The mission is clear: vibrant and extensive discipleship, a growing and palpable clarity of engaging each other, our faith communities and humanity with the first proclamation: Jesus Christ is risen. As the ‘news’ of the prime proclamation deepens its hold on our minds and hearts and our Church structures, the world sees the joy of the Gospel (Evangelii Gaudium) and the joy of love (Amoris Laetitia). I am enjoying my focused ministry here at St. Benedict Parish. Celebrating mass with the 1st and 2nd graders is such fun. The all-school mass with grandparents attending was awesome. Hearing confessions always humbles the confessor! Meeting with brides and grooms as they prepare for the years of a marriage launched by a wedding day remains inspiring. Even surprises are formative. Last Sunday at the 10:30am mass an alarm went off as the gifts were brought to the altar. In the end the alarm was caused by a failing smoke alarm in the balcony. There was some drama: I thought it was my microphone or the sound system; Jeremy turned off the sound system and the noise continued. When I was told about the possibility of a gas leak at communion time, I asked everyone to leave. Gratefully the fire department ruled out a gas leak as the reason. When Jesus speaks of his disciples, he uses family language: sisters and brothers. When Jesus speaks of intimacy with God, he uses family language: ‘Father’ or ‘This is my beloved son: listen to him’. When Jesus describes the Holy Spirit’s activity, he uses family language: ‘What father among you would give a son a stone when he asked for bread’. The Church to which we belong at its heart is a family system. Yes, the generic system many know: mother, father, brother, sister, aunt, uncle, cousin, in-laws. And the Church includes the not-so-generic within the intimacy of family: widow and widower, single and single parents, seasoned and young, vulnerable and strong, healthy and ill. The Church treasures each human being as belonging to an Other and to us. The Church at each level (parish or diocese, school or university) and circle (scripture study group or food pantry volunteers) norm their language and behavior within a framework as a family of families. We are embedded in a network of families. And we each have empirical evidence that families are wounded and can be a mess. Today, there will be a 2nd Collection immediately following Communion for World Mission.Thank you for your generosity.

Blessed be Jesus Christ! My name is Tomasz Powroźnik. I am a seminarian of the Bishop Abramowicz Seminary at Mundelein. I was born in Poland in Czestochowa on May 17, 1982. My father, Andrzej is retired. My mom, Zdzisława, works as an economist. I have a younger married brother, who has two children. They all live in Poland. When I finished high school I enrolled at the University where I studied public administration. I finished the university with a Masters degree. After that I worked first in the Polish department of tax and next in the Polish Telecom. All this time I was close to the Church and every holiday I spent on pilgrimage to holy places. One day I decided to leave my job and go

to the seminary. This decision changed my life. In the Polish seminary I finished philosophy, and I spent a lovely time there. It was a time of prayer, of silence and reflection. One day a priest from the U.S. came to the seminary to talk about the Church in Chicago and how multicultural America is. I was most interested. We talked intensively, and as a result I decided to move to Chicago. I arrived in Chicago on August 7, 2014 speaking almost no English. I knew only some simple words. English is not easy, but I am learning, and I will say I am happy after meeting all of you – wonderful people, wonderful Americans who are always open to others, and helping without expecting anything in return. I’m glad that I’m here in the United States, and I am glad that people in the Church are also united. I thank you very much for welcoming me to your parish. Thank you to your pastor, Fr. Jason Malave, for welcoming me to the rectory, and for helping me learn the language as well as spiritual matters. I also would like to thank you all for the kind words. Please pray for me, and I promise to pray for you.

356The Lord Hears the Cry of the Poor/Psalm 34

1. I will bless the LORD at all times;his praise shall be in my mouth.

Let my soul glory in the LORD;the lowly will hear and be glad.

2. The LORD confronts the evil ones, destroys the remembrance of them.

The just will cry and the LORD will hear, and save them from all their distress.

3. The LORD is close to broken hearts, saving those crushed in spirit.

The LORD redeems his servants’ lives, all those who take refuge in him.

VERSES

1. God is a refuge and strength, a helper close at hand, close to my distress.

2. So may we not be afraid, though trembling is the earth, though all the mountains fall.

3. though all the waters may rage, the seas press all around,my God will be my strength.

4. the rivers resound with great love, the city sings for joy, with God we will stand firm.

5. Consider the works of the Lord, the labors God has done;all conflict now will cease.

6. the Lord of creation is near, a stronghold deep within,“Be still and know God’s peace.”

Head and Heart Discipleship

For the past year, this page has focused on all the ways that we grow closer to Jesus on our journey of faith. As we, at St. Benedict, have had a more intentional and

specific focus on growing as disciples of Jesus, our Catechetical Commission and Spiritual Life Commission articulated that sometimes we grow closer to Jesus because of what we learn (Head) and

sometimes we grow closer to Jesus because of our prayer, retreat experience, mission or some encounter (Heart). So not only will we hightlight the ways that we learn (Head) about Jesus in our Catechetical Conversations,

we will also hightlight the ways we experience Jesus (Heart).

We will fill the groups with no more than eight participants, on a first come first basis. Please drop off this form at the Rectory or in the collection basket. Thank you!

The Beloved Retreat ExperienceFounded in 1999, the Beloved Retreat offers a community within a parish and our Catholic Church. Our hope is that, together, we can rediscover what often eludes us, but what God wants us to know: that we are Beloved. We offer a safe, open and inclusive environment in a quiet, pastoral setting where you can explore your relationship with God and yourself. The Beloved Retreat is an interactive weekend (Friday evening to Sunday afternoon) retreat experience inviting participants to contemplate the unlikely, giddy and provocative prospect we are actually passionately Loved by God. • The retreat is held at beautiful St. Mary of the Lake University in Mundelein, IL with more than 800 acres to explore.• Fee: $225 includes all meals and lodging. Scholarships are available.• 2016-2017 Beloved Retreat dates: November 18-20, 2016 and May 19-21, 2017

Stewardship: Belong, Pray, Learn, Give, Serve

Stewardship Reflection The First Reading today comes to us from the Book of Sirach, which was once known as the Wisdom of Sirach. As is the norm with Sirach, he gets right to the point in the first verse of the reading: “The Lord God is a God of justice who knows no favorites.” We are all familiar with the idea of favorites: we may have a favorite color, or a favorite food, or a favorite flower. However, it is comforting to know that God has no favorites. We are all His children. This fact is reinforced over and over in the Bible. Consider the following: “For there is no favoritism with God.” (Romans 2:11); “For the Lord your God is the God of gods…who favors no person and accepts no bribe.” (Deuteronomy 10:17); St Peter opened a sermon with these words: “In truth, I see that God shows no partiality.” (Acts 10:34). We may sense that God does not have favorites, that He loves us all equally, that we all can be saved, but we also need to note that God cannot be bribed or bought. What God expects of us is for us to be disciples, to be good stewards, to live righteous lives. If we sincerely do that, if we pursue holiness as we are called to do, then truly as the Lord tells us in today’s Gospel, “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.” God is good — to all of us.
