhavelearnedhowtoplayallofthemandcanevenplaytheminawaythatproducesarecogniz-abletune.IcanplayDannyBoy,ScotlandtheBrave,theCaissonsGoRollingAlong,GodBlessAmerica,Scotswahae,HighlandLaddie,LandofMyYouth,andJingleBells,someofyourrealfavorites.Icanalsoplayhymn

Thereareeightfingerholesinthechanter,thepartofthebagpipesusedtoplaythetune,andyoumightthinkthatifyoustartwithallofthemcoveredandliftyourfingersinorder,startingatthebottom,youcouldbeginonlowGandenduphappilyathighA.Butnosuchluck!Infact,atnotimedoesthepiperhavefewerthanhalfoftheholescovered!Eventhoughthefingeringcom-binationsarecomplicated,withregularpracticeyoucangettheninenotesdownandmovefromonetoanotherwithsometimesamazinggrace.Thehardpartisthatabagpiperrarelymovesfromonenotetoanotherwithoutaddingfromonetofourquicklittlenotesinbetween,embellishmentsthatgivethepipestheircolor.Andtheselittleadd-onsarestrictlyprescribed;youcan’tjustthrowtheminorpretendyourmistakesareinfactintentionalflourishes.Theyhavenameslikehits,doublings,birls,throws,taorluaths,andgracenotes.
Ofcourse,myfavoriteisthegracenote.Mostcom-monlyitoccurswhenanoteisintroducedbyaverybriefhighG,accomplishedwithanextremelyquickliftanddropoftheleftindexfingeronthetophole.Thegracenoteconnectsthenewnotetowhatevernoteprecededit.Itbrightenstherelationshipbetweenthem,eveniftheyarethesamenote.Iloveitsname:gracenote.Itdoesjustthat,gracesthenotesofthemelodywithcolorandcon-nection,enhancingtheirrelationship.
Forme,thehardestpartofpipingismanagingthegracenotesandotherembellishmentsthatmakethemu-sicsorichand,tomyear,beautiful.Ittakesdisciplinetomaketheirincorporationfluidandnatural.Insomewaysthisistrueinthemelodyoflife,Ithink.ItisthegracesofGodthatcolorandconnectourlives,simpleandoftensubtleconnectionsthatchallengeourtendenciestowarddetachmentandisolation,gracesofdelightandwonderandhope,ofjoyandaffectionandconcern,ofinspira-tionandcompassionandcare.TobevehiclesofGod’sgracetakesdisciplinedwork.Ittakespracticetomakeourselvesopenandavailabletothosegenerositiesoftheheartthatmoredivinelyconnectustoothers.YetwithdisciplinedattentiontothesubtleworkingsofGod’sownspiritamongus,wecomenotonlytorecognizeandbetransformedbyGod’sgracenotes,butindeedtobecome,ourselves,transformativenotesofgrace.Amazing.

Leadershipisn’teasy.Inpolitics,business,education,andthechurchwehearconstantcallsforvisionaryleaders,empoweringleaders,dynamic
leaders,andsteadyleaders.Andtomakemattersmoredifficult,inthechurchweadd“servant”tothelist.
Whatwereallyseemtowantissomeonewhoembod-iesallthosequalitiesatthesametime.“Willallrock-steady,highlyresponsive,dynamic,visionary,innovative,empoweringservantleaderspleasestandup?”
Thatsaid,thereareatleasttwogoodreasonswehearaboutleadershipsomuch:1)itreallydoesmatter;and2)theworldhaschangedsosignificantlythattheoldwaysofleadingoftennolongerwork.
Touseanexamplefrombusiness,itusedtobethatifyourwidgetwasn’tworkingyoumostlikelyknewhowtofixit.Further,onceitwasfixedyoucouldprobablyassumethatitwouldstayfixed,atleastforawhile.Thatmeantyoucouldwithconfidencemoveontothenextproblem.
Thisappliedinthechurchaswell,butasweknowthatisnolongerthecase.Approachesthatworkedsowellforsolongnolongerfindtractiontoday.LeadershipguruRonaldHeifetzcallsthis“leadershipinapermanentcrisis.”Whathemeansisthatthepaceoftechnological,economic,political,andsocialchangethesedaysissuchthatnomatterwhatourfieldwecannolongerexpectthingstosomedayslowdownand“returntonormal.”
Thisdoesn’tmeanwecan’tlead.Whatitmeansisthateffectivelyleadingacongregationtodayisaboutmakingthebestdecisionswecantomeettoday’schallengeswhileatthesametimesettinginmotionprocessesthatwillhelpusadapttonewchallengesalreadyontheirway.Heifetzcallsthat“adaptiveleadership;”onewaytothinkofitisengag-ingin“bestpractices”evenaswedevelop“nextpractices.”
It’satallorder,butanexcitingoneaswell.AndbeingpartoftheEpiscopalChurchmeansthatweneednotbealoneinsuchwork.Ascongregations,missionareas,dio-ceses,andthenationalchurch,wecanworktogethertolearnandengageinbestpracticeswhileatthesametimediscerninganddevelopingnextpractices.
That’smyhopeforus.ImaginethattheDioceseofOhiosomedayhasamongthefinestlayleadershipdevel-opmentprocessesinourchurch.Imaginemissionareaworkshops,diocesanevents,andparishprocessesthatconsistentlydeliverfirst-rateeducationandtrainingex-periencesequippinglaypeopletoformpartnershipswithclergyforincreasinglyeffectiveparishleadership.Wecanmakethatarealityifwereallybelieveitisimportant.

theterriblethingsweareaskedtoendure,wewhoarechildrenofGodbyadoptionandgrace.”

In1986,theworshipcommitteeofSt.JamesEpisco-palChurchinWooster,Ohio,waslookingforinnovativeandmeaningfulwaystoengagethecongregationduringLent.TheydecidedtocommissionandinstalltheStations of the Cross.Artistandpriest,theRev.CarlWarrenPeter-son(1939–1991),wasenlistedtocreatetheimages.Alikelychoiceconsideringhewasalsotheirrector.
EachweekduringLentofthatyear,PetersondrewtwopastelsandpresentedthemattheWednesdayeveningLentenmeditations.Hediscussedtheartis-ticintentandtheo-logicalimplicationsofeachscene.
Theywerewellreceivedbythecongregationandinthefollowingyears,theStationsbecamesomethingofaLententradi-tionatSt.James.Whennotonview,theyarecaredfor
asiftheywereinamuseum,archivallyframedandstoredinacustom-madecabinet.
In2004,theyalsoinspiredanillustratedbook.ItincludedmeditationswrittenbyparishionerCe-liaSmartandeditedbyKimballWatkins,illustratedwithphotographsbyWilliamBlanchard.Theimpe-tusforthepublicationcamefromanunlikelysource.GraceWalworth,thirteenyearsoldatthetime,wasaparishioner,Smart’spianopupil,andagreatadmireroftheStations.Gracesaidthatthey“madeherfeelclosertoJesus,”andaskedforphotographsofthembecausesheandherfamilyweremovingaway.
Smartwrotethemeditationswithheryoungfriendinmind,howevertheactofwritingturnedouttobequiteextraordinary.Ini-tially,shewashav-ingsometroublefindingtherighttimetogetstarted.Nearingthedeadline,shesatdowntowrite.Muchtohersur-prise,thewordsflowedeffort-lesslyoutofherinoneday.Smart,convincedthatitwasamomentofdivinegrace,describeditasan“otherkindofworldexperience.”

