THE BEST SELLER

The Bible is the best-selling book of all time. The Bible is God’s book. The only one He has ever written. The average lifespan in North America is 77 years. We spend a lot of time reading novels, magazines, internet material. We may read hundreds, maybe thousands, of books in our

lifetime. How about God’s book? How will you explain to God when you see Him face to face that you never had time to read His book?

The Bible is our human “textbook”. It is our “owner’s manual”. It is our story of salvation. Through ancient literary techniques God presents His truth that is truth for all times. “God’s word is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword. It penetrates and divides soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the reflections and thoughts of the heart.” (Heb. 4:12-13)

Since God’s Word is “living and effective,” it has power to change lives.

One of the most dramatic examples of the Scriptures’ divine ability to transform men and women involved the famous “Mutiny on the Bounty.”

Following their rebellion against the notorious Captain Bligh, nine mutineers, along with the Tahitian men and women, found their way to Pitcairn Island, a tiny dot in the South Pacific only two miles long and a mile wide.

Ten years later, drink and fighting had left only one man alive, John Adams. Eleven women and 23 children made up the rest of the Island’s population. So far this is the familiar story made famous in the book and motion picture. But the rest of the story is even more remarkable.

About this time, Adams came across the Bounty’s Bible in the bottom of an old chest. He began to read it, and the divine power of God’s Word reached into the heart of that hardened man on a tiny volcanic speck in the vast Pacific Ocean and changed his life forever.

The peace and love that Adams found in the Scriptures entirely replaced the old life of quarreling, brawling, and liquor. He began to teach the children from the Bible until every person on the island had experienced the same amazing change that he had found.

God’s Word is living and active, and when we read God’s Word it reaches out and touches the needs of our lives in remarkable ways.

There are several ways of “easing into” reading the Bible. Some folks subscribe to The Magnificat, others use The Word Among Us. Many have gone through the Bible studies that our parish offers.

The important point is this: spare yourself the future embarrassment when the Lord asks you, “Have you read my book?” In some way, read the Bible.

October 2015

My Dear Friends in Christ,

We celebrate World Mission Sunday on the weekend of October 17-18, 2015. As Pope Francis tells us in his 2015 World Mission Statement, “Mission is a passion for Jesus and at the same time a passion for his people. When we pray before Jesus crucified, we see the depth of his love which gives us dignity and sustains us. At the same time, we realize that the love flowing from Jesus’ pierced heart expands to embrace the People of God and all humanity.”

Every year the needs of the Catholic Church in the Missions grow—as new dioceses are formed, as new semi-naries are opened because of the growing number of young men hearing Christ's call to follow Him as priests, as areas devastated by war or natural disaster are rebuilt, and as other areas, long suppressed, are opening up to hear the message of Christ and His Church. That is why the in-volvement and commitment of Catholics from around the world is so urgently needed. Offerings from Catholics in the United States, on World Mission Sunday and throughout the year, are combined with offerings to the Propagation of the Faith worldwide.

The missionary work of the Church depends on each one of us. On World Mission Sunday, please be as generous as your means allows and continue to pray that all of us in the Diocese of Peoria may be eager and effective witnesses to God, our loving Father, and His only Son, Jesus Christ. Sincerely yours in Christ,

Most Reverend Daniel R. Jenky, C.S.C. Bishop of Peoria Note: The collection will be taken up next weekend, October
