PASTOR’S PEN
religious ideal with which few, if any, can identify.
We are not here discussing religion alone. We are
talking about life. Achievement in any realm
requires that hopes and dreams be translated into
reality by means of an active faith. An architect
dreams of a beautiful building surrounded by a
lovely landscape; then he sits down at his drawing
board, and with hard work and midnight oil turns
that dream into reality. A writer dreams of a story.
In his mind he can see the plot and all of the
characters. Then he goes to his computer and
with toil and sweat turns that dream into a book.
What about your dream? You have one, or at
least, you’ve had one, a dream of something
better. It isn’t going to fall in your lap. But you can
commit it to Christ and by means of an active faith
translate it into reality. Don’t listen to the cynical
voices that speak to you of impossibility. Keep
that dream alive in your heart; and then by the
grace of God in Christ, get up and start walking
toward it. That is what we mean when we speak
of reaching for something better.
When Bartimaeus heard that Jesus was near, he
began to shout. The nearness of Christ heartened
Bartimaeus with the hope of something better.
We need to hear that chord of hope in our day.
So many people are defeated by discouragement.
Despair is the great destroyer. Let any athletic
team decide that it is defeated, and the outcome
of the game is no longer in question.
Somewhere I read the story of a small town in
Maine that was doomed to extinction. The state
was building a power dam on the river and had
purchased all the surrounding land that would be
flooded by the lake. The little village was a part of
that land, and the effect on the populace was
devastating. Everything came to a standstill. No
one started a new house. All improvement and
repair ceased. What was the use in painting a
house or mending a fence if it was soon to be
covered with water? Why repair or replace
anything when the entire village was certain to be
wiped out? So, month by month, the town
became more dilapidated and ghostlier. Finally
someone painted a sign and put it at the entrance
to the village. It said, “Where there is no hope
for tomorrow, there is no power in today.”
That says it all. No one reaches for something
better unless he believes that something better is
within reach. Despair is one of the most
debilitating forces in all of life. Our world needs
desperately to hear the New Testament message
of hope. Follow Jesus through the pages of the
Gospels, and you will find that He constantly
encouraged people with the vision of a better life.
He said to the woman taken in adultery, “Neither
do I condemn you; go and sin no more.” He said
to a weak and vacillating fisherman. “You are
Peter and upon this rock I will build my Church.”
Just the presence of Jesus in the village of Jericho
awakened in Bartimaeus the hope of something
better. This Mass today will be worthwhile if just
one person, young or old, could recapture his
dreams and go from this place believing in the
reality of something better.
Active faith is an essential ingredient of healthy
living. Do not make of it some sort of a vague

CELEBRATE THE CHURCH
so fragile. There was serious doubt among the
membership whether the Church would survive.
Its key leadership cowered behind closed doors,
thinking their cause was surely lost. However,
many cultures and civilizations have come and
gone, but the Church lives on. The Church is so
solid that, for more than 2000 years, it has
outlasted the hostility of its foes and the stupidity
of its friends. We are not frantically trying to keep
the Church alive. It was here when we arrived on
the scene and will remain long after we are gone.
It has stood the test of time.
Another thing right with the Church is its record of
ministry to human need. Without that, the ability
to endure would be meaningless. Jesus measured
the worth of all institutions, not by their age, not
by their size, but by their usefulness. He must
surely apply that same test to His own Church.
And though its score has been far from perfect, it
does have an impressive record of service. We
are so familiar with this that we often take it for
granted. We seldom pause to appreciate what the
Church has accomplished across the centuries. It
has provided the inspiration, the leadership and in
many cases the money for much of the world’s
charitable endeavors.
One other word remains to be said. In a secular
world, the Church stands as a constant reminder
of God. It points the way to Christ. It calls us to
penitence and faith; it offers forgiveness and
healing. This is not the only business of the
Church, but it is the main business. The Church is
an institution whose primary purpose is bringing
people into a redeeming relationship with God.
There is a life here that is more than mortal, and a
Spirit that is more than human. God does not
belong to the Church; the Church belongs to God.
And when joined in partnership with Him, it is like
an army with banners, spread through all of time
and rooted in eternity.
We have criticized the Church, and we will criticize
it again, to love it is to have that responsibility. But
today, let us remember and celebrate what is
right with the Church.
Most of us seem to be more adept at leveling
criticisms than we are at giving compliments. A
family may eat ten meals that are a gourmet’s
delight and never say a word. Serve them just one
meal that is not to their liking, and they suddenly
become quite vocal. A worker may do his job near
to perfection, week after week, and never hear a
word of commendation. Let him make just one
mistake, and he hears about it loud and long.
Many voters admit that on election day they cast
their ballots, not so much for the candidate they
like, as against the candidate they dislike. Some
husbands and wives have lived so long with
critical spouses that a sincere compliment might
throw them into a state of shock. Most of us, it
would seem, express our disapproval more
effectively than we do our approval.
This same attitude carries over to the realm of
religion. Stop most any straggler on the street,
and he or she can tell you what is wrong with the
Church. It is populated with hypocrites; it is too
divided. It is out of touch with the times; it caters
to the rich and neglects the poor. In one form or
another, each of them has been true. It would be
false and futile to deny the faults and failures of
the Church. It is an institution made up of
imperfect human beings, and that means the
Church has always been and will always be open
to criticism and in need of correction.
This, however, is not the whole story. For all of its
weaknesses, the Church has much to commend it.
And occasionally, in the interest of truth and
balance, we need to turn the record over and play
the other side. Let us lay aside our tendency to
criticize and instead express some appreciation.
Almost everyone is aware of the Church’s
shortcomings. However, let us focus our attention
on what is right with the Church.
One of those right things is its ability to endure. All
our Scripture lessons carry us back to the
beginning of the Church. The people who wrote
and originally read those documents were first
generation Christians. They stood on the ground
floor of a brand new institution. Like all newborn
things, the Church was small and seemed

THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 1 HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION
Masses will be at:
6:30 AM 8:00 AM

Two Prayerful Days This week we celebrate two special days in the life of the church. Both these days are steeped in meaning and spirituality. On Thursday, November 1, we celebrate the Feast of All Saints, and on Friday, November 2, we celebrate the Feast of All Souls. All of us know so many people in our families and circle of friends who are holy and live saintly lives. They live their faith day in and day out and we all admire them. What is holiness? Holiness is doing the will of God by living out your vocation to the fullest and worshiping and loving God in the church He created. We should all strive to be holy because we all want to end up in heaven with God. In heaven there will be no sorrow, no pain, no hardship, and no struggles of any kind. We will understand everything we wanted to know, all the secrets of the universe, and the mysteries of our faith. We will have everything we want, and we will be secure in this eternal happiness knowing that there is no possibility of ever losing it. We honor all the Saints in heaven and on earth this day. On Friday, November 2, we celebrate the Feast of All Souls. For someone who is grieving the loss of a loved one or friend, the word “celebrate” may seem a little out of place. What we are celebrating is that our loved ones are with God, and specially on this day we do not want to forget them. All Souls Day is a day to remember Mom, Dad, loved ones and friends. We love them so much while they were living, why would we forget them now. It is our good fortune to have a special day to pray for them and have masses said for them. We never want to ever forget them! Please pray for the Souls in Purgatory because they can’t help themselves, and specially pray for your loved ones.
These are “Two Prayerful Days”.
