A ‘Wild’ First Breeders’ Cup... By the 1980s, the star power in the seats atHollywood Park had been pretty much reduced to anaging Ed McMahon,Vince Edwards in arumpled brown suit, andthose indefatigablehandicappers, Dick VanPatten and Mel Brooks. But for one day, theinaugural running of theBreeders' Cup in 1984,the CEO Marje Everettcalled in a few markersand rustled up enoughA-list celebrities for areprise of the Good OldDays. Midway throughthe card, I bumped intoNeil Papiano, the track'slegal counsel. "I've neverseen anything like it," hesaid. "I just got finished escorting Elizabeth Taylor tothe winner's circle for the presentation. When thecrowd saw her, they parted like the Red Sea." When the overnight sheet came out, Roger Laurin, trainer of Chief's Crown, looked at the entries and said: "My horse is in the first half of the Daily Double. Canyou beat that?" (Chief's Crown would win theJuvenile).

As it should be, the best was saved for last. WildAgain, Gate Dancer and Slew o= Gold tried hammeringone another into submission in the Classic, in the mostrip-roaring finish to any horse race, anytime, anywhere. Pat Day, with marching orders to avoid the whip, keptthe stick to himself and rode Wild Again to animprobable win. His cagey owners had put up$360,000 in supplemental money just to make theirhorse eligible, causing Mickey Taylor, one of theowners of Slew o' Gold, to say before the race: "Man,all that money for a 30-1 shot? Those guys are what'sknown as dead game." The Wild Again crowd, known as Black Chip Stable, was cocksure to a man. Hours before the race, in ahotel room along Century Boulevard, Bill Allen's futurewife Nina stepped out of the bathroom dressed to the9s and asked Allen how she looked. "Perfect," Allen said. "You're very pretty. But there'sone thing." "What?" she said. "The purse," Allen said. "It's notbig enough. It's not big enough to hold all the moneywe're going to win out there today." Incredibly, the supplemental fee for Wild Again wasonly part of the gamble. His owners bet with bothhands at the track and in Las Vegas, where they wereyet to commingle the pools. Vincent Timphony, WildAgain's trainer and a part owner, went to his gravewithout saying how much they collected, but therehave been reports that it might have approached the$1.35-million purse that their horse won. Ron Volkman, another of the owners, was delegatedto count and distribute the on-track winnings. He wentinto a stall in one of the men's rooms to sort out theswag. "I was shaking so bad, I was lucky the whole thingdidn't fall into the toilet," Volkman said. Wild Again's dramatic win was not without a10-minute stewards' inquiry. When they decided toleave Wild Again's number up, but disqualify GateDancer from second to third place, the owners of bothGate Dancer and Slew o' Gold soured. They planned toappeal the outcome to the state racing board, and thecivil courts if necessary. The morning after the race, thestewards called a hearing and invited all parties. Areporter asked Marje Everett if the press would be ableto sit in. "Hollywood Park has no secrets," she said. The hearing lasted 45 minutes. The stewards werePete Pedersen and the retired jockeys Alfred Shelhamerand Hubert Jones. They had already earned their paythe day before, disqualifying a filly owned by EarlScheib in the second Breeders' Cup race ever run. Coincidentally, Scheib, who painted cars to pay for hisracing stable, had bought time on NBC for a 30-secondspot that ran shortly after the disqualification wasannounced. Scheib was the pitchman in his owncommercials ("No ups and no extras"). "You can't imagine," he said later, "how many peoplecalled to say how composed I was on the commercial, considering I hadjust had amillion-dollar racetaken away fromme. Hell, did theythink I did thosedamn things live?" Wisely, thestewards tappedBill Hartack, theHall of Famejockey, to run theprotest hearing.Hartack, a minorofficial at the track, was adept atbreaking down racefilm. It was thesmartest thing thestewards ever did.Hartack took theprincipals throughthe stretch run ofthe race, in real time and slow motion, analyzing whatthe three jockeys--Day, Laffit Pincay on Gate Dancerand Angel Cordero on Slew o' Gold--were doing andthinking. When it was over, the appeals were dropped."I still don't like it," one of the owners said as the roomcleared, "but the way [Hartack] laid it out, I'll go alongwith it." Hartack was the unsung hero. Without hisexpertise, the result of the first Breeders' Cup's richestrace might have meandered through the courts foryears. Cont. p5

