Religious Formation Announcements

17th Sunday in Ordinary Time, July 30, 2017

Family Connection for this week: Like the person who found the buried treasure and the merchant who acquired the pearl of great price, we seek to find the signs of the kingdom of heaven in our lives. In fact, we even work to bring about God’s kingdom in our actions and in our words. We pray that our family values reflect our pursuit of the kingdom of heaven. As Je-sus’ disciples, we place everything we value in the service of the pursuit of the Kingdom of God. As you gather as a family, talk about what your family values. Make a list together of those things that your family considers most important, such as family, friends, faith, trust, and love. Place this list before you as you read today’s Gospel in its shorter form, Matthew 13:44-46. In these parables, Jesus teaches us that it is worth giving up even valuable things in order to pos-sess the kingdom of heaven. Look at the list your family made and talk about how these things are important to the kingdom of heaven. What has your family given up to make these values important in your life? As Jesus’ disciples, we place everything we value in the service of the pursuit of the Kingdom of God. Pray together for God’s kingdom by praying the Lord’s Prayer. Statement from Bishop John O. Barres on the appointment of Auxiliary Bishop Nelson J. Perez

as the Bishop of the Diocese of Cleveland It is with “the Joy of the Gospel” that the People of God of the Diocese of Rockville Cen-tre receive the news that Pope Francis has appointed Bishop Nelson J. Perez the Ordinary of the Diocese of Cleveland (Ohio). Bishop Perez is a compassionate and loving pastor who as Vicar of Eastern Long Island and His-panic Ministry in the Diocese of Rockville Centre shepherded the People of God with both the spirit of the Divine Mercy and the New Evangeliza on. Bishop Perez’ great strength, pastoral insight and support of the People of God in our parishes was drawn from his years as a dedicated pastor of parishes in the Archdiocese of Phila-delphia. He experienced every joy, sorrow and challenge a parish pastor experiences and our priests understood that he knew them and supported them. With his background in counseling, the depth of his prayer life and liturgical life, and his joyful and charisma c personality, Bishop Perez brings both the Joy and Laughter of the Gospel into every room he enters. Bishop Perez’ na onal leadership in Encuentro V has been inspira onal and has expanded his vision about how to support culturally diverse missionary disciples in every area of the United States of America. One special moment with Bishop Perez among many was a bus ride we shared in Sep-tember 2015 at the World Mee ng of Families in Philadelphia. We were on the way to see Pope Francis at St. Charles Seminary when Bishop Perez told me the story of his near fatal car accident on Long Island as a rela vely new auxiliary Bishop and the process of his rehabilita on. His experience of the Cross brought him an even deeper faith, pastoral compassion and trust in God’s will working in his life. It was one of the most powerful and inspiring personal moments I have ever experienced with a brother Bishop. We the People of God of the Diocese of Rockville Centre give God thanks for the ministry of Bishop Perez and we rejoice today with Pope Francis, Bishop Perez, his dear parents and fami-ly, and the People of God of the Diocese of Cleveland.

CENTERING PRAYER Centering Prayer is a method of silent prayer that

helps open our hearts and minds to consent to God’s presence and action beyond words,

thoughts, and emotions. Rooted in ancient Chris-tian prayer practices, Centering Prayer prepares us to receive

the gift of Contemplative Prayer, the awareness through faith of God within us, closer than consciousness itself. Cen-

tering Prayer meets at the Athletic Fields Library -6140 Northern Blvd Watch for the next date. If you have Ques-

School Districts Ban Prayer at HS Graduations

Indiana: Contrary to U.S. Department of Education guidelines and a recently passed Indiana House Bill, the Elkhart Community Schools have surrendered to the "Freedom From Religion Foundation" and banned prayer at Graduations after one parent complained to FFRF that a recent graduation ceremony opened with a prayer. Pennsylvania: In a similar incident, Beaver HS also violated the First Amendment and U.S. Dept. of Education policy when it did not permit a student to deliver her prepared graduation closing remarks because she mentioned thanks to God.
