A Mother’s Love Helen Steiner Rice

A Mother’s love is something That no one can explain,

It is made of deep devotion And of sacrifice and pain, It is endless and unselfish

And enduring come what may For nothing can destroy it Or take that love away . . . It is patient and forgiving

When all others are forsaking, And it never fails or falters

Even though the heart is breaking . . . It believes beyond believing

When the world around condemns, And it glows with all the beauty Of the rarest, brightest gems . . .

It is far beyond defining, It defies all explanation,

And it still remains a secret Like the mysteries of creation . . .

A many splendored miracle Man cannot understand

And another wondrous evidence Of God’s tender guiding hand.

Christ Lutheran Church Building remains closed until further notice.

Christ is risen! He is risen indeed!

I am writing this newsletter article right before Good Shepherd Sunday (The fourth Sunday of Easter), and so the following words are on my mind: “I am the gate. Who-ever enters by me will be saved, and will come in and go out and find pasture.” (John 10:9) These words bring amazing peace to me at this time, because they are pure, one-hundred percent, grace. I have not become one of Jesus flock by anything I have done: it’s all Jesus’ doing. Jesus is the Good Shepherd who has led me to the open gate. Thankfully, we learn that Jesus is also the gatekeeper and the gate itself. And from here, I am free, one-hundred percent free to come in and go out and find pasture. This is grace. We don’t deserve it.

I know that many of us are looking forward to the day when we can be free to come in and go out as we please. Many of you are asking when we will be able to do this again at church. I wish I had some answers for you, but I don’t know the future. I can tell you a few things. First, the church doors will not just simply open and be “business as usual.” Not even church services will be as they were. We will be find-ing new ways to do the offering and communion. The jobs of the ushers, greeters, and door keepers will all be done differently. Secondly, we have to ask the question, “Who can come to church services in the beginning?” This is not a question of deserving: it’s a question of how can we be the church that “does no harm?”

We have guidelines to follow about people with certain con-ditions and who are over 60. One of the problems is that even your pastor is even over 60. How will we deal with this age issue? We don’t know yet. These aren’t issues any one of us can answer at this time. These are questions that can only be answered by doctors, insurance agencies, and oth-ers in authority, at a later time. Just know that we will come together again as the church, but there will be a process to follow instead of just turning the light switch to “ON.”

In the meantime, keep on running the race. Keep calling each other. Pray for each other. Keep yourself updated about what is happening in our church by reading your newsletter, looking on Facebook or the website for updates. Watch the worship services. There are children’s messages there too. I post daily (except Sundays) meditations on Fa-cebook, and on our website too. Keep the faith. Take care of those around you.

Lastly, be kind. I know there are frustrations and we wish things were different. Griping and criticizing others or the system does not help. Judging never does help…in fact, it usually aggravates the whole situation. Just take care of yourself and be kind to others.

God is doing a new thing. I know that, and I know God loves us very much. He has already sent us the Gate and the Good Shepherd. We are going to be fine, and we are going to be fine together as the Good Shepherd’s flock. Keep the faith. Be hope for each other. This is not the time to fear failure for things we tried: the worst thing to fear now is regret. The worst thing we can say after this is all over is, “We regret that…” Jesus is the gate, the gatekeeper and our Shepherd. The pasture is ours. Let’s do church…without regrets.

Peace be with you! Pastor Dale

Dear Friends in Christ,

This is tough. These times test our patience and charac-ter, and a whole lot of other things.

We grieve for many people and things. Among them:

The loss of corporate worship and fellowship. We re-member that the empty church is a sign of our love and respect for each other. Still, we are sad that East-er Sunday wasn’t the huge celebration we’d eagerly anticipated, and we really miss each other.

Our faith formation programs. Nothing has been nor-mal for Sunday School, confirmation, or our adult Bi-ble studies.

Our high school and college seniors. Your losses are real, and it’s okay to grieve. We probably can’t say anything that will make you feel better, but please know that we care about you. We hope to celebrate your accomplishments together soon.

All students and their families. So much has been tak-en from you this year. We know that, and we are sor-ry.