Taking the Shoe Off... The fall of 1982, my first year on the racing beat,Hollywood Park ran the Matriarch S. for the secondtime. It was split into divisions, and the second halfwas won by Castilla, a 3-year-old filly owned by MaryBradley, the shoe heiress. Nat Wess, the publicitydirector at the track, lined up Gordon Jones, turf writerfor the old Los Angeles Herald-Examiner, to make thetrophy presentation in the winner's circle. "If that man comes in here, I'm walking out," Bradleysaid to Wess. The Bradley-Jones feud was nine years old, dating to1973, when Bradley's Cougar II ran in the HollywoodGold Cup. Bradley thought Bill Shoemaker had riddenher horse poorly in a prep race and asked CharlieWhittingham, her trainer, to replace him with LaffitPincay. In the days leading up to the race, the criticismof Bradley was relentless, especially in theHerald-Examiner. A headline over one of Jones' storiesread: "Florsheim Heiress Gives Shoe the Boot." Whittingham horses ran 1-2-3, with the castoffShoemaker winning the race aboard Kennedy Road.Quack was second and Cougar II ran third. Jones tookone more shot at Bradley in the next day's paper, andthey never spoke again. In the Matriarch winner'scircle, Wess explained to Jones that his servicesweren't needed, and out of desperation he turned tome. I was waiting for post-race interviews, and alsotrying to catch a couple of jockeys on the fly, sincethere had been a foul claim against the winner.

"I got nobody else," Wess pleaded, and I put awaymy note pad and handed Bradley her trophy. It was thestart of a long friendship, and she even sought myadvice for acceptance speech material when Cougar IIwas inducted into the Racing Hall of Fame. I also likedGordon Jones, however, and along the way I tried invain to get Bradley to give up her grudge. "It's been years, Mary," I said sometime in the1990s, when Gordon Jones' name came up. "Letbygones be bygones." "That week that Cougar ran, it was every day, dayafter day," she said. "He wouldn't let up." "But there are statutes of limitations," I said. "Whatdo you suggest? Capital punishment?" "Well," she said, "a public hanging would be nice."

The Brawl... One of the oddest things I ever wrote aboutHollywood Park came on a day when I wasn't evenassigned to cover the track. It was a story about apublic brawl, not a horse race. It was 1989, and there was a no-holds-barred proxyfight between Marje Everett and a group headed byR.D. Hubbard, a quarter-horse man who was trying tobroaden his base. In the directors' room on a Sundayafternoon were John Forsythe, the actor, who was anEverett supporter and a member of her board; andHarry Ornest, a major Hollywood Park stockholder whowas an ally of Hubbard's. Cont. p6

Ornest thought that Forsythe had too muchinfluence, considering that he owned only a smallamount of stock. The two of them began jawing aboutEverett vs. Hubbard, and after a while the heatedconversation escalated into a shoving and pushingmatch. Everett was unsuccessful in separating thecombatants, and MauryOrnest, one of Ornest'ssons, joined in the scuffle. Relaxing at home, I wastipped off about theincident. I got lucky onthe phone, and found afew eyewitnesses. Everettdeclined to comment, andwhile I couldn't reachOrnest, I was able to findForsythe, who wassheepish about thematter. He was 72 andOrnest was 67. "We acted like a coupleof little boys," Forsythesaid. "I've got somescratches on my head and my neck, but it's no bigdeal. The whole thing lasted about a tenth of a round. It was embarrassing, really, and reflects poorly on horseracing." At one point, an eyewitness said, Everett tried toprevent Maury Ornest from jumping in. "You can't go in," Everett shouted. "You can't keep me out," Maury Ornest said. Hubbard's overthrow was successful. By 1991,Everett was out and Hubbard was running the track.

Frankel-y Speaking... The year 1990 was also when Bobby Frankel, afuture Hall of Fame trainer, ran Pendleton Ridge, amaiden, in the Kentucky Derby. Every time I visited theplatform viewing stand on the Hollywood Parkbackstretch, I thought of Frankel, who won 952 racesat Hollywood, more than anybody. Running a maiden in the Derby was not this cannytrainer's style. I decided to have some fun with thestory. I only mentioned Pendleton Ridge by name once.