Origins from Christian PilgrimageTheoriginsoftheStations of the Cross(alsoknownasThe Way of the Cross)datebacktoearlyChristianpilgrimagestoJerusalem.TravelersvisitedthesitesofthepassionfromtheplaceofChrist’sarresttothesiteofthecrucifixiontothetomb.DuringMedievaltimes,theFranciscansrecreatedthewayofthecrossingardensandchapels,usingstat-uesandpaintedimages,oneforeach“stop.”TheStationshavesincebeenubiquitousartisticfeaturesinRomanCatholicChurchesandlessfrequentlyfoundinotherChristianchurches.Typicallytherearefourteenstations;however,asinthecaseoftheSt.James’stations,thatnumbercanvary.
Thetenpastelsarerelativelysmall,measuringabouttwobythreefeet,andareonblackpaper.Eachhasapowerfuliconicfeelandrestrainedexpression.Stronglinesandcolors,andthejudicioususeofthecolorred,evoketheintensityofthepassion.ThescenesareChrist before Pilate, The Centurion lays the Cross on Jesus, Jesus meets His Mother, Simon bears the Cross for Jesus, Jesus consoles a Woman of Jerusalem, Jesus is Stripped, Jesus is Crucified, Jesus Dies, Jesus is Taken Down,andJesus is Laid in the Tomb.
Thecompositions,whilepayinghomagetoartofthepast,focusontheessentialnarratives,bringingtheviewerupclosetoJesus’face.Petersonwrote,“theChurchhasencouragedartandmusicthroughoutitshistoryandartistshaverenderedBiblicalthemesaccordingtothetastesoftheireras.I,too,aminclinedtocreateinacontemporarystyle,butIhaveagreatrespectandappreciationfortradition-alandthevarietyofimageswehaveinheritedinreligiousart.”
Both/AndCarlPetersonwasbothanartistandapriest.“I’vealwaysbeenapersonwhohastwomeansofexpression—onehasbeenart,andonereligion.”One
localjournalistobserved,“ratherthanbeingtwoforcespullinghiminoppositedirec-tions,FatherCarlhasfoundthathisartandhisministrycompli-mentandfulfilloneanother.”
Asanartist,Petersonwasfore-mostasculptor,whocreatedworksthatvariedinscalefromtabletoptomonumental.Heworkedinwood,stone,weldedsteel,plaster,andbronze.Healsopainted,drew,cre-atedtextiles,andevenwrotepoetry.Althoughthemediavaried,hissubjectmatterwasprimarilyreligiousorspiritual.
BorninKansasCity,Kansas,andraisedinLouisville,Kentucky,CarltookartclassesasachildattheArtCenterAssociationSchool.Hegradu-atedfromtheUniversityofLouisvillewithaMasterofArtsDegreeandheearnedaMasterofDivinityfromTheGeneralTheologicalSeminaryinNewYorkCity.
Petersonwaswellconnectedintheartworld.HewenttoschoolwithabstractexpressionistandcolorfieldpainterSamGilliamandstudiedunderUniversityofLouisvilleartistandeducatorMarySpencerNay,anartistwhohadasignificantcareerthatincludedpaintingmuralsfortheWorksProgressAdministrationandsummersinProvincetown,workingwithartistssuchassurrealistBorisMargo.PerhapsnoartistcapturedhisadmirationmorethanBritishsculp-torHenryMoore,however.
Duringhislifetime,Petersoninterwovehistwovocations.HewasanEpiscopalpriestinKen-tuckyuntil1980,whenhebecamerectorofSt.James.Hediedofcancerin1991andisburiedinthecolumbariumatSt.James.
Petersonwasabletoproducearemarkablebodyofwork,espe-ciallyconsideringheneverhadadedicatedstudio.Manyofhistwo-dimensionalworkswerecreatedonaruginhishousethathiswife,Marilyn,specificallychosebecauseithadabusypattern;itwouldcamouflageinkandpaintstains.
Thelogisticsofhismonumentalsculptureswerecomplicatedwithoutastudio.Forexample,whenhestartedworkontheUniversalMadonnaandChild,hewenttothelocalhardwarestore,satdowninthemiddleoftheaisle,andpiecedplumbingfixturestogethertomakethearmature.Assizeandweightmademovingitaroundhishousebyhimselfdifficult,itwas

