Jesus Lives!

He is not here, but He has been resurrected!L U K E 2 4 : 6 H C S B

Jesus died on a cross and was buried in a tomb. On the third day, He rose from the dead. It’s called “the resurrection,” and we celebrate it every year on Easter Sunday.

The story of Easter is the story of God’s love, God’s miracles, and God’s offer of eternal life to all people who welcome Jesus into their hearts.

As we think about Christ’s resurrection and what it means to us, we should pause and give thanks to the Father and the Son for the gift of eter-nal life, a gift that costs us so little because it cost Christ so much.

The resurrection of Jesus, the whole alphabet of human hope...is the heart of the Gospel.

While Joseph and Mary were in Bethlehem,

the time came for her to have the baby. She gave

birth to her first son. There were no rooms left

in the inn. So she wrapped the baby with cloths

and laid Him in a box where animals are fed.

Luke 2:6-7

After being out in the fields taking care of the sheep,

it’s sure nice to get back into the warm stable. It’s espe-

cially fun to snuggle up with all the lambs! Stables

can be smelly, but I’m used to it now. Have you ever

smelled the animals in a barn? The rooms in houses

where visitors stay don’t smell like that! You know

what? I actually like the smell now because it’s real. It’s

not fancy. Mary and Joseph sure didn’t seem to mind

the smell either. I guess when you’re holding such a

special baby it’s pretty easy to forget about the uncom-

fortable stuff around you like animals or a smelly

stable! Do you ever wonder why God chose such a

humble beginning out in a stable?

Christ…gave up His place with God and made Himself nothing. He was born as a man and

became like a servant. And when He was living as a man, He humbled Himself and was

fully obedient to God. Philippians 2:6-8

Jesus was God’s Son, the Savior of the world, but His first bed was a box where animals are fed. The first people that saw Him were lowly shepherds. There was no parade with loud music and people cheering. There was no presentation with very important people around. There wasn’t even a room reserved for Him. There was just a baby in a barn. Jesus came in the humblest of ways. From the start He showed us what it looks like to be a Savior for all people, not just the important or famous ones. Aren’t you glad to know He came for everyone!

The angel said...“Zechariah, don’t be afraid. Your prayer has been heard by God.” * The angel said...“Don’t be afraid, Mary, because God is pleased with you.” * The angel said, “Joseph...don’t be afraid to take Mary as your wife.” Luke 1:13, 30 Matthew 1:20

God sent angels from heaven four different times to announce details about the birth of Jesus—the angels were kept really busy! No other earthly event had so much heavenly activity! The angels came to talk to Zechariah, Mary, Joseph, and to the shepherds in the field near Bethlehem, where Jesus was born. They got to share some incredible news about what God was up to!

Find out more:

Luke 1:5-20, Luke 1:26-38, Matthew 1:20-23, Luke 2:8-14.

An angel of the Lord stood before them (the shepherds). The glory of the Lord was shining around them, and suddenly they became very

frightened. The angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid, because I am bringing you some good news.”

LUKE 2:9-10Have you ever wondered what was going on in Heaven right before the birth of baby Jesus? Something really big in God’s plan was about to happen so they must’ve been really busy! I’m pretty sure God was getting the angels ready to come tell people that His Son was going to be born. Wow! What a great job those mighty mes-senger angels have—telling people about God’s plan! One thing’s for sure—it’s a little scary when angels show up right in front of you with a message from God—even if the message is good news! Your eyes get really big, your mouth opens wide, and you feel like you can’t move your feet—have you ever felt like that? Do you think you’d like the kind of job angels have—telling people good news? Guess what—God says we get to help share His story of good news right where we are! All these years later, the message of Jesus is still the greatest news ever!

Mary and Elizabeth

Luke 1

Imagine being Mary—a virgin told by an angel you are going to have God’s baby! That’s a little much for anyone to be able to hold together alone. So, what does Mary do? Luke writes that Mary “set out and hurried” to the hill country where her relative, Elizabeth, lived.

When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, God moved inside her. Yes, it was baby John, the future messenger of God who jumped inside her. But Luke writes that Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit. With the Holy Spirit inside, Elizabeth knew and believed immediately—even without hearing Mary’s story—in the Son of God, growing in Mary’s womb. Elizabeth, this older woman, with a miracle of her own, spoke life and truth to Mary’s young, dueling heart. And Mary’s response to Elizabeth’s faith was to rejoice in the Lord. If she had doubts before, they were gone now.

God orchestrated the births of Jesus and John. He chose their mothers, not only for the sake of their babies, but God chose Mary and Elizabeth for each other too. Their friendship strengthened and encouraged each of them, growing them closer to the Lord and the truth.

What miracle have you seen and experienced?

What younger woman in your life could use the wisdom and faith God’s given you?

Joanna and SusannaLuke 8:3

Joanna was the wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward, while Susanna’s background is unknown. Both women are named in the list of women Jesus saved from evil spirits and diseases. And they both financially supported Jesus and His disciples from their own wealth.

Joanna and Susanna are beautiful examples of being better together as their lives became an outpouring of gratitude. Having been healed by Jesus, they gave what they had so that Jesus could heal others and bring the truth of salvation to the rest of Israel. They loved the Lord and followed Him throughout His ministry, committed to being with Him and supporting those who followed Him. The Bible implies that both Joanna and Susanna left everything behind in order to follow Jesus. In doing that, they gained a Savior, a fresh hope, and a community of believers. A whole new life.

What in your life needs to be left behind in order to follow Jesus wholeheartedly?

Do you have specific gifts, possessions, time, or abilities that could be used for His glory?

Mary and MarthaLuke 10

One sister hustled & steamed in the kitchen. The other sat, enthralled, at the feet of the Teacher.

The first—Martha—also stewed that her sister wasn’t helping to serve. The second—Mary—knew that serving the Lord often looks like giving Him space, time, and our full attention.

Not that Martha had it all wrong. She was just stressed. Her service was not done from a place of rest. And Jesus called her on it. But in the end, the house guests were honored through the hospitality of the two sisters. Later (John 12), Jesus showed up at Mary and Martha’s home again. The roles of the sisters hadn’t changed much—Mary worshiped Him extravagantly, and Martha served the meal. But once again the sisters honored the Lord with their hospitality and love.

Together these two sisters treated Jesus like the King He is. Martha couldn’t be Mary, and vice versa. Nor were they meant to handle it all on their own. They were better together.

Do you think of any of your strengths as real weaknesses?

Do you think any of your weaknesses could actually be strengths?

Mary Magdalene

Luke 24

Mary beheld the greatest news in all history. When she visited Jesus’ tomb that morning, Mary Magdalene expected to anoint His dead body with the spices and perfumes. But the stone had been rolled away from the entrance of the tomb and Jesus’ body was gone. Angels appeared and said that Jesus had risen, just like He said. At this, Mary and the women ran to tell the disciples what they had seen. He was risen, and Mary Magdalene—a woman scorned by society, but accepted by Jesus—had the dear privilege of sharing the greatest news in history with those who knew Him best.

Would you say that your relationship with Jesus is truly a friendship?

How has He shown you His closeness? How have you shown Him yours?
