WELCOME TO CHRIST CHURCH CATHEDRAL
Children are welcome at our services. There are toys in the Quiet Room.
Please feel free to take this publication away with you.
Dear Cathedralites
My thanks to Fr. Steve and others who will be covering for me today as I am at Freyberg High School in Palmerston North at a reunion for teachers and students who were there in the late seventies. I am going because the three years I spent in the classroom were a brilliant preparation for ordained ministry. I owe my colleagues and students so much for what they taught me. It would be interesting to hear from many of you who have learned from previous jobs, the results of which you are now reaping the benefits of because of an early good preparation and teaching.
We say farewell to Janice and Ray as they head back to England before returning in summer. Janice has been part of the choir and recently has sung a wonderful solo.
Congratulations to the AAW who are celebrating their Golden Jubilee. Yesterday they had a grand service lead by Dean Charles Tyrrell and today they are featuring here in the Cathedral, combining it with Mothering Sunday. AAW have lead the way in the Anglican Church for such a long time, praying for family life. I am sure Roz and others would like more folk to join in the Association of Anglican Women. It’s a wonderful ministry and I am so pleased that our Cathedral branch is relatively strong.
We had another interesting time at our Grow course for Lent with a number of folk coming from various churches as well as the Cathedral. Last week we looked at the four main ingredients needed when leading: a ministry; a home group; coaching a football or netball team. We are thinking of starting earlier, say at 7 pm for the next few weeks of our course. It is still to be decided.
On Thursday morning the Music Committee is getting together to look at the next few months for hymns. If you have a favourite hymn you want us to feature at our 10 am or 5:30 pm Evensong then please ring me direct on 021 711 726 and tell me your favourite. We will try to integrate it into our hymn list.
Next Sunday is exciting as we combine Harvest Festival with our seasonal workers and a baptism all in one. Autumn has suddenly come upon us and we are conscious our gardens having reached their peak, so we empty them out and sell off the harvest and give the money to overseas missions.
The commissioning service of the Bishop elect, Steve Maina, will be taking place here at the Cathedral on August 31st at 9.30 am! Bishop elect Steve told me this week that with such an early start there will be plenty of time for partying afterwards. Wouldn’t that be exciting in the new chapter of this Diocese!

Exodus 2:1-10 1 Now a man from the house of Levi
went and married a Levite
woman. 2 The woman conceived and
bore a son; and when she saw that he
was a fine baby, she hid him for three
months. 3 When she could hide him no
longer she got a papyrus basket for
him, and plastered it with bitumen and
pitch; she put the child in it and placed
it among the reeds on the bank of the
river. 4 His sister stood at a distance,
to see what would happen to
him.5 The daughter of Pharaoh came
down to bathe at the river, while her
attendants walked beside the river.
She saw the basket among the reeds
and sent her maid to bring it. 6 When
she opened it, she saw the child. He
was crying, and she took pity on him.
‘This must be one of the Hebrews’
children,’ she said. 7 Then his sister
said to Pharaoh’s daughter, ‘Shall I go
and get you a nurse from the Hebrew
women to nurse the child for
you?’ 8 Pharaoh’s daughter said to
her, ‘Yes.’ So the girl went and called
the child’s mother. 9 Pharaoh’s
daughter said to her, ‘Take this child
and nurse it for me, and I will give you
your wages.’ So the woman took the
child and nursed it. 10 When the child
grew up, she brought him to
Pharaoh’s daughter, and she took him
as her son. She named him Moses,
‘because’, she said, ‘I drew him out of
the water.’
Colossians 3:12-17
12 As God’s chosen ones, holy and
beloved, clothe yourselves with
compassion, kindness, humility,
meekness, and patience. 13 Bear with
one another and, if anyone has a
complaint against another, forgive
each other; just as the Lord has
forgiven you, so you also must
forgive. 14 Above all, clothe yourselves
with love, which binds everything
together in perfect harmony. 15 And let
the peace of Christ rule in your hearts,
to which indeed you were called in the
one body. And be thankful. 16 Let the
word of Christ dwell in you richly;
teach and admonish one another in all
wisdom; and with gratitude in your
hearts sing psalms, hymns, and
spiritual songs to God. 17 And
whatever you do, in word or deed, do
everything in the name of the Lord
Jesus, giving thanks to God the
Father through him.
5
Luke 2:33-35
33 And the child’s father and mother
were amazed at what was being said
about him. 34 Then Simeon blessed
them and said to his mother Mary,
‘This child is destined for the falling
and the rising of many in Israel, and to
be a sign that will be opposed 35 so
that the inner thoughts of many will be
revealed—and a sword will pierce
your own soul too.
Psalm 30 1. I will exalt you O Lord for you have drawn me up from the depths:
and have not suffered my foes to triumph over me.
2. O Lord my God I cried to you: and you have made me whole.
3. You brought me back O Lord from the land of silence:
you saved my life from among those that go down to the Pit.
4. Sing praises to the Lord all you his faithful ones:
and give thanks to his holy name.
5. For if in his anger is havoc, in his good favour is life:
heaviness may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.
6. In my prosperity I said ‘I shall never be moved:
your goodness O Lord has set me on so firm a hill.’
7. Then you hid your face from me: and I was greatly dismayed.
8. I cried to you O God: and made my petition humbly to my Lord.
9. ‘What profit is there in my blood if I go down to the Pit:
can the dust give you thanks or declare your faithfulness?
10. Hear O Lord and be merciful: O Lord be my helper.’
11. You have turned my lamentations into dancing: you have put off my
sackcloth and girded me with joy,
12. That my heart may sing your praise and never be silent:
O Lord my God I will give thanks to you forever.
6
Isaiah 40:26-31
26 Lift up your eyes on high and see:
Who created these? He who brings
out their host and numbers them,
calling them all by name; because he
is great in strength, mighty in power,
not one is missing. 27 Why do you say,
O Jacob, and speak, O Israel, ‘My way
is hidden from the LORD, and my right
is disregarded by my God’? 28 Have
you not known? Have you not heard?
The LORD is the everlasting God, the
Creator of the ends of the earth. He
does not faint or grow weary; his
understanding is unsearchable. 29 He
gives power to the faint, and
strengthens the powerless. 30 Even
youths will faint and be weary, and the
young will fall exhausted; 31 but those
who wait for the LORD shall renew
their strength, they shall mount up with
wings like eagles, they shall run and
not be weary, they shall walk and not
faint.
2 Timothy 4:1-8
1 In the presence of God and of Christ
Jesus, who is to judge the living and
the dead, and in view of his appearing
and his kingdom, I solemnly urge
you: 2 proclaim the message; be
persistent whether the time is
favourable or unfavourable; convince,
rebuke, and encourage, with the
utmost patience in teaching. 3 For the
time is coming when people will not
put up with sound doctrine, but having
itching ears, they will accumulate for
themselves teachers to suit their own
desires, 4 and will turn away from
listening to the truth and wander away
to myths. 5 As for you, always be
sober, endure suffering, do the work
of an evangelist, carry out your
ministry fully. 6 As for me, I am already
being poured out as a libation, and the
time of my departure has come. 7 I
have fought the good fight, I have
finished the race, I have kept the
faith. 8 From now on there is reserved
for me the crown of righteousness,
which the Lord, the righteous judge,
will give to me on that day, and not
only to me but also to all who have
longed for his appearing.
