A future generation, formed for justice and peace, who believe in Jesus Christ as the One who “makes all things new,” is the true hope for the world. The Pope calls on world leaders responsible for public policy and economic institutions to work for the creation of structures, laws, and environments permeated with a deep sense of the dignity of the human person. Hopefully, this will enable future generations to find decent employment, education, health care, and housing, all of which are necessary for forming a civilized culture of peace. Educating Young People in Justice and Peace

Forty five years ago, following his encyclical Pacem in Terris (Peace on Earth), Pope John XXIII designated January 1st World Day of Peace. In calling atten-

tion to peace on the first day of the year, Pope John hoped to inspire us to reflect on peace as a gift from Christ to the human community and to call all people to concrete action on behalf of peace.

Subsequent Popes have used the occasion to call the leaders of the world as well as the faithful to various aspects of Catholic Social Doctrine. Papal statements have addressed such topics as the United Nations, human rights, labor unions, economic devel-opment, peace in the Holy Land, and terrorism.

The focus for the World Day of Peace in 2012 is “Educating Young People in Justice and Peace,” making this the fourth time that the World Day of Peace has been linked to youth. Pope Benedict high-lights two needs regarding youth and peace. The first is the formative role of parents, guardians, teachers, and mentors. The second is the need to both l isten to and enhance the role of new generations in developing a common good based on justice and peace in which human rights can be expressed and realized.

Pax Christi New York has long supported the need to educate young people for peace. Children in this culture are saturated with violence in their neighborhoods, on TV, movies, computer games, and videos, in school, and sometimes even in their homes. Studies by the American Psychological Association indicate that the average child in this culture witnesses 8,000 murders and 100,000 acts of violence before even finishing elementary school. Pax Christi Metro New York has developed a fifteen-session program designed to teach young people positive, creative approaches to the conflicts they face each day. From Conflict to Common Ground instructs students in the methodology of peacemaking and places conflict resolution in a Christian context.

Non-violent conflict resolution grows out of the Christian tradition. Pax Christi’s program explores topics such as the nature of conflict, perceptions and misperceptions of conflict, responses to conflict, assertive communica t ion sk i l l s, ac t ive l i s t en ing , s t eps to conflict resolution, forgiveness, and meditation as a resource for peacemaking. Pax Christi facilitators train teachers to present a program to students that can be integrated into religion or social studies curricula. The

entire program gives concrete shape to the efforts at promoting peace among youth.

Pope Benedict XVI a lso addresses policymakers of the world. He notes that there is no peace without justice. The importance and potential of the global “spring-time” beginning in the Arab world and spreading to Europe and North America through the “Occupy” movements is not lost on the Pope. He recognizes the potential of youth to participate in something larger than themselves that changes the world.

He stresses the duty of the present generation to prepare future generations for a new world, a world whose promise and hope will be found through the young.

Education without reformed institutions will not suffice!