All who are ill, especially those who have been hospi-talized without loved ones at their sides.

Small business who have suffered tremendous loss.

Livestock producers facing grim decisions.

For all of us. Life is not normal. We miss being to-gether. We are concerned about our health and that of our families and friends.

Nevertheless, this I know to be true: Our grief and fears can be eased if we shift our focus to gratitude. What are you grateful for? Here’s a start:

We give thanks for:

The family of Christ Lutheran Church. Even though we’re not physically together, we are bound together as children of God.

Bishops, pastors, and other spiritual leaders who care for our spiritual and emotional well-being.

Worship leaders including musicians and tech volun-teers who have made worship possible during this time of physical distancing, and for the technology to keep us connected.

Dawn, our long-suffering office manager, who holds everything together with great patience and exper-tise.

Family members who look out for each other.

Health care workers who sacrifice so much as they care for others, especially during this time of pan-demic.

Teachers and other school staff who have had to re-invent how to do education.

Small businesses and farmers who carry on as best they can to serve our needs.

Friends who check on us and pray for us.

Spring! It’s getting green outside. New life and growth abound.

It’s okay to grieve. It’s a healthy response to loss. It helps us work through difficult situations. Spend some time in grief. But then find something for which you are grateful. At your meals and before you go to bed each night, think of at least one thing for which you can give thanks.

Also remember this: If you need someone to talk to, don’t hesitate to call us at the parsonage.

Yours in Christ, Gwen

The meeting was called to order by President elect, Brenda Whitehead. Those in attendance online were: Nancy Moberg, Karen Onken, Gwen and Pastor Dale Degner, Amy VanEck, Jeff Grieme, Dawn Mouw, Tim Lange and Kathy Behrends. Pastor Dale led us with devotions.

The Agenda was approved as pre-sented. M/S/P Pastor Dale/Karen The secretary’s report for the March 11, 2020 council meeting was present-ed. M/S/P to accept as presented. Tim/Karen The March treasurer’s report was re-viewed. The balance is listed as $5,195.33. A motion was made to approve the treasurer’s report for au-dit. M/S/P Pastor Dale/Karen Pastor Dale shared with the members his month’s accomplishments: There have been many challenges and new learning experiences encountered this past month, which was accomplished with aid from several valuable congre-gational members and their tremen-dous support. He is grateful for input. The Health ministry team has been

working with him to call our over 65 aged members. Zoom meetings have been a great tool he has been using for meetings. Easter services went well, making the best of the challenge of keeping socially connected while being physically distant. Plans are being worked on for continuing the Confirmation and Sunday school pro-grams, worship services, committee involvement, etc. Gwen reported that she has been in-volved with many zoom meetings, calls and conducting much ministry resource ministry. Communications with the Health Ministry team, SW MN Synod Youth Ministers, researched plans for children’s and youth ministry that can be shared online, assisting with our online Lenten/Easter services and the continued process of plan-ning, making those plans and then having to re-plan many of those pro-jects. Old Business: Synod Assembly Delegates: It is

uncertain at this time if the Assem-bly will be held at Gustavus Adol-phus on June 12 – 13. An an-nouncement will be made next week.

Christ is risen! He is risen indeed! These words of tri-umph are appropriate throughout the Easter sea-son. Easter is not just one day. It lasts for 50 days, with each Sunday being a Sunday of Easter. White and gold are the colors of the paraments for Easter.

On the 40th day of Easter, we celebrate the Ascension of

Our Lord. The day of Ascension falls on a Thursday. For Roman Catholics, it is a Holy Day of Obligation. Most Lutheran churches no longer have worship services on Ascension, but they may observe it on the 7

th Sunday of

Easter instead. You can read the Ascension story in Luke 24:44-53.

Finally, at the very end of May, we will celebrate Pente-cost. The color is red. The Pentecost story in Acts 2 tells of the coming of the Holy Spirit in the form of wind and tongues of fire. The Holy Spirit comes to us too, and chal-lenges us to spread the love of God through Christ Jesus to all the world.

