• all be seatedFirst Lesson Wisdom of Solomon 3:1-9

The souls of the righteous are in the hand of God,and no torment will ever touch them.In the eyes of the foolish they seemed to have died, and their departure was thought to be a disaster, and their going from us to be their destruction;but they are at peace. For though in the sight of others they were punished, their hope is full of immortality.Having been disciplined a little, they will receive great good, because God tested them and found them worthy of himself;like gold in the furnace he tried them, and like a sacrificial burnt offering he accepted them.In the time of their visitation they will shine forth, and will run like sparks through the stubble. They will govern nations and rule over peoples, and the Lord will reign over them forever. Those who trust in him will understand truth, and the faithful will abide with him in love, because grace and mercy are upon his holy ones, and he watches over his elect.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Psalm 24 • sung by the choir chant by William Crotch

The earth is the LORD’S and all that is in it, * the world and all who dwell therein. For it is he who founded it upon the seas * and made it firm upon the rivers of the deep.“Who can ascend the hill of the LORD? * and who can stand in his holy place?”“Those who have clean hands and a pure heart, * who have not pledged themselves to falsehood, nor sworn by what is a fraud. They shall receive a blessing from the LORD * and a just reward from the God of their salvation.”Such is the generation of those who seek him, * of those who seek your face, O God of Jacob.Lift up your heads, O gates; lift them high, O everlasting doors; * and the King of glory shall come in.

Second Lesson Revelation 21:1-6aI saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, the new

Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying,

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

“Who is this King of glory?” * “The LORD, strong and mighty, the LORD, mighty in battle.”Lift up your heads, O gates; lift them high, O everlasting doors; * and the King of glory shall come in.

“Who is he, this King of glory?” * “The LORD of hosts, he is the King of glory.”

Alleluia Verse • sung by the cantor, then all

“See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them as their God;they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them;he will wipe every tear from their eyes.Death will be no more;mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away.”

And the one who was seated on the throne said, “See, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this, for these

words are trustworthy and true.” Then he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end.”

Gospel John 11:32-44

When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, “Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.” When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. He said, “Where have you laid him?” They said to him, “Lord, come and see.” Jesus began to weep. So the Jews said, “See how he loved him!” But some of them said, “Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying?” Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister

of the dead man, said to him, “Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead four days.” Jesus said to her, “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God?” So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upward and said, “Father, I thank you for having heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me.” When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out!” The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Unbind him, and let him go.”

Renewal of Baptismal Vows • BCP 304

• the people move to the font while singing:

Come, Ye Sinners, Poor and Needy

• after the renewal of baptismal vows, the priest chants the Vidi Aquam as the people are sprinkled with holy water and as the chancel party and people processes back into the nave. The words are meant to remind us of our Baptism: “I saw water, proceeding out of the Temple from the right side thereof;

and all to whom that water came shall be saved”

Do you reaffirm your renunciation of evil and renew your commitment to Jesus Christ? I do

Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

Will you continue in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? I will, with God’s help.

Will you persevere in resisting evil, and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? I will, with God’s help.

Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ? I will, with God’s help.

Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbor as yourself? I will, with God’s help.

Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being? I will, with God’s help.

Prayer after Communion

• all stand

Almighty and everliving God, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the Body of your Son, and heirs of your eternal kingdom. And now, Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen.

Blessing

Today’s music is dedicated to the Glory of God and in honor of Jack and Patti Dunn, donors of the new Wissinger organ, which is being heard in public for the first time today. Today’s

anthem, chosen for the feast of All Saints’, is especially appropriate for this occasion as we truly move into new opportunities and new possibilities with this beautiful new instrument.

For all the saintsFor all the saints, who from their labors rest, who thee by faith before the world confessed, thy Name, O Jesus, be forever blessed.Alleluia, Alleluia!

Thou wast their Rock, their Fortress and their Might;thou, Lord, their Captain in the well fought fight;thou, in the darkness drear, their one true Light.Alleluia, Alleluia!

O may thy soldiers, faithful, true, and bold, fight as the saints who nobly fought of old,and win, with them, the victor’s crown of gold.Alleluia, Alleluia!

O blest communion, fellowship divine! We feebly struggle, they in glory shine;yet all are one in thee, for all are thine.Alleluia, Alleluia!

And when the strife is fierce, the warfare long, steals on the ear the distant triumph song, and hearts are brave, again, and arms are strong.Alleluia, Alleluia!

But lo! there breaks a yet more glorious day;the saints triumphant rise in bright array;the King of glory passes on his way.Alleluia, Alleluia!

God is the Giver. The Feast of All Saints’ is a day to honor and remember all who have gone before us, who have, by their lives,

inspired us to be better. However, at the root of this day (and every day) is this truth: being saints is not based on what we do, but on what God has done and is always doing for us. God is always the giver—what varies is how we respond.