outfittedwithwheelsandpartialStyrofoaminnardstolightentheload.Aftercompletion,theworkwasexhibitedandfoundahomeattheWoosterInterfaithHousingfrom1996to2009.ItisnowonviewonthelowerlevelofTrinityCathedral.
Intheprocessofadaptingtothelimitationsofhisworkspace,hedevisedamethodtomakesculpturesinhishousebymakingmoldsoutofsandandpressingapinkishstonein-fusedplastermixture,creatingaseriesoftotemicwarriorfigures.Hequicklysoldanumberofthoseworks,pro-vidingthefundsforawelder,whichheusedtomakemoresculptures.
Throughouthislife,Petersonwasabletoshowhisworkinanumberofartgalleries;however,attimes,hisworksweredisplayedinnon-traditionalvenues.TheEpiscopalChurchWomenofKentuckyhelpedprovidethefundstosendPetersontoafewGeneralConventionsofThe
EpiscopalChurch.Intheseinstances,hesetupaboothandnotonlysoldhisartwork,butearnedcommissions,includingsomeforliturgicalobjects,vestments,andportraitbusts.
Forexample,hewascontractedtomakeacopperrepoussé(embossed)andbronzeprocessional/sanctuarycrossfortheDioceseofGuatemala.AnothercommissioncamefromtheclergyoftheDioceseofOhio.ItwasacrosierforSuffraganBishopArthurB.Williamsinhonorofhisconsecrationin1986.BishopWilliamsandPeter-sondecidedtogetherontheiconog-raphy.TheupperportionwascastinbronzeattheStudioFoundryinClevelandandcontainssymbolsoftheTrinity,theBaptism,theEucharist,andYorubadesigns.ThecenterscenedepictsSimonofCyrenehelpingChristcarrythecross,areferencetosharedministry.JeffMiller,aMenno-nitecraftsman,madethewalnutstaff.
PetersoncreatedanothersetoftheStationsoftheCrossforSt.Mark’s,Canton.TheycurrentlyhangonthewallsoftheSanctuaryandwerecom-missionedbyMr.andMrs.JamesLuntztotheGlo-ryofGodandinmemoryoftheirson,CharlesLuntz.
Verydifferentfromthepastels,eachofthetenwallsculpturesconsistssimply
ofablack,woodencross,embel-lishedwithabstractedhandcraftedbronzeshapesthatevoketheessentialmovements,emotions,andsymbolsofthepassion.Petersonalsomadethebronzeandredenamelcrossthathangsoverthealtar.
AlthoughtheStationsatSt.JamesareremovedattheendofLent,an-othersetofworksbyPetersonishungforEaster.Large,brightgreen,purple,pink,andyellowfloralsilkbannersfilltheSanctuary,createdwithfellowpa-rishionerJimHampshirefortheRub-bermaidCompany.TheywerebasedonHenryVanDyke’s1907hymn:
Joyful, joyful we adore the, Glory of glory, Lord of love; Hearts unfold like flowers before thee, Praising thee, their sun above
Amanoftwovocations,therecameatimewhenPetersonwasunsurewhichdirectiontochoose.Certainlypursuingbothpresentedchallenges.Hewentthrougharigorouscareerdiscernmentpro-cessandnotsurprisingly,theresultingrecommendationwasthatheshouldpursueboth.
Hewrote,“Theancienttraditionofthepaintingofaniconasanactofworshipholdsspecialmeaningforme.Eachofusneedstoberefreshedfromtimetotime.Asaclergyman,spendingmuchofmytimeinvolvedwithothersandgoingfrommeetingtomeeting,takingthetimetocreateaworkofartallowsforreflectivecontemplationandenablesmetoapproachmypastoraltaskswithrenewedenthusiasm.Ihopesomeofthosewhoviewmyworkwillalsoberenewedinaspecialway.”

Greetings!ItisgoodtobebackintheDioceseof
TangaafterspendingthepasteightmonthstravelingthroughouttheDioceseofOhio,build-inginterestforacompanionrelationshipbetweenourtwodioceses.KnowingverylittleabouttheDioceseofOhio,itwasastruggleatfirsttofigureouthowtoproceed,butIwasquicktofindpeoplewhowereea-gertohelpmeandgetinvolvedincompanionshipactivities.AfterasuccessfulstayinOhio,IwillbeinTangaforthenexttwoandahalfmonths,leavinginAugust.HereIwillbeworkingonthenextstagesofthecompanionship—connectingpeopleandbuildingrelationships:sevenrepresentativesfromourdiocesewillbemeetingwithcounterpartsinTanga.Iamsohappytoseeoldfriendsandtomeetnewfriends.
OnmyfirstdaybackattheDioceseofTanga’soffice,IpresentedaframedpictureofBishopsJohnBurtandYohannaJumaafrom1973,whichtheRev.BrianWil-bertfoundinthearchivesofChristChurch,Oberlin.Laterthatday,areturncelebrationwasheldformeatSt.Raphael’shospital.There,IpresentedabookcalledTheArtandSoulofNursingbyNan-netteBedway,inassociationwiththeFrancisPayneBoltonSchoolofNursingofCaseWesternReserveUniversityinClevelandtoTheresiaGawileandJaneMbuji,thehospitalmatronsatSt.Raphael’s.ThebookwasgiventomebyAnnFarmerfromSt.Paul’s,ClevelandHeights,andwillbeoneofthefirstbooksatthenewnursingschoolbeingestablishedatthehospital.Thesetwogifts:thepicture—acelebra-
tionofthehistoricalpastbetweenourtwodioceses,andthebook—acelebrationofanewbeginningbetweenourdiocesessymbolizenewopportunitiesforus.Inmanyways,wearedifferentculturally,butweareboundtogetherthroughtheAnglicanCommunion,whichgivesusasharedhistoryandasharedhopeforthefuture.Thisiswhatmakescompanionrelationshipssospecial.

May29th.ThisyeartherewasaspecialadditiontotheoldEnglishtraditionofblessingthefourcornersofthechurch’spropertyeveryyearinMay.StandinginfrontofthenewlyexpandedSundayschoolgardenattheclimaxoftheprocession,TreasurerandFinanceCommitteeChairJackCraigsetfiretothechurch’smortgagetocelebratepayingitoffearly.
“Payingoffthemortgageearlyisanexpressionofourvibrantcommunitylifeandourboundlesspossibili-tiesforthefuture,”saysSteveMitchell,seniorwardenoftheparish.TheRev.JulieFisher,rector,concurs.“OurleadersfeltthatGodwascallingustotakethisstepinfaith,”shesaid,“sowecouldfocusmoreontheministriesthebuildingwasmeanttosupport,andlessonourmonthlybills.”
ChristChurchhasundergoneseveralstagesofcon-structionstartingin1837.Thenewwing,forwhichthemortgagewastakenout,wascompletedin2001.Nextyearwillbethechurch’s175thanniversary.

