This article is a reprint of the Pastor’s article from the August 2014 newsletter.
Currently there is a movie running with the title: America. The basic question it raises is ‘what would the world be like without America?’ It is a controversial movie, for sure. But I like the question transposed upon Bethlehem UMC. What would Davie County be like without Bethlehem? Bethlehem is the church where Hope Homes was born. Dennis Marshall, the pastor of Bethlehem 2006-09, challenged the church to build a home for a woman he had met who lived in her truck. Since that time, Bethlehem has led many churches in Davie County to build fourteen (14) homes for families who would never be able to own a home in any other way. Imagine Davie County without those fourteen homes. Beyond that, imagine Davie County without a church willing to take the lead on such a fundamental issue as shelter for human beings. Marie Collins is the Director of Storehouse for Jesus. Storehouse is a ministry that provides food, clothing, medicine and medical care to people of Davie County living through a very difficult time. Ms. Collins recently shared how crucial Beth-lehem is to that overall task. Imagine Davie County without Storehouse. Imagine Storehouse without Bethlehem. These are things – and there are many others – (Bible Club at Farmington Heights, Book Bags of Hope for hungry kids) that make Bethlehem a crucial link in what God is doing in the world. If that is so, then helping Bethlehem to thrive is worthy of the best God has put within us. Of course, we all have differ-ing gifts and interests. One is interested in studying a book with a small group. Another likes to spend time in prayer with oth-ers. Others seem to live to practice missions in the world. What-ever our gifts and interests, when we work to practice them consistently, we find ourselves functioning within the larger

purposes of God’s redemption of the world. Then God’s pur-poses for the world and God’s purposes for us become one. Nothing is as exhilarating and fulfilling as being in the center of God’s will for the world! Our willingness to spend two weekends in a retreat set-ting during the last year is a big sign that many are willing to do what God desires us to do to become even more fruitful as a congregation. I have personally met with the leaders of individ-ual ministries and missions in our church this summer. You should be glad to know that each of them are very committed to serving Christ and helping Bethlehem to thrive in the future. We live in and practice ministry in a very complicated world. The days are gone forever (and ever) where one person can sit on top of a pyramid and direct people like bees in a hive to do what is best for the “colony.” Our servants know that. So pray for the church and those who are helping us find God’s dream for us. What would Davie County be like without Bethlehem? What would Bethlehem be like without you? “We are here to ignite the light of Christ! We exist to be and make disciples so that we will transform our community and world for Christ.” Pastor Barry July 15, 2014

THANK YOU
I want to thank everyone for all the prayers, cards and also the beautiful red rose I get every time I’m in the hospital. It seems like I go 1 step forward and 2 steps back. Things are getting better so I hope I can make it back to church soon. Thanks again and may God bless everyone, Rita Rohde
Church Family, Thank you so much for all the food. We enjoyed it so much. Also thank you for the flower and your prayers. God Bless You, Smith Jones and Andy, Marsha & Justin
To the Bethlehem Church Family, Leta would like to thank everyone for the flowers and cards that she received while she was in the hospital at the beach. She is now staying at Tricia or Deb’s house for a little while and loves visitors. Recovery is slow but everyday gets a little bet-ter. We would like to thank everyone for the prayers for they do mean a lot. We would like to thank the builders for a wonderful ramp to help her get in and out of her house, but right now she still can’t go home. Keep her in your prayers. The food that the lovely ladies prepared for us was real good and she ate good that night. All we ask for is your prayers and thank each of you for all you have done. Leta Ellis and family
CELL PHONE DONATIONS… Do you have old, unused cell phones lying around the house? Put them to good use by donating them to Davie Domestic Violence Services and Rape Crisis Center. Donated phones are either refurbished for reim-bursement for client services or reactivated for client use. Safety is a key issue for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault; a cell phone activated with 911 telephone service can be extremely necessary and even life-saving. Please place your old cell phones (with charger if you have it) in the designated box in the Missions Room. For questions, please contact Vir-ginia Burnette (409-8721).

