PARISH NEWS

STATIONS OF THE CROSS Every Friday during Lent, Stations of the Cross will be conducted after the 12 Noon Mass fol-lowed by Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament in the Chapel. The Teen Club will conduct the Living Stations of the Cross on Friday, April 3rd Friday, April 10th at 8:00 PM in the Church.

ABSTINENCE Abstinence from meat is observed on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all the Fridays of Lent by all Catholics 14 years and older.

FASTING Fasting is observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59. Those bound by this rule may take only one full meal; two smaller meals are per-mitted as necessary to maintain strength accord-ing to one’s needs, but eating solid food be-tween meals is not permitted. There is a serious obligation to observe these penitential practices in a substantial way. Those whose work or health would be impaired are excused from fast and abstinence. Individual conscience should decide proper cause of excuse. A more serious excuse is required to excuse oneself from Ash Wednesday and Good Friday fast and absti-nence. During Lent, the Church encourages at-tendance at daily Mass, self-imposed time of fasting and generosity to local, national and worldwide programs of sharing.

year Catholics try to answer the age old question: What should I do for Lent? Well, who better to pick for as your Lenten spiritual direc-tor than Pope Francis? He has some great ideas for you! Here we selected 3 of his best tips for this week: 1. Prayer “In the face of so many wounds that hurt us and could harden our hearts, we are called to dive into the sea of prayer, which is the sea of God’s boundless love, to taste his tenderness. Lent is a time of prayer, of more intense prayer, more prolonged, more assiduous, more able to take on the needs of the brethren; intercessory pray-er, to intercede before God for the many situa-tions of poverty and suffering.” – Homily, March 5, 2014 2. Fasting “We must be careful not to practice a formal fast, or one which in truth ‘satisfies’ us be-cause it makes us feel good about our-selves. Fasting makes sense if it questions our security, and if it also leads to some benefit for others, if it helps us to cultivate the style of the Good Samaritan, who bends down to his broth-er in need and takes care of him.” – Homily, March 5, 2014 3. Almsgiving “Today gratuitousness is often not part of daily life where everything is bought and sold. Every-thing is calculated and measured. Almsgiving helps us to experience giving freely, which leads to freedom from the obsession of possessing -from the fear of losing what we have, from the sadness of one who does not wish to share his wealth with others.” – Homily, March 5, 2014

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

FORTY DAYS FOR LIFE… I always remember a priest friend of mine who told me about his Uncle Pat. Pat was a heavy cigar smoker. During the forty days of Lent, Pat would give up the cigars as a sacrifice. However, his uncle would get so ornery around the house because he couldn’t smoke that his exas-perated wife would say to him, “Pat, please have a cigar so all of us can get some peace around here!” I am not sure our penances should make us grouchy or even worse than we are! All of us do get so attached to some of the pleasures of this life that we find it hard to “give up” something. However, if we can’t give up something, how about doing something instead? Last Sunday after an inspiring Mass celebrated by Bishop John O’Hara, there was an interesting presen-tation in the auditorium by one of our parishioners, Debbie Sucich on what is known as “40 Days for Life.” You might have heard about it in church. “40 Days for Life” is a campaign that aims to end abortion by a calm, prayerful witness. As Debbie explained it to us, “40 Days” is a non-stop, round the clock prayerful vigil outside a planned parenthood center or an abortion facility in the community. Here on Staten Island, such a facility is across the street from Staten Island University Hospital on Seaview Avenue. Many of the par-ishes here on Staten Island including Saint Charles will participate, not for twenty-four hours, but for twelve hours each day from 7 to 1PM and then from 1 to 7PM. Participants will hold signs reading, “Pray To End Abortion” and are not supposed to be confrontational. Rather, they will pray during the time that they spend in front of the hospital. The sight of so many people praying and holding those signs really sends a very powerful message to the community at large about the tragic reality of abortion in our country,. Recall that over 60 million preborn lives have been snuffed out since the Roe VS. Wade decision in 1973 which legalized abortion. By seeing committed Catholics and others out there praying, some women have changed their minds about having an abortion. This is proof that prayer works even in the most difficult of situations. Literature is provided to women that there are indeed alternatives to abortion. The “40 Day for Life” website stated that since 2007 there have been 16,742 lives saved, 106 abortion centers closed and that 190 abortion workers have quit. Even if there was only one life saved that would be a good thing! Saint Charles parishioners will be out in front of Staten Island University Hospital on Sun-days until April 5th for the twelve hour time period. Of course, you don’t have to stay the entire time. But how about spending one hour and praying for an end to the grim reality of abortion in our land? So many of us have become very callous to life in our country most especially our politi-cal leaders and candidates. Abortion is often spoken of as a choice and a right. However, there is never a right to do a wrong. As Catholic Christians our most effective weapons against moral evil is not violence, but rather the spiritual armaments of prayer and fasting. Why not consider participating in “40 Days for Life” on Sundays as an effective Lenten penance? It won’t be as difficult as giving up smoking or candy bars, but your presence there on Seaview Avenue just might help to save one life and that should make you smile and God smile as well! Sincerely in Christ, Father Jerome 10