Findingpracticalinnovationinthesetougheconomictimes,ChristChurch,ShakerHeights,haslookedtomakethemostoftheirresources,
reachingouttoseveralotherlocalcommunityorga-nizationsinneed.UnityofGreaterCleveland,anon-denominational,God-centeredchurch,andVerbBallets,anon-profitgroupdedicatedtopromotingcontempo-rarydance,bothrecentlyrentedspaceinsidetheChristChurchbuildinglocatedonWarrens-villeCenterRoad,amovethathasprovedbeneficialtoallsides.
Thepossibilityofasharedspacewasfirstputforwardovertwoyearsago,ataluncheonmeetingofShakerHeightsclergythatincludedboththeRev.PeterFaassofChristChurchandtheRev.JoanGattusoofUnityofGreaterCleveland.Facedwithadecliningmembership,GattusovoicedherconcernstoFaassthatmaintainingtheupkeepofUnity’sownbuildingwasbecomingprob-lematic.ConsideringChristChurch’sownstruggleforincome,Faassputforwardasimplesuggestion:thatUnityofGreaterClevelandrentspaceinsideChristChurch.
WhileGattusoinitiallydeclinedtheoffer,hopingthatFaass’planwouldbeunnecessary,theproblemeventuallygrewtooverwhelmingproportions,andabankforeclo-sureonUnity’sbuildinginlate2010forcedtheissue.ButFaassreaffirmedhisoriginalproposal.AsGattusorecalls,“Petersaidtome:‘Ifyouneedaspaceforfourmonths,fouryears,orforever,wehaveroomforyou.Andthatwasjustthemostheartwarmingthinghecouldsaytome.”Adealwasquicklystruckforasix-monthleasebeginningonFebruary1of2011.
A Seamless MoveForGattusoandUnity,themovewasasseamlessasonecouldhope.ChristChurch’ssite,barelyhalfablockfromUnity’soldbuildingonthecornerofWarrensvilleandFarnsleighRoad,keptthingssimpleforthedis-
locatedcongregation;asUnitySecretaryRudiBarnesexplains,“Theonlythingthatchangedonouraddresswasthenumber.Ourmembersdidn’thavetofindanewrouteoradifferentsuburb,they’rejustcomingthesamedirectionthey’vealwayscometogotochurch.”
Luckily,theadvantageofChristChurch’slocationwasaccompaniedbyanequallypracticalinterior.Withatotalmembershipofroughly100parishionersand40to50
regularSundayattendees,UnityfoundtheGoodShepherdroom(formerlyusedforreceptions)atChristChurchtobeaperfectsanctuaryspacefortheirweeklyservices.Inaddition,UnityisrentingaclergyofficeandoneofthetworoomsthatmakeupChristChurch’sparishoffice.
“Ithinkit’savery21stcenturythingtodo,”enthusedGattusore-gardingthearrangement.“There
arethesemassivechurchesthatdon’thavemassivecongregationsanymore.Ithinkit’saverygreenthingtodo,ratherthanjustlettingthespaceliedormant.”Thoughtherewereafewearlyconcernsregardingtheobstaclesoftwoworshippinggroupssharingthesamebuilding,ChristChurchandUnityareinthemidstofnegotiatinganextensiontoUnity’slease.“Wewantedtogiveourselvesa‘dating’period,”explainsFaass,“wherewewouldseewhatsomeoftheissuesmightbebetweenus;andotherthanacoupleissuesofsoundinfiltration[ChristChurch’s10:30a.m.SundayliturgyoverlapswithUnity’s11:00service],whichwehavehandled,therereallyhavebeennone.”

Putting Space TogetherAccordingtoVerbdirectorMargaretCarlson,ChristChurchprovidedaperfectfitforthecompany’suniquedemands.InChristChurch,Verbfoundspaceforrehearsals,storageandoffices,whilemaintainingaconvenientlocationonlyashortridefromI-480andI-271.WithhalfofthecompanylivinginAkron,easyhighwayaccessisahugeimprove-mentoverVerb’spreviouslocationindowntownCleveland,whereemployeesweresubjectedtotrafficjamsandhighpricesforparking.
Alltold,Verb’sfive-yearleasewithChristChurchprovidesthecompanywithtwostoragerooms,fiveoffices(whichVerbusesfordressingrooms,aconferenceroomandtheirownadministrativeoffices)andhalfofthechurch’sextensiveparishhall,nowoutfittedwithextralighting,aportablewallofmirrorsandaspecialraised,paddedfloortoserveasVerb’sdancestudio.Carlsonisclearlystillthrilledtohavefoundsuchanidealspaceforhercom-pany,expressinggratitudethatVerbdidnotneedtoresorttoanemptycardealershiporbowlingalleyasotherstressedballettroupeshave.
ForChristChurch,thesharedarrangementhasalreadyproducednumerousbenefits,bothexpectedandunexpected.Atthemostbasiclevel,therentfromUnityofGreaterClevelandandVerbBalletsofcourseprovidesChristChurchwithacertainamountoffinancialrelief,allowingthechurchtocovertheirannualoperatingcostswithout
dippingasfarintotheirendow-ment.Buttheprofitspreadsfurtherthanfinances;forinstance,ChristChurch’sParishAdministratorDon-aldJacksonexpressedgratitudeforRudiBarnes’presenceintheparishoffice:“Wedokeepthedoorslockedbecausethebuilding’ssobig.Peoplecanwanderinandwe’vehadthingsstolen,sonowthere’sanotherpersonhereMondaythroughFridaytohelpanswerthedoor.”
Also,ChristChurchhopestogainfromthein-creasedvisibilitygrantedbyanex-pandedselectionofpeoplevisit-ingthebuild-ing.VerbBalletsusesitsstudioforclassesinclassicalballetandmoderndanceinadditiontorehearsals,aventurethatissuretodrawmoreoutsideattentiontoChristChurchasstudentspassthrough.Thedancecompanyhasalsohostedafundrais-erinsidethebuilding,andproposedaplantoperformselectionsfromtheirnewseasonatSundayliturgies.Faasswasthrilledbytheprospectofsuchanoffering,whichwouldmostlikelyincludeaVerbpiecebasedonthehistoryoftheShakers,thereligiouscommunitythatoriginallysettledShakerHeights:“That’sthekindofrelationshipthatIwashopingtodevelopwith[Verb],nottojusthavethemasatenant.Thatkindofinterweavingoftopicsandtheologyanddanceandart,Iamjustsoexcitedbythat.”
Butperhapsthegreatestgiftofallhasbeentheopportunityfor
ChristChurchtolookbeyondtheirownwalls(sotospeak).“Wearenotaninward-lookingcongregation,weareanoutward-lookingoneinev-erythingthatwedo,inouroutreachandhowweservethecommunity,”
continuesFaass.ChristChurchandUnityhavenowjoinedtogetheronseveraloutreachprojects,includ-inggatheringEasterbasketsforchildrenthroughtheNewLifeCommunityandInterfaithHos-pitalityNet-workofGreaterCleveland(sincemergedtoformFamilyPromiseofGreaterCleve-land).Bothsideshopetoexplore
furtherareaswherethetwocongre-gationscanjoininmutualministry.
ThegraceandunderstandingwithwhichChristChurchhasacceptedtheirnewcircumstancesshouldserveasaninspirationtotheDiocesanandgreaterEpiscopalcommunitiesasawhole.Conclud-ing,Faasswaseagertopraisehisparishionersforthesmoothtransi-tion:“Becausethiswasallhappen-ingaroundChristmastime,IkeptusingtheJosephandMarystoryofnoroomattheinn,andthatitisourcallasChristianstoprovidespaceforpeoplewhoarehome-less,literally.AndIthinkitshowsthatwearewillingtogiveupsomeofourbestspace,tobesacrificialinthatway,tomeettheneedsofsomeonewhowaswithoutaplacetostay.Ithinkthat’sbeentheHolySpiritatwork.”

