PASTORAL POST Prayer
Faithful God, who love us in Christ Jesus,
send your Spirit of truth to dwell within us,
that we may always reject what is false,
live by the commands of Christ,
and be true to the love you have shown us. AMEN.
Gospel
A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to John.
Jesus said to his disciples: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always, the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept, because it neither sees nor knows him. But
you know him, because he remains with you, and will be in you.
I will not leave you orphans; I will come to you. In a little while the world will no longer see me, but you will see me, because I live and you will live. On that day you will realize
that I am in my Father and you are in me and I in you.
Whoever has my commandments and observes them is the one who loves me. And
whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and reveal myself to
him.”
The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord, Jesus Christ.
The Ohio Bishops have granted churches permission to open for public masses
starting Pentecost weekend, May 30-31. Available seating will be limited as we ob-
serve social distancing. Fr. Tony has added Eucharistic Adoration after the 11am
Sunday mass, until 3pm, for those uncomfortable attending mass to pray and wor-
ship on their own. Additional details on specific policies and procedures for before
and after mass are forthcoming.
Please continue to make time to worship at home, and stay connected with St.
Matthias on Facebook.

Private Masses are a part of the Catholic
tradition, especially before Vatican II. Mass intentions will be honored because the spiritu-al benefits of the Mass are not dependent on
attendance.

PRAY FOR FINANCE COUNCIL
Please pray for the members of our Fi-nance Council, as we try to navigate
through these uncertain financial times and prepare for the next fiscal year.
UPDATING PARISH RECORDS
We have begun to cleanup and correct our
parish records, especially our list of active, registered parishioners. This is the official list that the diocese uses to evaluate the
size of parishes, and set financial goals for the Bishop’s Annual Appeal. In the coming weeks, you may receive a request to up-
date your contact information, and/or veri-fy that you wish to remain an active, regis-tered parishioner at St. Matthias.
CORONAVIRUS AID
Through a generous grant from The Cath-olic Foundation, we have been able to pro-vide financial assistance to several families
in our parish who found themselves with-out work and ineligible for other types of aid. We are very thankful to The Catholic
Foundation for their support!
PHONE SYSTEM
We have been working on a contract for a new phone system for several months. Unfortunately, updating the phone system
required a lot of maintenance and review of our infrastructure, which was not in great shape. The entire parish office phone
system (incoming calls, outgoing calls, and voicemail) failed completely at the end of April. Please contact us via email
([email protected]) or leave urgent messages on the school phone (268-3030).
WEEKLY COLLECTION
Thank you to everyone who has continued to support our parish during this time of no public mass. We have been collecting
about half of our budgeted offertory amount, which is good given the circum-stances! Please consider mailing your offer-ing to St. Matthias, or keeping all your en-
velopes and offerings together for deposit once masses resume. We want to continue to pay all our employees as long as possi-
ble, and continue to support our monthly charities.
Commandments and Love
6th Sunday in Easter (Year A)
May 17, 2020
Fr. Tony Davis
Today’s Gospel brings together two aspects of Christian living that are hard to
reconcile: commandments and love. Some Christians put the emphasis on the
commandments. To be a good Christian means to follow God’s commandments whether one feels like it or not. It is our duty and there is no room for compro-
mise. Some, on the other hand, put the emphasis on love. They say that the com-
mandments are outdated. If one has love, one can justify all their actions to them-
selves. While both sides have a case to make, Jesus says, “if you love me, you will keep my commandments…whoever has my commandments and observes them is
the one who loves me.” According to Jesus, commandments and love should go
together. A few verses later, he will make the strongest statement of all, ‘this I
command you: love one another.’
Fr. Nicholas Lohkamp, in his book The Commandments and the New Morality,
wrote favorably of the developments in moral theology in the last 50 years. He was glad to see the Church move beyond a rigid ‘thou shalt not’ mentality. In his
‘Introduction,’ he writes, “we worried about the laws that were to promote and
protect values more than we did about the values themselves.” (viii) Implied in this comment is a clear criticism of those who focused too much on the letter of the
law and left little room for love. They made the commandments the end-all-be-all.
But also implied in his comment is actually an affirmation of laws and command-
ments. The commandments are there to promote and protect values. Because of this, we must be very careful not to come across as dismissing commandments
altogether. To dismiss commandments can be to dismiss values.
To believe that our values will naturally be respected and encouraged without any kind of structure or support is wishful thinking. Human nature isn’t always that
purely motivated. The commandments, therefore, serve as a necessary kind of
boundary. From the outside looking in, boundaries can appear restrictive. From the inside, however, we see that they serve a larger purpose. For example, the
commandment against bearing false witness is protecting the value of truth-telling,
the commandment against killing is protecting the value of human dignity, and the
commandments against coveting are protecting the value of gratitude. Without the
commandments, these values would deteriorate in time.
As we strive to appreciate the commandments, it is helpful to remember that not every commandment carries the same weight. The Old Testament is full of hun-
dreds of commandments from God, yet we only singled out 10 of them. The pur-
pose is not so much to explain and defend every commandment or try to account
for every situation. The commandments are there to give us a feel of how to pro-
tect and promote the values that are important to us.
One can both follow the commandments and love at the same time.
Perhaps we have been approaching the discussion on reconciling commandments and love in the wrong way. Some people will naturally like the commandments and
some people will naturally like love. Maybe a better approach would be to ask this:
what are the values that we are trying to protect and promote?
