Check out a few of our donated items and start the bidding on the 19” flat screen LCD TV, the hand-crafted quilt, the Chase Utley Replica jersey and a lovely mink jacket in the Deppich Room before heading upstairs! If you have the highest bid, you do not have to be present to get the item! There will be a pizza lunch and meeting for all acolytes—servers, crucifers and torches, and those who are interested (ages 7-17)—during the annual meeting Sunday Jan 30, from 11:15-12:15, in the Deppich Room. Christ Church will NOT be hosting the Salvation Army Homeless this January. 2011 Offering envelopes are at the back of church. NOTE: We have a NEW system to cut down on waste. If you typically get envelopes or requested them, look for yours in the PRE-ASSIGNED group. They are numbered sequentially, so don’t worry if your 2011 number is different from last year’s number. If you haven’t had envelopes in the past or didn’t indicate your desire for them on the pledge card, please go to the UNASSIGNED group. IMPORTANT: You must put your name on the unassigned sheet next to the number of the envelope you are taking. Thank you! Prayer Friend –Those who would like to be prayed for by a member of the parish are invited to place their name on a slip of paper in the basket at the back of church, on the Memorial table. You are welcome to put as much or as little information as you like. Members of the parish who feel moved to take a name are invited to do so. So do check the basket from time to time to see if there is a prayer request waiting to be taken.

Volunteers are needed to help with the Nelson’s BBQ monthly fundraiser – we are looking for three or four volunteers willing to help Rich Klatt – one person a month, from 3:45 to 5 PM. Please speak with, or call Betsy Kirkpatrick if you can help with this fundraiser. Activity bags for children can be found on a rack in the back of church, under the memorial table. Bags with pink stickers are for younger children – up to age 5 or so. Please take any activity your child completes home with you and return the bags to the rack. Please do not take crayons, just the children’s work, home with you. We continue to collect food for some of the less fortunate folks in our community. When you shop pick up dry or canned good items and place them in the basket at the back of church or by the green doors.

A Note on Today’s Readings

The Third Sunday after the Epiphany—Year A

On the Sundays after the Epiphany, the liturgy continues to reveal ways in which Jesus was shown forth to be the Messiah in his ministry. In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus calls his first disciples, at least two of whom he had met earlier. Taking them from their work as fishermen, he calls them to fish for people.

Matthew began his account of Jesus calling his Galilean disciples beside the sea by repeating the vision of Isaiah that salvation for all would begin there beside the sea. Therefore, we have as our first reading that passage from Isaiah.

In today’s reading from 1 Corinthians, Paul addresses one of the problems plaguing the church in Corinth: disunity. Here it is the breaking of unity into little cliques each claiming superiority because of who first preached the gospel to them: Paul, or his successor Apollos, or Cephas (Peter), or Christ. Paul appeals to them to overcome their divisions and to be united in Christ.

Jesus’ ministry was corporate rather than individual from its beginning. His first act was to gather a community of believers that announced God’s plan to the people; united in trust in Jesus. We also are part of that community. Each time we celebrate the Eucharist we are shown forth to be the extension of the incarnation of God’s Son into our own time and place.

Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The following is said, all standing

Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

Collect of the Day

Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray. Give us grace, O Lord, to answer readily the call of our Savior Jesus Christ and proclaim to all people the Good News of his salvation, that we and the whole world may perceive the glory of his marvelous works; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

First Reading Isaiah 9:1-4

All sit.

A Reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah.

12

There will be no gloom for those who were in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he will make glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness—on them light has shined. You have multiplied the nation, you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as people exult when dividing plunder. For the yoke of their burden, and the bar across their shoulders, the rod of their oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian.

Reader The Word of the Lord. People Thanks be to God. Remain seated.

Psalm 27:1,5-13

Dominus illuminatio

1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom then shall I fear? * the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom then shall I be afraid?

5 One thing have I asked of the LORD; one thing I seek; * that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life;

6 To behold the fair beauty of the LORD* and to seek him in his temple.

7 For in the day of trouble he shall keep me safe in his shelter; * he shall hide me in the secrecy of his dwelling and set me high upon a rock.

8 Even now he lifts up my head * above my enemies round about me.

9 Therefore I will offer in his dwelling an oblation with sounds of great gladness; * I will sing and make music to the LORD.