Today begins our annual 4-week Season of Stewardship. Our theme is: God the Giver. Take this time to reflect upon how you will faithfully respond to what has been given to you. This week you will receive a letter and a Pledge Card. Prayerfully consider what you will give in response to God’s gifts and in support of ministry at Christ Church Cathedral. You may return your completed card by mail, or bring it to church any Sunday, or place it in the bowl on In-Gathering Sunday, November 22.

In addition to beginning our Season of Stewardship, today:

• We are relieved at the safe settling of our Syrian refugee family, and grateful for the hard work of Page Curry and her team to make that happen • We pray for our national church at the installation of the Rt. Rev’d Michael Curry as our new Presiding Bishop • We rejoice in the sound and service of our new organ, and give thanks for the generosity of Jack and Patti Dunn for that gift • We gather an All Saints’ Day Offering for the support of All Saints’ Conference Center

We also gather after 10:30 worship, for the first of 3 SACRED CONVERSATIONS. In these weeks, we will look ahead to our life together at the Cathedral in 2016. We will: talk about our mission, home in on our vision, and create a strategy filter to keep our ministry on track. In SACRED CONVERSATION everyone can speak, listen, and learn. We will get to know one another and grow stronger as a community of faith. And it’s fun! Join us for any or all of the Sundays—today, November 8 and 15, in Bishops’ Hall. We will be finished by 1.

As you prepare for worship today, ponder these words of Donald S. Armentrout:

We are the communion of saints not because of how we live or what we do, but because of what God has done for us ... As Christians we are not called to ... a pious life, but ... to belong to God.

I am glad that you are here today.Faithfully,The Very Reverend Joan Pritcher Your Dean in the Interim On this Feast of All Saints

New organ in use today.Today our new pipe organ is being used for worship. Having connected with Canon Bozeman through Hal Gober, the builder of our current instrument, Jack and Patti Dunn of Jackson, New Hampshire have graciously offered the organ to the Cathedral as a gift, knowing it will be well used and fully appreciated. Built by Darron Wissinger in 2005 for the Dunn’s residence, the organ is 14-stops, twice the size of the Gober Chancel Organ, with a larger and more

Cathedral String Orchestra and Cathedral Choir present a concert and evensong in memory of Thomas Hunter, Sunday, November 8, 5:00 PMPlease join us as for a special concert and evensong with the Cathedral String Orchestra performing Sonata in D by W.A. Mozart, Fratres by Arvo Pärt, and Concerto Grosso op. 3 No. 11 by Francesco Manfredini. The Cathedral Choir sings evensong, featuring responses by Craig Phillips, Magnificat and Nunc dimittis in G by Charles Stanford, and anthems Ave Verum Corpus and Laudate Dominum by Mozart. This will be the first concert and evensong using the newly installed Wissinger organ, donated by Jack and Patti Dunn of Jackson, New Hampshire. Canon Dr. Robert L. Bozeman conducts and Paul Weber is guest organist. This concert and evensong are made possible by donations given in memory of Thomas Hunter, long time chorister and cathedral member who died in March of this year. A retired Lutheran pastor, Tom was an advocate for the Cathedral Arts series, serving on the board as well as being a choir officer. He and his husband Jerry, who continues as a board member and chorister, helped to shape the series into what it is now, a monthly series of concerts and evensongs with additional seasonal liturgies such as Lessons and Carols. It is an honor to remember Tom’s work in this concert and all those who tirelessly support the efforts of sacred music...saints on earth as well as in heaven.

Laundry LoveOur Laundry Love launch was a success—thanks to Dorothy Converse, Jane Halliday and Mildred Payne who volunteered (along with Canon Lewis, Deacon Dru Kemp and other members of the Laundry Love team). Plan to be part of a future opportunity. Laundry Love happens every 3rd Thursday, 6-8 p.m. at Aunt Bee’s Laundromat, 2nd and Ormsby. Laundry Love is a national outreach program that provides assistance to individuals and families that do not have washers/driers or cannot afford to add expensive laundry costs to their budget. This project has been underwritten, so your participation will not require money—just your presence. Let Dean Pritcher or Mike DaRiff know if you’re interested in being part of this Diocesan Urban Ministry initiative.

Why do we pray, study, work, listen and build?Benedict, the father of Benedictine spirituality, suggested that our life is best balanced between prayer, study, and work. We have taken that challenge as the basis of our common life together at Christ Church Cathedral: We pray (worship and the arts). We study (spiritual formation). We work (service to others). In addition, we know that we are sustained by our life together, and that works best when we listen to one another. We also aim to build and maintain a structure that will support all of our ministry efforts. And so: We listen (cathedral life and fellowship), We build (administration). In Cathedral Matters, you will find information about ministry opportunities at the Cathedral which fit into all five of these areas. Under each of the five main categories you will see what is new to the listing for this week. You will notice that some paragraphs repeat weekly, so that our guests won’t miss any news. You are urged to take your Cathedral Matters home with you so that you will have it for ready reference. Now, read about our ministry, think about how you would like to be involved...and jump right in!