Vergers Coming to the Diocese of Ohio

Manydevotedlaypeoplewrestlewithacalltotheordainedministry,andevenforsomeofthosewhodofeelcalled,thispath
mayfailtomeshwithothercallsandobligations.Butapersondoesnotneedtobeapriesttoperformsignificantservicetothechurchanditsworship.Onealternativeistobecomeaverger.
AlthoughvergersarearatherrecentinnovationinAmerica,thepositionofvergergoesbackintoEnglishhistorynearly700hundredyearstothe12thcentury.Itisrelatedtotheminorordersofacolyteorporter,andhasbeencomparedtotheroleofbutlerinthehouseofGod.Inmodernterms,thevergerperformstheroleofstagemanager,supervisingeveryaspectoftheworshipservicethatdoesn’trequirepersonalsupervisionofclergy.Historically,vergershavemaintainedthechurchbuild-ingwithitsfurnishingsandledtheliturgy,butuntilSeptember1988,theChurchofEnglandVergers’Guildwastheonlyorganizationbringingvergerstogether.ThenJohnCampbell,theGeneralSecretaryoftheChurchofEnglandVergers’Guild,cametoMiamitoattendtheinstallationoffivenewvergersontheinvitationofTrin-ityCathedral,Miami,andtodiscussthedevelopmentofanewAmericanorganizationofVergers.Inquiresfromclergyandinterestedlayministersflewin.Today,theUnitedStatescanboast15to20paid,full-timevergersandalmostathousandpart-timevolunteervergers.
Duties Range WidelyVerginghasgrownanddevelopedbeyondthedayswhenvergersusedtheirvirge(aceremonialstaff,traditionallymadeofwood)tobeataclearpathtothechurchforthethurifer,crucifer,acolytes,choir,andpriests.Todayvergersdutiesaredeterminedbyclergyandmayincludeassigning,training,andcheckinginlectors,chalicebearers,acolytes,andprayerintercessors.ThevergermightbecalledupontocoordinatewiththeAltarGuild,FuneralGuild,andserveasWeddingCoordinators.Theymakecertainthatany-thingthatisneededduringaservice—likewine,wafers,andcandles—arekeptingoodsupply.Theymayevenbecalledupontomakethechrismoiltobeusedatbaptism.
Mostoftheireffortsgointoplanningofservicesandseeingtoitthattheworshipservicegoessmoothly.This
includesthecareandmaintenanceofclergyvestments,andhelpingtheirownandvisitingclergytovest.
Mostparisheshavevolunteersalreadytakingonthesechores,andclergymightaskwhytheyshouldconsiderestablishingthosemembersofficiallyasvergers.BeingmembersoftheVerger’sGuildofTheEpiscopalChurchdignifiesthesevolunteers’efforts.TheGuildoffersacomprehensivetrainingcoursecalledA Course of Train-ing for a Vergerthattakesanywherefrom8to15monthstocompleteandoffersaCertificateofCompletionandanofficialguildvirgetograduates.GraduatesbecomeFellowsintheVergers’GuildofTheEpiscopalChurch,confidentlyabletosupporttheworshipoftheirparishasprescribedbytheirrector.Registrationandtraininginformationmaybefoundonlineatwww.vergers.org.

Ecumenical Picnic for All Comers

EveryMondaynightatSt.James,Painesville,thephrase“churchpicnic”takesonanewmeaning.TheparishindowntownPainesville
feedsasmanyas90needypeopleinitsparkinglotorattablessetuponitslawn.
Thefeedingprogram,calledKarpos,whichisGreekfor“fruitofyourlabor,”isauniquepartnershipofSt.JamesandtwoCatholicchurches,St.Mary’sinPaines-villeandSt.Gabriel’sinConcordTownship,tofeedhungryandhomelesspeoplethreeweekdaynightseachweek.Butitsrealfruitistherelation-shipsthathavegrown.
Working Outside“We’reoutsidetogethersowegetanunderstandingofwhatitisliketobehomeless,”saidBobbieNolan,whocoordinatesSt.James’efforts.“Partofthisprogramissocializingwiththepeople,talkingtothem,andlearningwhotheyare.Someofthemhaven’ttalkedtoanyoneallday.Andthisisasafeenvironment.”
St.JameshasbeenfeedingthehomelessforyearswithitslunchprogramonSaturdaysandSundays.ItbeganreachingouttothehomelessinadifferentwayinApril2010.
Beingoutsidemakesabigdiffer-ence.GraciaMorton,whohadworkedwiththelunchprogramfor15yearsandnowhelpsNolanwiththeeveningmealcoordination,saidthatwiththeKarposprogram,“inthewinter,evenonthehorribledays,weareserving.Thehomelessareoutsideeitherway,”Mortonsaid.
“Iwasn’tconvinced[ofitsusefulness]whenwefirststarted.Ididn’tgetit,”Mortonsaid.Butshehadanepiph-anyattheendofAugustwhenshewitnessedonevolun-teer,whowashappytoservebutdidnotinteractwiththepeople,makeaconnectionwithtwomen,onewhoneededworkdoneonhishomeandtheotherwhoneededwork.Themenandthevolunteerhavebecomefriends.
“IthinktheLordsenteachvolunteertobeagifttoeachofthosepeople[atthetable].”
KarposwasdevelopedatSt.Mary’sbyKathyPhillipsandGreggStovcek,ayoungseminarian.TheymetwiththehomelesswhosaidthatsomekindofeveningmealwouldbebeneficialandsuggestedSt.Jamesasthesitebe-causetheywereusedtogoingthereforthelunchprogram.
St.Mary’sbegantheprograminthefallof2009,travelingaroundthecitytoservethemeal.TheyservedfromthesidewalkatSt.James,nearthejail,nearthebus
shelteranddownbytheGrandRiver.Atthebeginningof2010,Phillips
andStovcekaskedSt.Jamesiftheparishwouldbeinterestedinpartici-patinginthemeal.
TheRev.VanessaClark,rectorofSt.James,saidthatduringthemeetingwiththeCatholiccoordinators,whentheprogramwasdescribed,“theHolySpiritblewintotheroom.”Clarktooktheideatotheoutreachcommittee.
InApril2010,aSt.JamesgroupattendedaWednesdaynightmealandlatertheparishcommittedtodoingitforayear.St.Jameshasabigroomatthechurchthatissuitableforservingameal,butdecidedtoservethemealoutside.“Thesharedexperiencehasin-creasedthetrust,[amongpeople]”saidMorton.Somehow,whenthemealisservedinside,thepeopleperceiveditasmorecondescending,sheexplained.
Success StoriesNolansaid,“Wehavehadsomesuccessstories.Wehavehadthreehomelessmen,onewhowaslivinginabarn,whohavesincefoundhousing.”Thechurchhassteppedintohelpthem,providingthingslikefurnitureoraTV.
OnemanwasverygratefulwhenNolanboughthimabucket,amop,aspongeandsomecleaningproductsafterhegothousing.
“Whenyouhaveahome,youdon’tthinkaboutnothavingabroomorasponge.Someofthesemenhavebeen