13

10 Hearken to my voice, O LORD, when I call; * have mercy on me and answer me.

11 You speak in my heart and say, “Seek my face.” * Your face, LORD, will I seek.

12 Hide not your face from me, * nor turn away your servant in displeasure.

13 You have been my helper; cast me not away; * do not forsake me, O God of my salvation. Second Reading 1 Corinthians 1:10-18

A Reading from Paul’s First letter to the Church in Corinth.

Now I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you be in agreement and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same purpose. For it has been reported to me by Chloe’s people that there are quarrels among you, my brothers and sisters. What I mean is that each of you says, “I belong to Paul,” or “I belong to Apollos,” or “I belong to Cephas,” or “I belong to Christ.” Has Christ been divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, so that no one can say that you were baptized in my name. (I did baptize also the household of Stephanas; beyond that, I do not know whether I baptized anyone else.) For Christ did not send me to baptize but to proclaim the gospel, and not with eloquent wisdom, so that the cross of Christ might not be emptied of its power. For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

Holy Gospel Matthew 4:12-23

All stand.

Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew.

People Glory to you, Lord Christ. Now when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee. He left Nazareth and made his home in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, so that what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: “Land of Zebulun, land of Naphtali, on the road by the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned.” From that time Jesus began to proclaim, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.” As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea—for they were fishermen. And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fish for people.” Immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John, in the boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets, and he called them. Immediately they left

14

the boat and their father, and followed him. Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and curing every disease and every sickness among the people.

Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. Sermon The Rev. Douglas G. Tompkins

Nicene Creed

All stand.

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.

16

He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers of the People

Minister and People

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart;

18

we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. The Priest stands and says

Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

Doxology

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow / praise him, all creatures here below / praise him above, ye heavenly host / praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

Great Thanksgiving

The people remain standing.

Celebrant The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Celebrant Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give our thanks and praise. Celebrant It is truly right, and good and joyful, to give you thanks,

all-holy God, source of life and fountain of mercy. Therefore, joining with Angels and Archangels and with the faithful of every generation, we lift our voices with all creation as we sing (say):

The people stand or kneel.

The Celebrant continues

Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of the universe and giver of life. You formed us in your own image and called us to dwell in your infinite love. You gave the world into our care that we might be your faithful

19

20

stewards and show forth your bountiful grace. But we failed to honor your image in one another and in ourselves; we would not see your goodness in the world around us; and so we violated your creation, abused one another, and rejected your love. Yet you never ceased to care for us, and prepared the way of salvation for all people. Through Abraham and Sarah you called us into covenant with you. You delivered us from slavery, sustained us in the wilderness, and raised up prophets to renew your promise of salvation.

Then, in the fullness of time, you sent your eternal Word, made mortal flesh in Jesus. Born into the human family, and dwelling among us, he revealed your glory. Giving himself freely to death on the cross, he triumphed over evil, opening the way of freedom and life.

On the night before he died for us, Our Savior Jesus Christ took bread, and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his friends, and said: “Take, eat: This is my Body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.” As supper was ending, Jesus took the cup of wine, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said: “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is poured out for you and for all for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.” Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Celebrant and People

Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

The Celebrant continues

Remembering his death and resurrection, we now present to you from your creation this bread and this wine. By your Holy Spirit may they be for us the Body and Blood of our Savior Jesus Christ. Grant that we who share these gifts may be filled with the Holy Spirit and live as Christ’s Body in the world. Bring us into the everlasting heritage of your daughters and sons, that with all your saints, past, present, and yet to come, we may praise your Name for ever. Through Christ and with Christ and in Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, to you be honor, glory, and praise, for ever and ever. AMEN.

The Celebrant then continues

And now, as our Savior

21

Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, People and Celebrant

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. Breaking of the Bread

A period of silence is kept.

Alleluia. Christ our passover is sacrificed for us

Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia.

The Celebrant says

The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.

All baptized persons, whatever your denominational affiliation, are welcome to receive Holy Communion at our altar. You may stand at the altar rail if your knees do not permit kneeling. Please assist the chalice bearer by gently holding the base of the chalice. Please do not hold the top of the chalice. If you wish, you may intinct (dip) the host (consecrated bread) in the chalice. 23

Let us pray.

Celebrant and People

Now send us forth in the power of your Spirit, that we may proclaim your redeeming love to the world and continue for ever in the risen life of Christ our Savior. Amen. Blessing

The priest blesses the people, saying
