Conductor’s Notes Th e Ch r i s T m a s se a s o n

Welcome to our Christmas Lessons and Carols concert. It is our pleasure this afternoon to offer you a collection of musical Christmas treats as we celebrate this wonderful season together. I can’t think of a better way to enjoy favourite carols than with the celebratory sounds of brass and the spectacular Casavante organ at St. George’s Anglican Church as we raise our voices together in song.

Like any good collection of gifts under a tree, our program includes something for everyone – old favourites, new ideas, some surprises, and a lot of delights. Interspersed is an eclectic mix of spoken texts read by our GCC members, and instrumental selections performed by our guest brass quintet.

We begin with a brass fanfare from the 16th century Venetian composer Giovanni Gabrieli followed by a 20th century choral classic, Hodie, Christus Natus Est by Canadian icon, Healey Willan. Other offerings from Canadian composers are Eleanor Daley’s fanfare for choir and brass, Gloria in excelsis Deo, Stephen Chatman’s extended carol medley Christmas Joy, and Paul Halley’s closing arrangement of Joy to the World. Alongside these more familiar names is music from the next generation of emerging Canadian composers; you will hear the atmospheric music of The Frost by Kathleen Allan, and a setting of Lucy Maud Montgomery’s poem (yes, the well-known author of Anne of Green Gables), The Christmas Night by Patrick Murray. Rounding out the afternoon are performances of the first published work of a young Benjamin Britten, A Boy Was Born, written when he was just 19 years old, and a unique brass and choral arrangement of Bob Chilcott’s lovely setting of the familiar Christina Rossetti text, Mid-winter. Leroy Anderson’s familiar classic Sleigh Ride adds a dash of fun. As a special treat today we welcome guest singer, Natalie Fasheh, who is leading us in Laylat al-Milad, sung in Arabic – a first for the GCC.

Guelph Chamber Choir takes great pleasure in working with fine musicians from the area and beyond, and this afternoon we are pleased to welcome our guest brass quintet: Kevin Swinden, Julia Vaughan, Tony Snyder, John Monkhouse, and Eric Probst, as well as Guelph organist, Gerry Manning, and our own Alison MacNeill on piano.

Today’s concert is the first of our two seasonal offerings, with Messiah just a few weeks away. We hope you will join us again as we perform Handel’s most famous work on the stage of the River Run Centre on December 21 where we will be joined by a stellar group of soloists and Musica Viva Orchestra playing period instruments.

a new ChapTer

In 1980 a group of choral music lovers decided that Guelph needed a new choir dedicated to singing the finest works of the repertoire with skill and musical sensitivity. Our first performance, on December 7, 1980, featured twenty-six singers in front of an audience of nearly two hundred at Harcourt Memorial United Church. Conductor Gerald Neufeld led the choir for all but two years of its history when Kathryn Laurin ably took the baton.

After Gerald Neufeld’s retirement in 2018, an extensive search process was conducted during the 2019 season and Charlene Pauls was named Artistic Director and Conductor starting with the 2019/2020 season.

Over the years our ranks have swelled and our talents deepened. Now at forty voices strong we still hold close to the ideals of chamber singing: lightness and clarity of tone, subtle blending of developed voices, and clear communication of the meaning and spirit of both text and music.

Singers in the Guelph Chamber Choir represent various walks of life; their common bond is to foster community enjoyment and appreciation of choral music through performances, outreach, artistic collaboration, and community partnerships.

We remain an integral part of the strong musical heritage of Guelph. Our performances include repertoire from Renaissance masters to contemporary composers, from classical styles to Broadway and vocal jazz, and from unaccompanied choral gems to masterworks with full orchestra.

We often collaborate with other choirs from across Canada and within our own community. We have participated in festivals throughout Ontario and have toured Great Britain, Ireland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and the Czech Republic. Our success has been recognized through a number of broadcasts on national radio and prizes in the National Competition for Canadian Amateur Choirs.

The Christmas Night Wrapped was the world in slumber deep,By seaward valley and cedarn steep,And bright and blest were the dreams of its sleep; All the hours of that wonderful night-tide throughThe stars out-blossomed in fields of blue,A heavenly chaplet, to diademThe King in the manger of Bethlehem.

In the dim-lit stable the mother mildLooked with holy eyes on her child,Cradled him close to her heart and smiled;Kingly purple nor crown had he,Never a trapping of royalty; But Mary saw that the baby’s headWith a slender nimbus was garlanded.

Speechless her joy as she watched him there,Forgetful of pain and grief and care,And every thought in her soul was a prayer; While under the dome of the desert skyThe Kings of the East from afar drew nigh,And the great white star that was guide to themKept ward o’er the manger of Bethlehem.

The Frost The frost that stings like fire upon my cheek,The loneliness of this forsaken ground,The long white drift upon whose powdered peakI sit in the great silence as one bound; The rippled sheet of snow where the wind blewAcross the open fields for miles ahead; The far-off city towered and roofed in blueA tender line upon the western red;The stars that singly, then in flocks appear,Like jets of silver from the violet dome,So wonderful, so many and so near,And then the golden moon to light me home–The crunching snowshoes and the stinging air,And silence, frost and beauty everywhere.

Mid-winter

In the bleak mid-winter frosty wind made moan, Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone; Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow, In the bleak mid-winter long ago.

Our God, Heaven cannot hold Him nor earth sustain; Heaven and earth shall flee away when He comes to reign: In the bleak mid-winter a stable-place sufficed The Lord God Almighty, Jesus Christ.

Angels and archangels may have gathered there, Cherubim and seraphim thronged the air – But only His mother in her maiden bliss Worshipped the beloved with a kiss.

What can I give Him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd I would bring a lamb; If I were a wise man I would do my part; Yet what I can, I give Him - give my heart.