Hesetsuptables,andonetimeheofferedtheprayerbeforethemeal.Thechurchseesthemealasanevan-gelisticopportu-nity,butdoesnotforcetheGospeluponthepeople.
“Prayerisof-tenofferedbeforeweserve,butyoudonothavetoparticipateintheprayerorBiblestudyoranythinglikethatinordertogetameal.Anyoneandeveryonewhoneedsamealisfed,”saidNolan.“Inindividualcon-versations,peoplewillshareabouttheLordortheBible.”
St.JamescooksandservesthemealonMondays.OnTuesdays,St.Gabriel’svolunteerscookandserveatSt.James.OnWednesdays,St.Mary’sgroupcooksatitschurchthatisablockawayandthenservesatSt.James.
“Thispartnershiphasoccurredveryorganically,”Mortonsaid.“ItisgoodforthecityofPainesvilleandverygroundbreaking.TheCatholicshavehugeresources.Theschoolsandyouthgroupshavehelpedout.”Theyalsohavealotoftransientvolunteers.
Servingbeginsat5p.m.andusu-allylaststo5:45p.m.or6p.m.Somepeoplearecleaningupastheyworksothegroupisusuallydoneby6p.m.
InApril2010,theprogrambeganbyfeeding35to40people.Overthesummer,itgrewto80to85.Dur-ingthewinter,itslowedto50to65.ThenthisApril,thenumberbeing
servedhasswelledto85to90.
No One Turned Away“InthesecondweekofApril,weexpected65and92peopleshowedup,”Nolansaid.“Ihadtogobackinsideandcooksomemorebecausewewon’tturnanyoneaway.”Nolansaidthatsomeofthepeopletoldhertheywerecomingbecausetheirfoodstampaidhadbeencutback.
TenvolunteersfromSt.Jamesusuallyhelpout.Somecomejusttocookandworkonitforanhouroranhourandahalf.Otherstakeofffromtheirjobsandcomeat4to
4:30p.m.andhelpserveorcleanup.Someworkthewholeday.
Tablesaresetupoutsidethechurchandthemealsareofferedbuffet-style.Inthesummer,tablesaresetupinthegrassforpeopletositandeat.“Inthesummer,it’slikeachurchpicniceveryday,”Nolansaid.

ClarkhasseentwotangiblefruitsoftheKarposprogramintheparishlife.“Ihaveseenasignificantde-creaseintheabuseoftheproperty,”shesaid.St.JamesisindowntownPainesvilleandhasshelteredareassoithassomecampers,butnowthereislesstrashleftbehind.“Westillhavecampers,butthereisagreaterrespectfortheproperty.”
Amongpeoplewhovolunteer,thereisanewkindoflightandener-gy.Threehouseholdswhohavecome
tothechurchhavestayedbecauseofthemissionofKarpos,Clarksaid.
“Wealsohaveaclearervoice[inidentifyingourselves]asafeedingchurch.Ineverwanttodownplayhowimportantourlunchprogramis,butinthisprogram,wehavebeenabletobuildrelationshipsbybreak-ingbreadtogether.”
Insteadof“us”and“them,”Clarksaid,“itisustheparishandusthepeopleweserve.”Karposhasenabledtheparishto“livemoredeeplyinwhattheSpiritiscallingustobe.”
Thereisapeculiararchitecturalde-tailofSt.James.Thechurchwasbuiltin1866andwhentheparishionersaddedakitcheninthebasement,theydecidedthebestaccessforitwouldbedirectlyunderthesanctuary.
“SothatwhenIamstandingatthealtarduringCommunionask-ingthatChristbecomephysicallypresent,directlyundermepeoplearepreparingfoodforthehomeless,”Clarksaid.“ThisisinourDNA.”
ShebelievesSt.Jameshasaspecialcallingforhelpingtheneedy.“Wetreatyouasahumanbeing,”Clarksaid.“Youarenotahome-lessperson,youareapersonwhodoesn’thaveahome.”
Foodcomesstrictlyfromdona-tions.OnMonday,Nolanoftenusesleftoversfromthelunchprogram.Andpeoplewilldonatefoodleftoverfrompartiesandweddings.TheMa-sonicTemplehasgivendonations.

LakeCountyoffersmanyresourcesforpeopletofindhousing,andSt.Jameswilltrytodirectpeopletotheap-propriateagency,Mortonsaid.
OnememberwhohasfeltthatcalloftheHolySpirittohelpthehomelessis90-year-oldEvelynWerbeach,whoisalifetimememberofSt.James.Shegoesev-eryMondayat3:30p.m.andstaysuntil6,helpinginthekitchen.Evenwhentherewerewinterstorms,sheshoweduptovolunteer.
“Thelinesjustkeepgettinglonger,”Werbeachsaid.“It’ssosadthatpeoplecan’tprovidefoodoracoatfortheirchildren.”

TheDioceseofOhioiscosponsoringwiththeDioceseofSouthernOhioafreshexpressionsmissioninitiativetoencour-
agenewformsofChristiancommunitiesengagingyoungadultsandothernewaudiences.Aspartofthisexploration,theyhaveaskedEpiscopalVillageandtheRev.KarenWard,founderofChurchoftheApostlesinSeattletohostaconferenceSeptember30toOctober1thatwillprovidepractitionerledtrainingandusefulresourcesforproclaimingthegoodnewstoanewgeneration,reachingyouthandyoungadults,providingleadershipinmission,andtoolsforemergentworship,music,andliturgywithinapostmodernsetting.
EpiscopalVillageconferencesareuniquegather-ingsforyoungadultsandfreshexpressionspractitio-nerstobuildcommunity,shareideasandresourcesanddreamaboutanewkindofchurch.Thisconfer-enceshouldoffermembersofestablishedcongrega-tionshopeforthefutureofthechurchandbeacatalystforchangewithpracticalideasabouthowtheymightexperimentwithemergentpracticesandgrowtheircongregations.

