When I had my business, I was
always asking myself questions
about my customer. Who were
they? Who could they be? How
could I find them? What kind of
customer was the best for my
bottom line?
On the one hand, I don’t think I ever told a company
or organization that I wouldn’t bid on their project,
so I could say my customer was anyone that wanted
to do business with me. On the other hand, spending
time considering who I wanted for a customer meant
cultivating “good” customers. A good customer was
one that appreciated what I could do for them, with-
out a lot of second-guessing, that paid on time and
that referred other customers. A good customer was
one for whom I could do bigger projects, with fewer
points of less profitable contact. (In seven years of
doing business, I was only stiffed once, and the moral
of that story is race car drivers may not make the best
customers.) Living in Iowa City meant I got a lot of
business from various departments and organiza-
tions connected with The University of Iowa. My lit-
tle business benefited a lot from that substantial eco-
nomic engine. The University was, without a doubt, a
good customer.
I recently participated in a five-day workshop called
“Executive Skills for Pastors” led by faculty from the
School of Management at California Lutheran Uni-
versity. We covered a lot of ground over that five
days, considering:
•What business can teach us about evangelism?
Learning from the world of marketing.
•What does money tell you about your ministry?
Learning from the world of finance.
•What does our environment tell us about direction?
Learning from the world of entrepreneurship and
strategy.
•Leading a herd of cats! Learning from the world of
leadership.
•Why being (or knowing) a geek matters. Learning
from the world of information technology.
As I reflect back, the question that interested me the
most was, “who is our customer?”
How we answer this question can inform many of
our other decisions and actions. I hope to reflect on
this question with different groups at the church, and
then also take it up with our long-range planning
team.
So how would you answer the question, “who is our (Continued on page 9)

on by bringing food for the hungry. Your dona-

be given to the food pantry at

Once again this year we had our Snow Spectacular
event indoors. Last year it was no snow and this year
frigid temps. Even though we were inside, the kids
still had a blast.
We started the event with a devotion lead by Sarah.
We discussed the fact that God blesses us with fun
and beautiful things like snow and we can be thank-
ful and rejoice in that! After the devotion came the
games. We had snowball fights, built snowmen using
marshmallows, and much more. The big hits of the
day were ice skating using wax paper and an im-
promptu game of bingo.
We ended with a hot chocolate buffet. The kids had
fun mixing in chocolate chips, marshmallows, cara-
mel, and much more. It was all topped off with
plenty of whip cream.

Thank you everyone for the winter apparel you do-
nated to the giving tree. Joe and Helen Johnson
counted 63 caps, 7 caps and scarf sets, 15 scarves, 2
head bands, 16 pairs of socks, and 33 pairs of gloves
and mittens. All these items were boxed and taken to
Children and Families of Iowa and the Neveln Cen-
ter. Both places were so thankful to receive these
items. They will keep someone warm in the fridgid
Iowa winter.
Building a Personal Care Kit for Lent:
Each Sunday in Lent we are going to specify one item
needed for the health kits which will go to Lutheran
World Relief.
February 20/21: One light-weight bath-size towel,
dark colored.
February 27/28: Two bath-size bars (4 to 5oz.) of soap,
any brand, in original wrapping.
March 5/6: One adult-size toothbrush in its original
packaging or multi-packs may be used by sealing
an individual toothbrush in a business-size enve-
lope; no plastic bags or wraps.
March 12/13: One sturdy comb (no picks or fine-
toothed combs); remove packaging.
March 19/20: One metal nail clippers (attached file
optional); do not worry about packaging. The
woman will be glad to do that.
Items can be placed in the identified area in the fel-
lowship hall.
Upcoming important dates:
February 6: SE Iowa Women of the ELCA Winter Re-
treat, February 6, at Quakerdale Wolf Ranch, Mar-
shalltown. Three ladies from our congregation will be
attending. The cost is $15.00 for the one-day session.
It’s not too late if you would like to go.
February 7: Souper Bowl of Caring
February 17: WELCA is serving a Lenten Soup
Supper
February 20/21: Building a Personal Care Kit for Lent
begins.
April 16: Lutheran World Relief truck loading
April 23: 10/11 Cluster Gathering at Winsor Heights
It is so nice to see the box filling with card fronts for
St. Jude’s Ranch for Children in Boulder City, Ne-
vada. It can be any kind of greeting card fronts (no
writing on them.) Drop your cards off in the WELCA
room anytime. We will continue to collect through
February.
Sunday January 24 was our WELCA winter gather-
ing. 30 ladies attended and we listened to Mona
Abrahamson speak about buttons. Did you know that
Goodyear made rubber buttons for many years, and
they are quite collectible? Refreshments were served.
A short business meeting was held. It was decided to
support the request from the SWO Synodical
Women’s Organization board to buy piglets from the
ELCA Good Gifts to help eliminate World Hunger.
When little female pigs grow up, they can give birth
to as many as 16 piglets each year. Pigs help fertilize
fields, provide food to eat and can be sold at market
for much needed income. Should a family have a
failed harvest, medical expenses or other unexpected
needs, these pigs can be cashed in as supplemental
income.

the legislative process.
The group will meet at 9:30 a.m. at Capitol Hill Lu-
theran Church in Des Moines, later heading over to
the Iowa Capitol.
The day’s schedule includes:
• A morning training session with speakers

customer?” I invite you to think beyond the response,
“all of God’s children.” What we do and how we do
it can indicate who we think our customers are, as
much as who we would like our customers to be. Be-
ing thoughtful about our customer will make us
thoughtful about our mission.
Who is our customer? Is it the membership of the
church, and if so, is it all members, regular members,
inactive members, financially generous members, or
members who actively participate in worship and
programming? Is it our children, seeking to grow in
the faith? Is it older adults, who need the church com-
munity, but feel disconnected because of health con-
cerns?
Is it potential members of the church? And if so, do
we identify that group as those who come through
our doors, visiting on a given Sunday, those who re-
spond to church-related posts of Facebook,
neighbors, family or friends who don’t have a church,
but might be seeking that connection.
Is it those who are touched by the message of the gos-
pel, either because of an experience at RLC, or be-
cause of an experience with a member who has
brought the gospel to life in their own life in a way
that has meaning for those who encounter them?
Is it those who are served by the gospel, either
through a direct program or activity of the church,
like the shelter meal, or a visit to the Women at Well
prison congregation, or through the actions of an
RLC member, living out the gospel in service in their
life outside of the church?
How would you answer the question, “who is our
customer?”
