Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time w October 20th, 2019Exod 17:8-13 w 2 Tim 3:14-4:2 w Luke 18:1-8

Dear Parishioners, In our gospel today, Jesus shares a story which is intended to

inspire us to "pray always without becoming weary." The main character is a persistent woman who repeatedly gives voice to injustice and is continually disregarded. In the end, the dishon-est judge delivers a just decision "because this woman keeps bothering me." The persistent woman's public lamenting is dismissed no more.

Jesus urges us to remember that God will hear and grant justice to those who "cry out day and night." There is reason to have hope and to take heart. Tonight, our parish commu-nity, along with our Jesuit friends and alumni, are honored to have Dr. Cathleen Kaveny guide us in exploring this biblical tradition of "Prophecy, Lamentation and Hope." Together we will challenge ourselves with the question: How do we move beyond anger to find the necessary energy and hope for reform, without forgetting, ignoring or condoning injus-tice?

Praying the truth with God involves bringing our pri-vate lamentation and despair with injustice into the light of community. What are you lamenting in our world and Church today? Our St. Ignatius community is full of persistent men and women who have dedicated their time and energy in a variety of ways to work for social and environmental justice in our community. We do this in collaboration with our Ignatian partners and Jesuit apostolates in Boston. Yet we can feel alone and dismissed in our efforts unless we create opportunities to come together for conversation to deepen our understanding and explore ways to harness our energy and insight.

You are invited to help us create encounters for Ignati-an community development in our parish and in the Boston community. We would love to hear your ideas for ways that our parish can better extend hospitality to those who are on the margins in our own faith community and beyond. Perhaps you might like to serve on our Spiritual Life and Ignatian Com-munity Development Commission, or maybe you have time to work on a community-building event or project? Please con-tact me at the Parish Office 617-552-6112 to share your insight and ideas.

Together we are seeking to explore new ways to develop community and renew our spiritual lives. This is Jesus’ invi-tation to "pray always without becoming weary." Join us this Sunday evening to engage with all of our Jesuit friends, to give light to our lamentations, and move forward together in hope.

With hope,Kathy Maher

Join us for this opportunity to celebrate our common Jesuit bonds with Mass at

The biblical tradition includes an important strain of righteous anger. But how do we move beyond anger to find the necessary

energy and hope for reform and even redemption, without forgetting, ignoring, or condoning injustice?

This talk ponders this question, which is so important to the church today.

Offertory Collection July to September, Three Months: 2019 - $182,046 2018 - $213,993

Thank you for your continued stewardship of our parish. As you can see, our offertory continues to

decline and is approximately 15% lower than last year. Thank you to all who participated in the “Take a Step” offertory commitment. If you did not have a chance to return your envelope last weekend, you can still return your envelope by placing it in the offertory collection.

You can also mail or drop off the envelope at the Parish Office. If you did not receive the materials, please contact the Parish Office. All information is also

available at the entrances of the church. We ask all parishioners to please carefully and prayer-fully consider their current giving and take a step in if you are not already supporting the parish, or take a step

up to commit to a new level of support. Online giving is the most convenient way.

Please consider enrolling today. Visit stignatiuschestnuthill.org/donate.

Many thanks!

These revised Bylaws are posted on our webpage on the parish website. We invite you to read them and share with us any comments you may have about them or any concerns you may have about our par-ish. Racial Justice CommitteeThis past week (October 14th) many states and communities observed Indigenous Peoples’ Day instead of Columbus Day. In Open Wide Our Hearts: The Enduring Call to Love, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bish-ops remind us, “Native Americans experienced deep wounds in the age of colonization and expansion, wounds that largely remain un-

healed and strongly impact the generations to this day.” All Catholics are called to give renewed attention to the historical and present injustices resulting from racism against Native Americans, bet-ter integrate the needs and contributions of Native American Catho-lics, and work for greater justice for the descendants of the first Amer-icans. This week, consider this prayer to Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, the

first Native American to be made a saint:Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, our elder sister in the Lord, discreetly, you watch over us; May your love for Jesus and Mary inspire in us words and deeds of friendship, of

forgiveness and of reconciliation. Pray that God will give us the courage, the boldness and the strength to build a world of justice and peace

among ourselves and among all nations. Amen.