SW MN Women’s Convention - May 2, in Redwood Falls - Cancelled

We thank you for the love of the mothers you have given us, whose love is so precious that it can never be measured, whose patience seems to have no end. Bless these amazing women, that they may be strengthened as Christian mothers. Let the example of their faith and love shine forth. When they are down, give them comfort; when they are discour-aged, give them hope; and when they are tired, give them strength. May they feel Your love in their hearts, Your peace in their minds, and Your joy in their spirits. Please bless our Mothers with the gift of Your love this Mother's Day. May we honor them in word and deed, and teach our chil-dren to do the same. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

Camperships Available

Again this year, the Endowment & Fellowship & Service Committees will be offering Camperships for Christ Luther-an members that attend Shetek Lutheran Ministries. Camp-erships are $200 for weeklong or specialty camps and $50 for mini-camps. Forms are on the church website under Youth/Bible Camp or on the Shetek Lutheran Ministries bul-letin board at church across from the Chapel Lounge. Is this your child’s first time to summer camp? The Memori-al Committee has scholarships available for first time camp-ers from Christ Lutheran who attend a program at Shetek Lutheran Ministries. These scholarships are in addition to the scholarships given by the Endowment and Fellowship and Service Committees. For a first time camper to attend a week of camp, the Memorial Committee will provide an ad-ditional $100 scholarship and for a mini-week at camp, an additional $40 scholarship. These scholarships are provid-ed by the Grieme family in memory of Shar and we are grateful for their gift.

Dear God our Father, You bring peace to our hearts through Our Lord Jesus Christ, and call some of us to defend and preserve Your peace at home and abroad. Thank You for the men and women who have laid down their lives so that we can continue to enjoy life, liberty, and the pursuit of happi-ness. They and their families are true heroes. Let Your perpetual light shine upon them and grant them eternal rest. Dear Lord, their example spurs us on to be peacemak-ers as well, by surrendering to Your Will and serving others, beginning in our own homes. Please protect all who serve in our Armed Forces, and keep us one na-tion, under You, with liberty and justice for all. In Jesus' Name we pray. Amen.

Hello,

My name is Dalton Kalina and I am the Meals Community De-velopment Manager at Lutheran Social Services. I wanted to pass along some information to you about our meals pro-grams. Our services support older adults to live healthier, more active, and independent lives, making eating fun and easy. We also serve individuals experiencing food insecurities or who need assistance with nutrition or dietary needs. Our meals are designed by a licensed, registered dietitian to en-sure that they are healthy and nutritious. Adjusted meals are available for individuals with special dietary needs, such as those who are diabetic or require a controlled sodium, low fat or low cholesterol diet.

Due to the COVID-19 virus, we are able to offer 14 day emer-gency meals supply in addition to daily delivered meals per week to seniors. COVID-19 has made it difficult for older adults to access food on a consistent basis, and we are hop-ing to reach out to our neighbors to fill this need with the Lu-theran Social Services meals programs. These meals are par-tially funded by the Families First and CARES act fund-ing. Clients will be asked to make a donation for the meals but there is no requirement of a donation if a client isn’t able to pay. I am hoping to spread the word of the home-delivered meals across Southwest Minnesota to help people impacted the most by the virus.

If someone is interested in SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition As-sistance Program) benefits they can contact LSS meals at 800-488-4146. to see if they qualify. If you know of anyone who may be interested in the meals program the best person to reach is Lisa Gillund Regional Manager of Lyon, Lincoln, Mur-ray, Renville, and Redwood county. Her contact information is [email protected] and 507-829-1422. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to get into contact with Lisa or me.

Shetek Lutheran Ministries Where Christ Renews and Empowers

Well, things look much different now than when the last

CANEWS went out! Shetek’s staff are busy planning for several

different scenarios for what camp may look like this season. Our

staff and board are still hopeful that we can do some onsite pro-

gramming this summer but there are a lot of unknowns. Shetek is

still hiring male staff for this summer’s programming. See below

for more details.

A reminder for us all at this time – “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and

courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be

discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you

wherever you go.” ~Joshua 1:9