Book Bags of Hope This school year Bethlehem is partnering with Smith Grove
UMC on the Book Bags of Hope project for Pinebrook Elementary. This project donates a bag of food every Friday to a child for the weekend. These children would normally have very little, or no food to eat on the weekend. There are about 82 bags given out each Friday. All foods are individually wrapped, single servings, and require minimal cooking.
Please help us by donating food to this worthy cause. Some food items are alternated throughout the year, but the items on this list are collected all year long. Purchase items on the list below, and donate items in the boxes provided around the church (Missions Room, FLC and CAC).

PRESCHOOL CONTINUED MISSIONS MOMENT CONTINUED
Well, I don't know about you But I'm sick and tired of life with no desire
I don't want a flame, I want a fire I wanna be the one who stands up and says,
I'm gonna do something!"
We are the salt of the earth
We are a city on a hill But we're never gonna change the world
By standing still No we won't stand still No we won't stand still
No we won't stand still!!"
-Mattthew West, "Do Something" lyrics
MISSIONS MOMENT
"I woke up this morning Saw a world full of trouble now
Thought, how'd we ever get so far down How's it ever gonna turn around
So I turned my eyes to Heaven I thought, “God, why don't You do something?”
Well, I just couldn't bear the thought of
People living in poverty Children sold into slavery
The thought disgusted me So, I shook my fist at Heaven
Said, “God, why don't You do something?”
He said, “I did. I created YOU!"
If not us, then who If not me and you
Right now, it's time for us to do something If not now, then when
Will we see an end To all this pain
It's not enough to do nothing It's time for us to do something!
I'm so tired of talking
About how we are God's hands and feet But it's easier to say than to be
Live like angels of apathy who tell ourselves It's alright, “somebody else will do something."
PASTOR'S BOOK CHOICE(S) FOR FALL
"If You Want to Walk on the Water, You've Got to Get out of the Boat," is written by John Ortberg and facilitated by Buz Buzzard. The six-week class will meet on Sundays at 4:30pm beginning Aug 31 and Wednesdays at 9:30am be-ginning Sept 3. John Ortberg, Jr. is an evangelical Christian author, speaker, and senior pastor of Menlo Park Presbyte-rian Church in Menlo Park, California, an evangelical church with more than 4,000 members. To purchase a copy of the book, go to any Christian bookstore, order online, or call the church office.
Pastor Barry will offer a study of the book "Five Practices of Fruitful Congregations," written by United Methodist Bishop Robert Schnase. This study will begin a week after concluding Ortberg's book.. Call the church office for a book or email the pastor at [email protected]. This study will call us to become more intentional in fulfilling our mission to be and make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of our community and the world.
NEWSLETTER… To ensure the Bethlehem Messenger is able to be delivered in a timely manner each month, please turn in your articles to the church office no later than Tuesday, Sep-tember 16.

MISCELLANEOUS
Congregational Care Giving Team: Please prayerfully consider being on this team, especially if you have the spiritual gift of helping and serving. If you would like to help occasionally with a caregiver's light housework, errands and sitting with their loved one for an hour or two so the care giver can connect with church or their community, or if you are a caregiver and would like to take advantage of this opportunity, please contact Re-becca Allis at [email protected] or 671-3096.
CHURCH BELL RINGING... If you are interested in volun-teering to ring the church bell on a rotational basis, contact Re-becca Allis (671-3096).
On the topic of volunteers ...
anyone interested in working the Camera
during Worship?
The Camera is located in the Balcony and we need volun-teers who are attentive to what is going on during the ser-vice along with being creative in zooming in/zooming out appropriately and turning the camera to keep up with the
service. No button pushing or complexities like that. We'll have others producing a DVD of your "camera work" and
posting on the Internet. Once posted on the Internet, you will be able to see the results of your work and learn how
to make future refinements to your camera work. You would be working side by side with two other volunteers who operate the Sound Board and working the slide pres-
entations.
We also need some "computer savvy" folks who can take the Camera's SD Memory card containing the recorded ser-
vice to your home computer to produce a master DVD of the service along with uploading the video to the Internet.
We are working on documenting a process to do this.
Please contact Carl Moser ([email protected]), Pastor Barry Lemons, or Shannon at the office.
