Our first meeting will be Thursday, November 3rd, 7:00-8:30 p.m. in the St. Thomas Room in the parish hall. If you are interested, please call the parish office, (510-538-7941) to sign up.

You are invited to attend a one-hour presentation of Catholic Chari-ties East Bay (CCEB) at Transfiguration Church on Saturday, Dec. 3 in our parish hall, Marian Room. CCEB staff, clients, and volun-teers will explain how their programs move families and youth from crisis to stability and prosperity. You're likely to deepen your understanding of needs and solutions in our diocese, and be sur-prised about how CCEB "...welcomes the stranger, heals trauma, and fosters self-sufficiency." Express your interest in attending this parish event: Call or text Bruce King at 510-210-1410 or email [email protected].

Sixty Plus or Minus Club Please join us in the Hall following the 9:30 a.m. Mass on Fri-day, November 4th. Our hosts will be Barbara Coelho, Dorothy Maisel, Shirley Thornally, and Patty Moeller. Bingo will be played after the meeting. Guests are always welcome. Please sign up today if you plan to attend. St. Vincent de Paul Collection

There will be a second collection for St. Vincent de Paul the weekend of October 29 and 30. SVdP helps the poor in our parish by providing food, gas, and household assistance to our neighbors in need. In August, SVdP volunteers made 48 visits providing assistance to 237 individuals, many of whom were children. We appreciate your generosity and encourage you to be generous once again. Please use the envelopes in the pews for the collection.

Congratulations to the parents of Emma Jean Leal Ryanna Renee Robb who were baptized here last weekend.

St. Vincent de Paul Thanksgiving Food Drive

St. Vincent de Paul will be collecting non-perishable food items the weekends of Nov. 5, 6 & Nov. 12, 13. Collected food will be distributed to poor families in the parish before Thanksgiv-ing. Suggested food items are canned vegetables, fruits, beans, soups, cranberry sauce, boxed items such as pasta, turkey dress-ing, crackers and jar items such as pasta sauce and gravy. Please, no expired dates. There will be a bin in the entrance of the Church where you can place your items. Your donated food will be greatly appreciated by the families we serve.

Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA (AMS) Next weekend, we take up the collection for the AMS. The AMS relies solely on private donors in support of its mission, “serving those who serve”. This collection will provide the Gospel, the sacraments and other forms of spiritual support to the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces wherever they serve and to veterans who are in VA medical centers.

LETTER FROM POPE FRANCIS THE “JOY OF THE GOSPEL” CONTINUED...

The Proclamation of the Gospel—#156

Homiletic resources

Some people think they can be good preachers because they know what ought to be said, but they pay no atten-tion to how it should be said, that is, the concrete way of constructing a sermon. They complain when people do not listen to or appreciate them, but perhaps they have never taken the trouble to find the proper way of present-ing their message. Let us remember that “the obvious im-portance of the content of evangelization must not over-shadow the importance of its ways and means”. Concern for the way we preach is likewise a profoundly spiritual concern. It entails responding to the love of God by put-ting all our talents and creativity at the service of the mis-sion which he has given us; at the same time, it shows a fine, active love of neighbour by refusing to offer others a product of poor quality. In the Bible, for example, we can find advice on how to prepare a homily so as to best to reach people: “Speak concisely, say much in few words” (Sir 32:8).

Fr. Terry’s Remarks— Pope Francis gives us today a quotation from Sirach : ''Speak concisely, say much in a few words.'' (Sir 32:8). It's obvious that Sirach was not an Irishman. But Irish or not, it is a very good idea to pay attention not only to the message, we must also prayerful-ly reflect on our presentation. If anyone of us were about to deliver an important gift or message, we would be fool-ish not to give some thought and consideration on how to package our gift. What greater gift is there to share than the Word of God? God calls us to preach the Gospel. God calls us all to share the Gospel, so let us be generous in our reflection, loving in our presentation and timely and hopeful as we share together our Redemption.
