Immediately behind were 3 police cars with sirens screaming and lights flashing. We realised we could be in a bit of trouble and took evasive action. Meanwhile the driver of the car lurched to the right and crashed into the wall. He was immediately apprehend and spent the rest of the night in the Queens Institute. Welcome to Christ Church Cathedral Children are welcome at our services. There are toys in the quiet room which is the

room at the front of the Cathedral on the left hand side.

PLEASE FEEL FREE TO TAKE THIS PUBLICATION AWAY WITH YOU. Dear Cathedralites It was a memorable new year, not for all the right reasons. As you know this year I wanted to commit the Cathedral to opening all night for New Year’s Eve, and this we did. We had a gentle stream of folk thorough out the whole time, including a very lonely old man who tarried for about one and a half hours just to find some company on New Year’s Eve. However at about 2am Archdeacon Harvey Ruru and I decided to wander out of the Cathedral and down the road. We saw a car coming down the road at a great speed of knots, having jumped the roundabout. Pretty scary moment however the rest of the evening was fairy gentle and a number people came in and prayed. It was a good thing to do. I appreciate the help of the Maori Wardens, and who came in to enjoy a cups coffee during the night. It was great to have Margaret Poynton come and stay with us for a few nights this

week. Margaret is ministering over in Papa New Guinea where she is the Archbishop’s secretary and she is doing a sterling job. She has lots of contact with

congregations all over Papa New Guinea. At her request we provided a guitar so the villagers can use it for Church services. Praise God that Mary Toll heard of that request and provided Margaret with that much needed guitar.

On Wednesday 18 of us gathered at the Deanery and had a fine barbeque, dessert,

and then listened to stories of Papa New Guinea from Margaret. It’s been a great week for meeting various folk including Laurie and Georgina Ennor from our old

Parish in Christchurch. Laurie is an Ordained Presbyterian Minister who loved

playing our 2500 pipe organ. Their grandchildren had a great time learning how to ring the Cathedral bells.

Pam and Stuart Bruere hailed from Masterton where Stuart has a thriving Veterinary

Practice. His Dad was deemed as one of the best lecturers in Veterinary Science in New Zealand when he was lecturing at Massey University. They’re a fine Christian family.

It has been great having my sister Marilyn and niece Rose and Great Nephew Jack

staying for a few days as well. My undulating croquet course has had a good hiding. Today we celebrate the baptism of Jesus and many ask why Jesus needed to be

baptised since John the Baptist preached the need to repent of sins. Jesus hardly needed to do that but by being baptised he was making a definite positive decision ‘he was identifying with the Christian Community and he was being equipped through the power of the Holy Spirit in baptism.’ As we enter a new year it may be that we need to make definitive decisions to identify more with the Christian faith and to seek equipping for the journey. One of the curiosities about all this is that Jesus hardly baptised anyone. There are very few recordings of Jesus actually baptising people. The disciples did, but count how often in the New Testament you can read of Jesus baptising people. But then in the Great Commission He tells us to teach, preach and to baptise.

I had great meeting this week with Jane Mitchell, our lead organist, Melanie Carruthers, our lead conductor, and Patsy, who is the lead music co-ordinator and

we talked about the next few months and planned the music for all the services. They are a dedicated team who will be doing the engine work in music in the foreseeable future. I am indebted to them for their expertise and their commitment.

Have a great week Yours in His service, Mike

was obedient to them; and his mother kept all these things in her heart. And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and the people. Luke 2:51, 52

Over eighty gathered on 15 December at the Vic Brew Bar in Trafalgar Street to sing Christmas Carols. The Carols were led by Dean Mike, The Reverend John Sherlock (Mapua) and Johnny Laing, Youth Pastor.

A great time was had by all, and under their leadership, assisted by substantial ‘lubrication’ of the vocal chords, the

congregation set a new WORLD RECORD (for Nelson) of eighteen carols in nine minutes! Thanks to the generosity of Ian Williams (proprietor) and staff, $1,000 was raised for Nelson Women’s and Children’s refuge. My Thanks to all concerned! Steve

Pray for music and musicians Eternal Lord God, source of all beauty and harmony, we praise you for the gift of music: for the inspiration given to those who compose it, for the skill and devotion of those who perform it, for the faculties and powers which enable us to enjoy it; and we pray that as by this gift our lives are enriched and renewed, so we may glorify you in a fuller dedication of ourselves. Guide the team charged to lead the music in our Cathedral giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Working alongside Archbishop Allan Migi, Margaret provides administrative support to one of the youngest Anglican Provinces worldwide. The history of the Dioceses is between 50 and 120 years since the arrival of the missionar-ies. The Church brings HOPE and LIGHT in the midst of a developing nation where literacy and health statistics rank amongst the bottom 4% of the world. This is a country still driven by tribal alliances yet seeking to become relevant on the worldwide stage. To support Margaret: financially or in prayer:

St. Barnabas Prayer Lord Jesus Christ, who prayed on the cross that those who crucified You would be forgiven, teach us and all Your followers how to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us. We want to glorify You by our lives, and to show ourselves the children of our heavenly Father, who causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. We cannot do this in our own strength, dear Lord. So we ask for Your Spirit to be at work in our hearts, moment by moment, giving us the grace to forgive others as our Father forgives us. Genesis 1:1-5 In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a form-less void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day. Acts 19:1-7

While Apollos was in Corinth, Paul passed through the inland regions and came to Ephesus, where he found some disciples. He said to them, ‘Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you became believers?’ They replied, ‘No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.’ Then he said, ‘Into what then were you baptized?’ They an-swered, ‘Into John’s baptism.’ Paul said, ‘John baptized with the baptism of repent-ance, telling the people to believe in the one who was to come after him, that is, in Jesus.’ On hearing this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. When Paul had laid his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke in tongues and prophesied— altogether there were about twelve of them.

Page 7

Mark 1:4-11

John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. Now John was clothed with camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. He proclaimed, ‘The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.’ In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. And a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.

Isaiah 42:1-9

Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. He will not cry or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; a bruised reed he will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. He will not grow faint or be crushed until he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his teaching. Thus says God, the LORD, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it: I am the LORD, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. I am the LORD, that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to idols. See, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth, I tell you of them.

Ephesians 2:1-10

You were dead through the trespasses and sins in which you once lived, following the course of this world, following the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work among those who are disobedient. All of us once lived among them in the passions of our flesh, following the desires of flesh and senses, and we were by nature children of wrath, like everyone else. But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness towards us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God— not the result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are what he has made us, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand to be our way of life.
