A FEW WORDS FROM OUR PASTOR

Today the church throughout the world celebrates the Solemnity of the Birth of Saint John the Baptist. Today’s feast is one that generally does not fall on a Sunday, but since it does this year, I thought it might be a good time to talk a little bit about this great man who prepared a way for God’s people to recognize and encounter Jesus the Christ. For most of us, when we think of John the Baptist, our immediate thoughts go to some crazy-looking man who wore camel skin and made a diet out of locusts and wild honey. We think that way because we don’t fully understand or comprehend just how important a person John the Baptist was in the early community. It was John’s mission to prepare God’s people for the Messiah. It was his task to get the people to recognize that someone great and powerful was on his way—and John was a man who would stop at NOTHING to get that message across. He told people that they needed to reform their lives and turn away from whatever it was that was preventing them or distracting them from seeing the face of Christ in their lives. John didn’t want the people to miss out on the opportunity to not only welcome the Messiah—but to follow in that Messiah’s footsteps as well. Unfortunately, we all know how this story ends. John’s message made a lot of people upset and uncomfortable—so much so that he was eventually arrested and thrown in prison. Yet even when John began to have his doubts about Jesus (remember, he sent his friends to find Jesus and ask him, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we look for someone else’?), he continued to place his trust in the God he loved very much. John may have lost his head for the Gospel he proclaimed, but he gained a place in heaven as the precursor to our Messiah. On this great Feast of the Birth of Saint John the Baptist, may we never lose heart in proclaiming our commitment to Jesus. May our faith and commitment to the Christ sustain us in our own proclamation of the Gospel as we prepare future generations to encounter Jesus in their daily lives. It’s not always going to be easy, and there will be times when we encounter opposition to the message we bear—but if we are going to bring Jesus to others– then there is no better person whose intercession we can rely on than Saint John the Baptist. Have a great week everyone. Father Frank

SAINTS PETER AND PAUL

On Friday, June 29th, the Church celebrates the

memory of two great apostles—Saint Peter and Saint

Paul. Saint Augustine reminds us that “this day has

been made holy by the passion of the blessed apostles

Peter and Paul.” The Opening prayer from the Mass

on the Feast of Saints Peter and Paul tells us that

“through them the Church first received the faith.”

Both Peter and Paul were fearless defenders of the

faith, and stood up for what they believed in, even to

the point of death. They were both extraordinary

leaders—even though they disagreed at times—

encouraging their communities to remain faithful to

the Christ who saved them. They did not allow

difficulties or persecution to slow them down in their

zeal for Christ or in their preaching of the Gospel.

Both men were chosen by Christ to preach his Gospel.

Peter was the acknowledged spokesman of the

apostles. He undertook enormous hardships and

fearlessly faced persecution. He was a man of

action—particularly as a result of his love for Jesus.

Paul started out as a persecutor of the church. Yet

during his conversion experience, he came to

recognize the Christ, and became a staunch defender

of the Gospel from that day forward. His life, his

example, and his letters have been the inspiration for

the preaching church since.

These men came from two different worlds, yet

both were brought together by their common love for

Christ. To return to Saint Augustine once more,

“These martyrs realized what they taught, they

pursued justice, they confessed truth, and they died

for it.”

One of the things we can learn from Saints Peter

and Paul is that we too have been chosen by Christ to

preach the Gospel. We all have a share in preaching

Christ crucified and raised from the dead. The

question that lies before us though is: “Am I ready to

do it?”