Every other time I called him "The Maiden," becausethat's what everyone on the Churchill Downsbackstretch was calling him. My story was a feeble attempt at aping Jim Murray,The Times' Pulitzer Prize-winning writer whose wrycolumns were half wisecracks, half insight. Back in LosAngeles, Bruce McNall, who owned Pendleton Ridge, read my story and called Frankel. "You sure we should be there with this horse?"McNall said. "I don't want to comeoff being the laughingstock, andthat's what it sounds like, based onwhat Christine wrote." Usually it works the other wayaround--the owner wants to run, butthe trainer doesn't. With PendletonRidge, Frankel thought he had a shotand McNall's confidence was oozingaway by the minute. By the morningof the post-position draw, Frankelwas seething. He spotted me in thecrowd, came over and gave me bothbarrels. "I don't know what you wrote," he said--and I'momitting the billingsgate--"but you got my owner allover my tail. He's trying to get me to scratch the horse. You're a disgrace. Leave the training of the horse tome, will ya?" The operative words are "I don't know what youwrote." Frankel hadn't read the story, and I'm not reallysure that McNall had, either. I thought it was low onridicule, and a balanced analysis of Pendleton Ridge'schances. Pendleton Ridge ran 13th behind Unbridled. The next week, I was back at Hollywood Park, andone morning, while interviewing Ron McAnally on thewooden stand where some of the trainers go to watchworkouts, I saw Frankel coming. Uh-oh. I figured thatthere wasn't much left of me to chew out afterLouisville, but he was going to try. "I owe you an apology," Frankel said. "I was allwrong back there, and I'm sorry. I got home and readthe full story, and it wasn't as bad [as McNall said itwas]. What can I say? I was wrong and I'm sorry."Cont. p7

After that, Frankel became one of my best sources. He had a reputation of not suffering fools gladly, but healways returned phone calls, and went out of his wayto give me the time of day. I reasoned that he felt heowed me one, to compensate for his public blowup atChurchill Downs. Hollywood Park, closing for good today after 75years, announced that it's going to auction off a lot ofthings in January. I wonder if that backstretch platformwill be included in the consignment. It might go cheap. One man's kindling is another man's treasure.

Bill Christine is a retired two-time Eclipse Award-winning turf writer who covered the sport for 24 yearsfor the Los Angeles Times. He covered every TripleCrown race from 1982 through 2005. Mr. Christinewas part of a Times team that won a Pulitzer Prize in1995 for its coverage of the Northridge earthquake theyear before. Mr. Christine also covered a variety ofsports for newspapers in East St. Louis, Baltimore,Louisville, Chicago and Pittsburgh, where he was sportseditor at the Post-Gazette for a time.

FAREWELL TO HOLLYWOODAron Wellman, Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners In its greatest glory, Hollywood Park, as a sportingvenue, had the ability to transcend sport. For three-quarters of a century, Hollywood Park provided thebackdrop for unparalleled drama. Every variety of star imaginable, equine and humanalike, roamed the site in style. Countless championsgraced the Hollywood oval, both on sand and sod. Thefinest jockeys to ever glare through a Thoroughbred=sears and the most gifted trainers to ever tighten thegirth on a racehorse used the Inglewood setting as theirhome stage. Famous Americans, from movie stars to titans ofindustry, thumbed through the same Daily Racing Formin the Directors= Room, as did the salt of the earthpatrons on the track apron, both of whom stood in linesto fling their hard-earned buck into the same pari-mutuel pool. Hollywood Park, like most racetracks, was capable ofserving as the ultimate socio-economic equalizer. Whatthe track of the lakes and flowers has meant to theindustry on a local, state, national and a global levelcannot be underestimated.

