A Message From Father Aaron
What about Cremation?
Dear Friends,
On the occasion of a funeral the subject of cremation
occasionally surfaces. Cremation of the deceased has become
more common in recent years. For many years the Catholic
Church opposed the practice of cremation. Romans cremated
the dead due to their belief that there was no afterlife. The
practice of cremation became associated with pagan societies
in Rome and Greece. Disallowing cremation stemmed from the
biblical scripture (Gen. 1: 26-27), which teaches an extreme
respect for the human body, both in life and in death.
“This is the body once washed in baptism, anointed with the
oil of salvation, and fed with the bread of life…Indeed, the
human body is so inextricably associated with the human person
that it is hard to think of a human person apart from his or her
body.” Order of Christian Funerals (OCF 412)
In recent decades the Church has allowed cremation, due
to various factors. In 1917, the code of Canon Law allowed
cremation only in times of plague, disaster, or other situations
that necessitated a quick disposal of the body. In 1963, the
Catholic Church changed its policy and lifted the ban on
cremating due to sanitation risks, overcrowded cemeteries, and
financial reasons.
However, the Church has remained constant in the teaching
that the remains of the deceased are to be buried in a sacred
place. In 2016, the church issued an instruction on proper burial
and the subject of cremation. Cardinal Mueller, former Prefect
of the CDF, (Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith) said that
the Catholic Church wholeheartedly recommends continuing the
"pious practice of burying the dead." It is considered one of
the corporal works of mercy and, mirroring the burial
of Christ, it more clearly expresses hope in the
resurrection when the person's body and soul will be
reunited. What is more, he said, labeling an urn or tomb in a
public place is an expression of belief in the "communion of
saints," the unending unity in Christ of all the baptized, living
and dead. "Other believers have a right to pray at the
tomb" and to remember deceased members of the
Catholic Church on the feast of All Saints and All Souls.
This allows the deceased burial in a sacred place that can be
visited by friends and family for generations after their passing.
The custom of a parish visitation with a prayer service and
with the body present can be very helpful in the grieving
process.“The body that lies in death recalls the personal story
of faith, the past relationships, and the continued spiritual
presence of the deceased person” (OCF, Cremation Appendix,
p.11)
May we continue to remember the deceased in our prayers
and thank God for the blessings we have received through them.
“Eternal rest grant unto them Oh Lord, and let perpetual light
shine upon them!”
God bless you,
Father Aaron
Eucharistic Adoration Campaign
We would like to strengthen our regular
Eucharistic Adoration hours, add to our sub
lists, and hopefully increase our adoration
hours at both St. Anthony and Assumption
parishes.
Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament comes
easily. Never feel worried if you find you
have no thoughts at all while you are before
the Blessed Sacrament. Never feel
inadequate about being an adorer even if
you have not developed a spirit of devotion,
if you are numb, down and out, weakened
by life. The all important factor is that you
are before the Lord. Before Him who knows
you inside-out. He reads your innermost
thoughts and He still loves you immensely.
Imagine that! St. John Vianney once
compared adoration to spiritual sunbathing.
You are taking in the warmth of the grace
and love radiating from the Sacred Host.

Traveling Chalice and Madonna
WHAT IS A SISTER? A Sister lives in a religious
community that follows a constantly renewed tradition,
patterned on the life and teaching of the founder of the
community. The work she generally does will depend
upon the ministries of that community as influenced by
the needs of the Church and its people, for example:
teaching, social work, administration, nursing, peace
and justice ministry, etc. If the lifestyle of the Sister
sounds attractive to you contact the St. Cloud or New
Ulm Diocesan Vocation Office for more
information. MANY THANKS TO GENE AND DONNA
BISCHOF FOR HOSTING THE TRAVELING CHALICE
AND MADONNA THIS WEEK! YOUR PRAYERS ARE
INSTRUMENTAL IN MANY, MANY GRACES.

Rite of Minor Exorcism On
September 22 and 28, the
catechumens (unbaptized people
studying the catechism) are
continuing their initiation process through a minor
exorcism. A minor exorcism is a petition addressed
to God. "They draw the attention of the catechumen
to the real nature of Christian life, the struggle
between flesh and spirit, the importance of self-
denial for reaching the blessedness of God's
kingdom, and the unending need for God's help."
