Pastor's Jottings

The Coming King

We have received word that our new icon of Christ the King is complete. It was packed up in Portland, Oregon, where the artist lives, this past week, April 19 and 20. Travelling on a flat bed trailer, it arrives here at Christ the King April 26 or 27. Installation When the icon arrives, parishioners Chris Pu-taturo, Bob Flores and a small team will oversee taking the icon off the trailer with forklift, and bringing it into at least the narthex of the church. From there, it will be unpacked, and precise meas-urements will be taken for installing the icon on the back wall. The final wall preparation will take a day. In three places, extended patches of the sheetrock wall will be removed, and a 2" by 4" wood beam will be installed against the brick. These three wood beams will hold the wall aluminum brackets that will be bolted to the aluminum brackets on the back of the icon. Then the wall will receive another coat of paint. The icon, measuring 8 feet by 12 and weigh-ing 850 pounds, will be lifted against the wall by hooks installed on the icon itself, and it will then be bracketed and secured. Further necessary wall touchup will be done after that. Below the Icon Underneath the icon on the wall will be a bronze plaque with the following text from the Book of Revelation: Jesus Christ, the Faithful Witness, the First-born from the dead, the Ruler of the kings of the earth; he loves us, and he has washed away our sins with his blood, and he has made us a line of kings, priests to serve his God and Father. To him, then, be glory and power forever and ever. Amen. This plaque will be installed when it is ready.

Dedication of the Icon Once set in place, the icon will be veiled until it is dedicated. It is highly likely that the dedication, in the form of a blessing by the whole assembly, will be the weekend of May 7 and 8, the Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord. This solemnity is uniquely appropriate for dedicating our image of Christ the King because it is essentially an enthronement feast. The Weekend of the Dedication The artist, Father Jon Buffington, a Chaldean Catholic priest from Portland, Oregon, will be with us the weekend of Ascension. He will concelebrate during all the Masses and be available for conversa-tion afterwards. Father Buffington will also make a slide presentation about the icon, its construction and its writing, sometime during the course of the week-end he is here. Thank You A heartfelt thank you to the anonymous bene-factor who is making this gift to us, to Father Buff-ington the artist and to all those assisting in the in-stallation. Please stay tuned. More to come. Father Mike

Fifth Sunday of Easter

Love One Another

The Gospel of Luke offers anoth-er element that will help us live this Jubilee Year with vigor. Je-sus rose to read in his hometown synagogue, according to Luke 4. He read from Isaiah the Prophet, “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to bring good tidings to the afflicted; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and freedom to those in captivity: to proclaim the year of the Lord's fa-vor.” This “year of the Lord’s favor” is what we now enter into as our Jubilee. Let us address poverty once and for all. Let us proclaim liberty to those bound up in selfishness. Let us restore sight to those too blind to see human indignity. And let us do this cheerfully!

The Church has great needs around the world, and the United States is no ex-

ception. Many dioceses here at home face challeng-es due to priest shortages, lack of funds, remote ge-ography, or impoverished parishes. Your gift is an act of solidarity with your struggling brothers and sisters in Christ. Thank you for your generosity.

Reading I: Acts 14:21–27 (end of the first mission) Reading II: Revelation 21:1–5a (new heavens and new earth) Gospel: John 13:31–33a, 34–35 (a new commandment) Key Passage: Jesus said, “I give you a new com-mandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another.” (John 13:34) Adult: How in your family and community have you loved one another in the face of abuse or broken-ness? How does prayer to a merciful and compassion-ate God help you deal with this? Youth: How do you feel loved by Jesus? How do you share this love with others?

Give freely, and not with ill will for the Lord, your God, will bless you for this

in all your works and undertakings. Deuteronomy 15:10