The Spirit Blows in With the Maundy Thursday Service

Thenoisewassteady,astrongundercurrent.Theroomwasovercrowded.Peopleflowedinandoutinastreamofcontrolledchaos.
Itwasn’tyourtypicalMaundyThursdayservice,aservicenormallycallingforsolemnreflection.ButtheMaundyThursdayserviceandmealintheUndercroft,orbasement,atChurchoftheRedeemerinLorainwasanexperiencetheparishionerswon’tsoonforget.Infact,itmaywellhavechangedthechurchforever.
Andthepivotalmomentoftheeveningmaybeat-tributedtooneoftheevening’ssmallestandhumblestparticipants.Itoccurredduringthefootwashing,whenalittleblonde3-year-old,dressedinapurplejoggingsuit,cameforwardwithhermothertohavehertinyfeetwashed.
ForBobWood,avestrymem-berinchargeofthefootwashingceremonywhoseburlystaturecon-trastedsharplywiththatofthelittlegirl,itwasthemomentthat“tookmyheartthemost.”
WhenAnneYugandtheRev.MaryCarson,Redeemer’srector,beganplanningtheserviceweeksbefore,theyhadnoideahowtheeveningwouldgoandcertainlyhadnoideaofitsramifications.
Forthepast10yearsorso,Yughasbeencoordinat-ingtheChaburahmealfortheparish.AChaburaisbasicallyaSedermealwithaserviceincorporated.YugpreparedlambandcoursesofMiddleEasternfoodforanelegantmealandservice.Thisyear,itwasdecidedthattheMaundyThursdayservicewouldbecom-binedwiththecommunitymealoftheparishbecauseMaundyThursdaywouldfallonthethirdThursdayofthemonthandthatisthesamedayasoneofthecom-munitymeals,normallyservedonthethirdandfifthThursdaysofeverymonth.
Yugplannedthemenu,choosingchickenbecauseshealreadyhadsomeinthefreezer.Carsonplannedhowtheservicewouldproceed.
OnPalmSunday,SallyCookandtheyouthgroup
preparedEasterbagsforallofthegueststhatincludedchocolatecandy.Yug,JaneWoodandMargeDaviesbegancookingthemealonWednesday.SylviaSholledecoratedthetables.
“Twomealsinadvanceoftheservice,webegantellingpeopletheywouldhaveaservicealongwiththeregularmonthlyThursdaynightmeal.Wewerehopingfor80to90people,whichwasanormalnight,”Yugsaid.
Instead,143attended.“Alotofregularsdidn’tattend,”Yugsaid.“Someof
themattendtheirownchurches.Wegotalotofnewpeoplebecausetheyknewwhatweweredoing.”
They Just Kept Coming“Wewereshockedbythenum-berwhoshowedup,”Woodsaid.“Wejustlovedthefactthatwewerethereforthem.Theyweremorethanawarethatwewerego-ingtobedoingtheservice.”
WoodandGeorgeSisswerethemaitred’s,whowereinchargeofgettingeveryoneseatedinanorderlyfashion.“Whenpeoplestartedcom-ingin,itgottothepointthatparish-ionersgotupandgavetheirseatsto
theguests,”saidWood.“Alloftheguestswerefed,”Yugsaid,
“butsomeoftheparishionerswentwithoutsothattherewouldbeplentyfortheguests.”
Whilefoodcourseswerebeingserved,JimKulma,thechaplainoftheLutheranHomeinWestlakeandaBiblestoryteller,presentedtheMaundyThursdaylessons.
“Ican’tsayitwasn’twithoutchaos—therewerepeoplegoinginandoutduringtheservice,”Woodsaid.
Thenduringdessert,Woodpreparedforthefootwashing.Thedinnertableshadbeenarrangedinasquareandthefootwashingwastooccurinthecenter.Woodoriginallyplannedforsixparishionersandsixgueststoparticipateinthesymbolicceremony.
“Oneofthemencameupandsaid,‘Ifyouwashmyfeet,Ihavetowashyours,’”Woodsaid.“Iwasfinewiththat.”Thenthemothercameforthwithher

CarsonledtheEucharistinthecenterofthetables,andthepartici-pantscameupintworowsandre-ceivedwinefromtwochalicebearers.
AftertheCommunion,“ayoungmotherwithayoungdaughter—2yearsold—askedmeifshecouldbeblessed,”Carsonsaid.“Weendedupwithalonglineofmothersbringingtheirchildrentobeblessed.”
Presenting the WordCarsonsaid,“IthinktheresponsetothefootwashingandtheCom-munionwasbecauseofthewaytheWordwaspresented.”Kulma’spresentationofferedthelessonsinamuchmorevibrantwaythanjustreadingthem.
“Itwasamazingtoseetheengage-mentofeverybodywhowasthere,”Carsonsaid.“InmyEastersermon,Italkedabouthowthepeoplewerejustbeaming.”
Aftertheservice,peopleshowedgreatenthusiasmandinterestincarry-ingthespiritoftheeveningforward.
Yughadsomedefiniteideasinthatdirection.
“Iwouldliketoallow(thepeoplewhocometothecommunitymeal)tocreatetheirownservicewithintheboundsoftheEpiscopalChurch,”shesaid.Theparishionersaretalkingaboutplanningamonth-lyservicethatwouldbeincorpo-ratedinthecommunitymeal.Yugsuggestedthatthemealbeginat6p.m.andthatsomekindofEucha-ristbeofferedat6:45.
YugsaidtheMaundyThursdayserviceofferedspecialhealingandanewpurposeforChurchofthe
Redeemer.Thechurchhasbeentornbyconflictandtheparish’snumbershadbeendwindling.“Weweregoingdownhill,”shesaid.BecauseoftheMaundyThursdayservice,“Wewentfromtotallydepressedtoextremelyex-cited.It’sturnedcompletelyaround.We’resmallbutwe’remighty.”
Woodagreed,sayingthatthecommunitymealhashadabigim-pactonhispersonalfaithwalk.HeandhiswifehavebeenmembersatRedeemerfor30yearsbutattendedirregularly.Throughthecommunitymeal,hehasbecomeinvolvedintheparishtosuchanextentthatheisnowamemberofthevestry.
Lifting Our Spirits“Ayearago,Icouldnothaveimag-inedRedeemerdoingthis,”Woodsaid.“Thecommunitymealhasliftedthespiritsofourcongrega-tion.Itshowsuswehaveabrighterfuture.Ifinditwaswhatwewereputheretodo.”
Carsonhadthesameassessment.Shecametothechurchin2009aspart-timeinterimrector.“ThiscouldnothavehappenedwhenIcamehereinDecember2009,”shesaid.
“Igetnocreditwhatsoeverforwhattheyhavedone.Ijustsatbackandcheered.Toooftentheclergygetscreditforwhatthepeoplehavedone.Thistrulyissomethingtheyhavedoneontheirown,”shesaid.
Moregoodthingslieaheadfor
Redeemerthroughitscommunitymeal.Recently,thechurchcon-nectedwiththeLorainPrideTeam,whichhasreceivedafederalgranttoprovidehealthscreeningstothecom-munity.Twonurseshavecometothecommunitymealtogivebloodpres-surescreeningsandprovidehealthcarereferrals.
Carsonsaid,“Itwasanaturalop-portunitytohookupwiththem.Atthelastmeal,thenurseswerebusyforacoupleofhoursstraight.Thatwassomethingwehadhopedtoadd.”
Theparishisconsideringoffer-ingChristianeducationtothedozenorsochildrenwhoarenowcomingtothecommunitymeal.CarsonsaidtheyarelookingatGodlyPlay,whichinvolvesMontessori-typepre-sentationofBiblestories.
“Thisisatrueevangelismop-portunityandthereisenthusiasmamongpeoplewhohavenotreallybeeninvolvedinthechurchbefore,”shecontinued.
“Wehaveagoodreputationfortreatingguestswellandwithgrace.”