But, as they say, that=s turf history. On Sunday, December 22nd, 2013, the curtain willdrop and Hollywood Park will take its final bow.As the track=s final act segues to its closing scenes, anyone who has experienced Hollywood Park cannothelp but find themselves in a trance, rewinding timeand replaying events, both vivid and vague, which tookplace at the grand venue. While I can=t claim to be a true Aold-timer,@ for this36-year-old, the memories are broad and deep. Dozensand dozens of scenes have rifled through my mind inrecent weeks as I=ve been overcome by pure emotionalnostalgia. And, what I cannot help but relate to each re-run,whether glorious or heartbreaking, is that it is thepeople who I was surrounded by at that very moment, who are most vibrant in my memory. When I won myfirst graded stakes race as an owner, it was theembrace with my mother as the filly crossed the wirethat I remember so well. When I made my first majorscore at the betting windows, it was the sting of theAhigh five@ I gave my father that I can still feel in mypalm. When my pride and joy mare suffered a fatalinjury on the Hollywood lawn, it is the fabric of mybrother=s blazer which I recall crying into. When I sat with Bill Shoemaker, my lifelong mentorand friend, when he had his first win as a trainer, I canstill see the wink and smirk he gave me as we glideddown to the winners= circle and an eerily similar winkand smirk from my other lifelong mentor and friend,Eddie Delahoussaye, as he dismounted the victoriousfilly. The memories I have of Hollywood Park as ahorseman, a bettor and simply as a horse racing fan,are endless. In an attempt to unveil some semblance of a silverlining from the supremely traumatic blow that the deathof Hollywood Park is to the industry, it is the commondenominator of each of my memories from which Ibelieve I have learned my lesson, and hopefully a lessonwhich can be learned by the industry as well. In an era where our industry and all the factionsassociated with the industry are scrambling to find theanswer to the question: How do we attract new peopleto our racetracks?...there is but one tried and truemethod: Nepotism. The only foolproof way to breed continuousgenerations of Thoroughbred horse owners andbreeders and bettors, is through family. Every recountof memories of Hollywood Park that has beenpublished, whether it be in major industry trades frompersons of stature or from the blue collar fan on amessage board, is that he or she was first introduced tothe track, whether Hollywood Park or any other track inthe country, by a family member. Whether a mother, a father, an aunt or uncle, grandfather or grandmother, most people who supportthe game were introduced to this wonderful andwhacky world by a blood relative. So, while marketingexperts and consulting companies bill out our racingorganizations and racetracks hundreds of thousands, ifnot millions of dollars to provide them with informationthat clearly isn=t working, the only method which is acan=t-miss is to cater to families already caught in ourweb. I can=t help but think that Hollywood Park=s deathwas a preventable one and that had we simply caressedthe hands that fed us, rather than biting them, that thehistoric venue would still be alive and well today. Instead, as is the rule rather than the exception intoday=s racetrack operating environment, the customerhas been used and abused. Had we cared for the families who walked throughthose turnstiles week in and week out, there would beno generation gap to try to fill in for the industry. Thefamilies would breed the next generation of owner, breeder or bettor and provide the industry with aconstant flow of consumers. So, while I agree thatcutting edge technology is an absolute must to dragThoroughbred horse racing from the Dark Age to the21st century, gimmick promotions like giveaways andconcerts and food trucks simply aren=t cutting it. How about instead of constantly thinking the grass isalways greener on the other side, we adopt a grassroots approach by mending ties with the families whoused to flood aprons and infields every weekend of theyear? How about rewarding adults who bring a childunder the age of 18 to the racetrack? While freeadmission and parking should be, but won=t ever beimplemented, all kids under a certain age should gainentry to the park for free, as should any adult whobrings that child with them. And, toss in a freeprogram, hot dog, soda, a $5-betting voucher and apaddock visit to a designated race with a trackemployee properly trained in customer service.Perhaps we can resuscitate some of the patrons we=velost along the way, lure some fresh blood into thegrandstand and perpetuate and, in turn, grow the fanbase at a low cost that churns out a high reward. So, as the funeral approaches and the industryprepares to lay Hollywood Park to rest, it is importantto reflect on the life that was and the good times had,but it would be irresponsible of us not to take someresponsibility and seek ways to roll up our sleeves, goback to basics and see to it that this doesn=t everhappen again. After all, we have lost a member of our family...

WILLIAM KOESTER Some additional thoughts to Barry Irwin=s spot onop/ed letter (click here) to the track vets. This past year, it was stated that in a major racingstate, the average horse, between entry and going tothe starting gate was getting an average of 5 1/2injections, and that was before it gets its Lasix shot.Think about the math here, that=s 572 injections for anaverage day of racing at one track. I would think thatthe needle, syringe, and drug sales people are having aMerry Christmas considering that there are about45,000 races run at the Thoroughbred tracks during theyear. Now everyone being called a vet takes an oath, andjust for a refresher this is what vets swear to: Being admitted to the profession of veterinarymedicine, I solemnly swear to use my scientificknowledge and skills for the benefit of society throughthe protection of animal health and welfare, theprevention of and relief of animal suffering, theconservation of animal resources, the promotion ofpublic health, and the advancement of medicalknowledge. I will practice my profession conscientiously withdignity, and in keeping with the principles of veterinarymedical ethics. I accept as a lifelong obligation thecontinual improvement of my knowledge andcompetence. It has always troubled me that anyone passing atrainer=s test one day, can tell a well-educated vet thenext day to administer drugs to a horse, and the vetwill do it. Claiming horses have been injected in all theirjoints, the horse is claimed, and the vet will do it allover again for another trainer. As long as you are agood pay, the vet is a good enabler. Really, does thehorse come first, or does the money come first, and weall know the answer to that. Imagine an everyday vet telling a trainer what=s bestfor the horse is to be turned out for three to sixmonths. Of course the vet, the trainer, and the ownermake no money with the horse turned out and this onlyhappens at the top level, and the top level is a verysmall part of horse racing. Owners, trainers, and vets all profess their love fortheir horses, and it makes for a great sound bite, butwe all know in most cases, it=s all about their love forthe money.

