Leaders

Saint Louis Christian CollegeSummer 2014

Saint Louis Christian College pursues excellence in the Word and develops servant leaders for urban, suburban, rural and global ministry.

FROM THE PRESIDENT

When I think of the future of Saint Louis Christian College I think of

graduates who will spend the rest of their lives serving Christ. SLCC

has so many good role models.

Dr. Mike Pabarcus graduated from SLCC in 1974 and has taught

hundreds of students since 1979. Some SLCC graduate will someday

take his place in the classroom and prepare a new generation of

graduates for ministry.

Larry Doggett just retired as Professor of Missions at SLCC. Professor

Joe Lieway, 1996 graduate of SLCC and Larry’s former student, will

lead a new generation of SLCC graduates to the mission fields around

the world.

Chancellor Tom McGee has influenced the churches around St. Louis and in southern Illinois for over 50

years and now his daughter, Professor Alice Perrey, teaches English to young preachers who will share the

Gospel with thousands. Tom’s son and 1978 SLCC graduate, Charlie, leads a St. Louis church. Tom’s

grandson, 1999 alum Philip Perrey, preaches at another St. Louis church.

Retired preaching professor, Keith McCaslin, never knew that three of his students, Joe Putting, Johnathan

Mast, and Mont Mitchell, would preach to thousands every weekend.

The future of Saint Louis Christian College can be best summarized in one word: eternity. Since 1956 one

generation has taught the next and that generation has taught the next. Our legacy is teaching each next

generation. Many churches refer to this as NextGen ministry. That NextGen is our future.

BEYOND THESE WALLS

Following graduation I will serve in children’s ministry at Tomoka Christian Church in Ormond Beach, Florida. I will work with elementary-age students using the education and experience I have gained through my classes at SLCC and my work at a local church. I am grateful for the opportunities God has provided while I’ve been in school and the doors He has opened as I head out to do ministry. ~ Brittany Bowers

My plan, following graduation, is to continue to fulfill God’s calling on my life to be a minister of the Gospel to teens. I have been involved in youth ministry for the last three and a half years. I have been a camp faculty member every summer, worked as a youth minister at two churches, volunteered at another church, and began a youth group at another church. My plan, moving forward, is to serve in a full-time capacity at a church as a youth minster. As my wife and I endeavor to immerse ourselves into ministry, we desperately need the prayers of the saints to keep the fire of the Holy Spirit burning brightly in our souls. The education I have received at SLCC has made me more equipped, and better gifted to accomplish these ministry goals. God, my wife, and the church administrators recognize that and so do I. ~ Jeremiah Howze

Growing up in a preacher’s family household has given me many opportunities to fail, and it’s through the safety net of others in ministry that I have been kept in the game of “serving the Lord.” SLCC has been a big part of this safety net. SLCC has given me applicable teaching in the classroom and on the field. Academics, athletics, and administration of Saint Louis Christian College have helped me utilize the gifts God has given me, and the faculty has pushed me to grow even more. I am currently serving at Patoka Christian Church in Patoka, Illinois, and will continue to do so. Thank you all for supporting me through supporting my school with prayer and gifts. Please continue to pray that God will send more workers into His harvest fields. ~ Micah Schnautz

As I come to the end of my time at SLCC I am full of emotions. I feel the joy of completing a five-year journey that has been a struggle at times, and very rewarding at other times. There is also a sense of sadness as I depart, because many of my classmates, teachers, and faculty members have become family to me. Even though I will miss everyone, I am very excited to see where ministry takes me. Through the classes and sound doctrinal teachings, I have grown in many areas. I have also gained insight and wisdom into areas of ministry that I had never thought about. The teachers have challenged and stretched me, and my classmates have encouraged and walked with me. Therefore, my time here at SLCC has definitely been a blessing to me personally, mentally, and spiritually. I now feel I have on the full armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-20) as I go into the world to spread the gospel of Christ. ~ Cary Braggs

INTERPRETING THE WORDBy Dr. Eddy Sanders

Dr. Eddy Sanders, Preaching Professor

There is a fundamental difference between a speech and a sermon. The difference is identified with one question: Did the message say and do what the Scripture passage said and did? If it did, it’s a sermon. If not, it’s a speech. I wonder if many times on Sunday mornings people are hearing a speech when they need a sermon.

The church needs to hear what God communicated in the Bible to grow in faith. That’s accomplished through biblical preaching. 1 I’d like to share a few questions that hold me accountable to the text and result in a biblical sermon rather than a speech!

1. What’s my text?2. What’s the topic of my text? In other words, what’s the author talking about?3. What’s the fundamental question the text is asking?4. What’s the answer to the question?5. How can I say the question and answer in contemporary language? Here’s an example. Before you read what I have, look at the text yourself and see what you come up with!

Text: Matthew 13:1-23Topic: GrowthQuestion: How did the disciples and early church know they had embraced the gospel?Answer: The disciples and early church knew they had embraced the gospel when they produced an exponential crop reflecting the seed.Contemporary: We know that we have embraced the gospel when we see it reproduced exponentially around us.

1 My thoughts are shaped by Kent Edwards. See his Deep Preaching (Nashville, TN: B&H Academic, 2009), 57-74.

The Need for Biblical Sermons

The Preaching Ministry degree is designed to prepare graduates to become effective leaders and communicators in the church. It empowers the leader to guide people in a broken world to see their story as part of God’s redemptive work. This degree provides graduates the education, skills, and resources to lead people, churches, youth groups, and para-church organizations in spiritual and organizational growth. In addition, course content will provide preaching ministry students an understanding of organizing and implementing church programs through project planning and development. Students are also taught to prepare themselves spiritually, relationally, mentally, and emotionally for effective leadership.

training, and experience that is unique to Bible college and study their intended field upon transferring. It also allows students to receive a biblical foundation in their studies, as secular classrooms will often challenge the students’ belief systems and faith. If you know someone who might be interested in enrolling at SLCC to participate in one of these partnership programs, please have them contact the Admissions Office for more information.

At SLCC, we are passionate about training men and women in God’s Word and His work. That work happens inside and outside the church, and we want to prepare our students for whatever ministry the Lord calls them to serve. For students who are passionate about furthering the Lord’s Kingdom, but desire to work in a vocation outside full-time ministry, we have partnership programs with several schools to make that a possibility. These partnership programs offer nearly 200 degree options students could transfer into after receiving their Associate of Arts in General Studies from SLCC. This opens the opportunity to begin at a Bible college and receive the knowledge,

SLCC Camp Teams 2014 are well underway! We are

working hard to prepare for a fantastic summer. This

summer, 13 camp team student representatives will

travel to more than 20 camps and interact with hundreds

of teens! We are really excited to serve at some new

camps, as well as return to camps from previous years,

making a total of 33 weeks of camp. The teams work

hard all summer teaching lessons, leading family groups,

representing SLCC, and ministering to teens all in the

name of Christ. Prayers for strength, wisdom, and safety

are greatly appreciated for this important ministry.