SummerisatimeoftransitionformanyofusandfortheECWit’stheendofourprogramyearandthebeginningofmytermaspresidentofyourorganiza-tion.The2010–2011yearhasbeenoneoflearningandpositivemovement.MembersoftheboardhavevisitedsomeofthemoreextendedMissionAreasinourdiocese.Thesechurchesfacespecialchallenges,andwewereabletolearnfirsthandhowhardpeopleareworkingtomeettheirspecificneeds.Aswemoveintoanewprogramyearandanewboard,weintendthatourforwardmomentumwillcontinuetothebenefitofallmembersoftheEpisco-palDioceseofOhio.
Aspresident,IknowthatIfollowinthefootstepsofmanyfinewomenwhohaveworkedhardtokeepthisorganizationrelevant.Inassumingthisrole,I’mfortu-natetohavetheexperiencesofseveralpastpresidentsandboardmemberstohelpmecontinuetheirlegacybutweonlyleavealegacyifwecontinuetomoveforward.
Annual Meeting The134thAnnualMeetingwasheldonApril29and
30andhostedbytheCuyahogaMissionArea.Attendanceexceededexpectationsandfilledtheavailablespace.Weex-tendoursincerethankstoBishopandMrs.HollingsworthandtheirfamilyforhostingourFridayeveningreceptionattheirhome.Theymadeusfeelmostwelcomeandfeduswell,livinguptoalong-standingEpiscopaltradition.Theafter-dinnerentertainmentwasaplayreadingbymembersoftheboardofYet we Persist,ahistoryoftheECW.Judg-ingbythelaughterandapplause,itwasahit.
Saturdaymorningsawover100peopleattendingtheprogram,whichbeganwithabusinessmeetingthatincludedtheelectionofofficerswhoare:

The Bible Studygroupwasinsomewaysafollow-uponlastyear’sprogramwithalltheattendeesparticipatinginalivelydiscussionaboutthewidevarietyofmaterialthey’dusedduringthepastyear.Itrangedfromthemoreformalprayer-basedprogramssuchasUnbinding your Heartthroughthefaith-basednovel,Putting Away Child-ish ThingsbyMarcusJ.BorgtotheBad Girls of the Bible seriesbyLizCurtisHiggs.
The Little Dresses for Haitigroupwas,withoutadoubt,thenoisiestone.Notonlyweretherequiteafewwomen,butsewingmachinespurredawayastheymadedressestosendtoHaiti.Formanyofthemitwastheirfirstattempt,sotheywentfromcuttingoutthedressto,insomecases,completion:Anewskilltotakebacktotheirparishes.
The Los Amigos Episcopalesworkshopbroughtattendeesuptodateontheongoingactivitiesofthisoutreachprogram,muchofwhichwascoveredindepthinthelasteditionofChurchLife.
The United Thank Offeringattendeeslearnedabouttheprocessofrequestinggrantfunds,andheldageneraldiscussiononideasforpromotingtheprograminparishes.
The Sharing Outreachgroupwastoldthat“Outreachispeopleengagedinhandsonwork—NOTjustwritingchecks.Ithasevolvedfrom“weknowbest”to“theyknow

Severalchurcheshavecommuni-ty gardens,amongthemSt.Thomas,Berea;ChristChurch,ShakerHeights;andTrinityCathedral.TheCathedralhasalsodevelopedaBack Pack Ministry:fillingbackpackswithfoodforchildrenofanearbypublicschooltoeatovertheweek-ends,asmanyofthosewhoeattwomealsadayatschooldon’thavethesameluxuryathome.
Trinity,NewPhiladelphia,houses the homelessinthechurch’sunder-croft.St.Paul’s,Mt.Vernon,beganamen’s shelter and Sun-day supper.St.Paul’s,ClevelandHeights,hostsanArmed Forces Outreach Group,whichministerstothefamiliesofservicemenandwomenfromtheparish,inadditiontosendingcarepackagestothoseservingintheArmedForces.
AttendeeswereshowntheArmedForcesprayerbook,anEpiscopalChurchmedal,andotheritemsthatcanbeorderedfromTheEpiscopalChurchheadquarters.
Anumberofchurchessupportlo-calschools,providingtutors,aswellasmonetaryassistance.
The VillageisanintegralpartoftheNewMemberMinistryatSt.Paul’s,ClevelandHeights.Itbegantherein2005andhasgrownfromfivefamiliestomorethan50.Itwasdesignedtohelpnewmemberswith
youngchildrenfeelwelcomeandintegratedintothelifeoftheparish.
Thisfellowship-basedgrouppro-videsaninformalsettingforthefam-iliestogettoknoweachotherduringamonthlypotluck.Theimmediaterewardinalargeparishisthejoyofseeingfamiliarfaceswheninvolvedinchurchactivitiesoreveninthewidercommunity.TheprogramhasbecomethebasisforotherprogramsincludingThe Town,whichisfornewcomerswitholderchildren.
Children’s Program:EightyoungpeopleattendedtheAnnualMeetinganddemonstratedtheirartisticabilitiesbyagainmakingcardsforthechildrenattheLillianVallelySchoolinBlackfoot,Idaho.Anewventurethisyearwasashortplay,withcostumes,basedonthestoryofJoseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