STEVE SHAHINIAN I share Barry Irwin=s frustration, and agree that theindustry could do a better job of catching andeliminating the cheaters from the game, but I am lessconcerned with the reputation of veterinarians and/orillegal pre-race medications, and more concerned abouta system that results in the vast majority of racehorsesbeing legally over-medicated. If, as Mr. Irwin suggests, track veterinarians shifted the focus of their practicetoward charging fees for diagnostic services, severalbenefits would accrue. Today a racetrack veterinarianhas a conflict. Medicating is the only way to get paid, and a lack of a clear diagnosis often means a shotgunapproach to medicating, and when the shotgun curefades over time, no one knows what actually workedlast time, so it=s right back to the shotgun approach. That may be good for the veterinarian=s bottom line, butit=s less than ideal for the horse. Simply stated, thecurrent system creates an economic disincentive fromperforming in-depth and time-consuming diagnostics. Moreover, most medications, particularly thosedelivered through a syringe, come with some risk.Hyaluronic acid enjoys a favorable reputation in thebusiness, but invading any joint capsule comes withrisks, including infection of the injected joint, and theaddition of Ajust a dollop@ of corticosteroids to eachhyaluronic acid may or may not be beneficial dependingupon the condition of the invaded joint. Even a simplebute shot that accidentally punctures the jugular veinand deposits a couple of drops of bute adjacent to thenerve that sits right behind it can result in partial orcomplete paralysis of the larynx. Finally, I am convinced that legal permissiblemedications contribute to the catastophic Aaccidents@that occur too often in races. Do we really approve ofinjecting corticosteroids into joints just so the horse, not feeling the pain, will try harder in the next race? I=ve yet to meet the person that=s in the racehorsegame because of the likelihood of making vast sums ofmoney. Most of us are in it because we love thehorses. This is an expensive game, and even moreexpensive to play it the right way. The horses don=thave a voice, and we who profess to love them owe itto the object of our love to cooperate with each otherto do better.

When trainer Todd Beattie deems one good enoughto ship into New York from the Keystone State, it’s agood idea to pay attention. Beattie, who is winningwith 26% of his starters in 2013, is perhaps bestknown for having orchestrated the career of theoutstanding sprinter Fabulous Strike (Smart Strike),who won 12 black-type events, seven of which cameon this circuit, including the 2007 GI Vosburgh S. and2008 Gravesend H., when it was contested as a GradeIII. Along with his sister Holly Ross, her husband BrianRoss and Pennsylvania HBPA Executive Director ToddMostoller , Beattie went to $90,000 to acquire thisClaiborne Farm-consigned filly atlast year’s Keeneland Septembersale. “She had everything,” Beattiecommented. “She was good-sized--not overly big, but also not toosmall--she had a great walk on herand an enormous heart scan.” Sentinto serious training in late August,Taris registered no fewer thanseven workouts at Penn Nationalthat ranked as the best on themorning, but the New York faithfulwent head-over-heels for WorldlyCharm (Malibu Moon), leaving Tarisa dime shy of 4-1 on the tote.Away fairly beneath Clinton Potts, Taris fired throughat the fence to take up the running from D' KennesawCat (Wildcat Heir) before the field had reached the turn. While favored Worldly Charm (Malibu Moon) was forcedto do it tough while three or four deep on the track,Taris readily turned back that one's bid in upper stretchand sailed home to score by a highly impressive 11 3/4lengths. Hey Kiddo (Stonesider) rallied up the fence tocomplete a Pennsylvania-bred exacta. The winner's finaltime was just 0.38 seconds slower than that recordedby Extrasexyhippzster in the Don Rickles S. earlier onthe card. “We were hoping she’d run like that, but younever know, especially when you bring something intoNew York,” stated Beattie, who suggested that this tripis well short of the filly’s optimum. “We are thinkinglong with her,” he offered. “She obviously trained greatat home and it has really been just a pleasant surpriseto see how quick she has been. But we definitely thinkshe’ll stretch out and we’re very excited about that.”Two-turn races such as the Busanda S. and the BusherS. loom--both won last year by Princess of Sylmar(Majestic Warrior)--but Beattie is taking a wait-and-seeapproach.

“We’re just going to unwind and let the dust settlebefore we make any decisions about what’s next,” hecommented. In addition to Beattie and Mostoller, formerPennsylvania HBPA President Joe Santanna is aprinciple in Commonwealth New Era Racing. Beattiereports there are seven partners in Taris.
