FREE COOLING During summer, the chiller operates in the full-flow system (Fig. 1). Duringspring, fall and night operation partiallybypassing the chiller provides maximumenergy saving (Fig. 2).

Bypassing the chiller and cooling thespace by ambient air directly, or via aplate heat exchanger interchanger, cangive a major reduction in chiller energyconsumption during winter (Fig. 3).

With sea, river or lake water an inter-changer can be used to cool liquidcooled air units directly, bypassing the chiller fully and partially (Fig. 4).

Using Alfa Laval software, combinationsof refrigerant heat exchangers andcoolers can be selected to provideoptimum solutions for indirect coolingsystems and free cooling.

Examples of combinations of air andliquid coolers and their applications inindirect cooling systems:

Indirect cooling, high temperature side• Air cooled liquid coolers – PHE or

S&T condenser.

• PHE water cooler, cooled by rawwater – PHE or S&T condenser.

Indirect cooling, low temperature side • PHE or S&T evaporator cooling brine

– brine cooled air coolers.

Free cooling• Water-cooled air coolers – plate

interchanger cooling the water by rawwater*.

• Air-cooled glycol/water cooler – plateinterchanger cooling the water by theglycol/water.

*Raw water: Foulant and/or corrosive water,

e.g. sea, river, lake and cooling tower water.

HEAT RECOVERYIndirect systems allow heat to berecovered from the condensers. Hotwater from PHE condensers can beused for floor heating, boiler feedpreheating, or direct air heating.

Alfa Laval PHE´s and S&T’s are utilizedfor refrigerant de-superheating whererecovered heat is accumulated andused as tap water.

De-superheating and condensation canbe handled by one heat exchangerwith two water circuits – an efficientsolution for compact and low chargeplant layouts.

Booster compression in a cascadearrangement can provide hot waterfrom a high pressure condenser. Herewater can be heated to 72°C byammonia at 40 bar condensation. Inheat pump applications of this type,Alfa Laval all-welded PHE´s providecascade heat transfer and serve ascondensers.

We have the tools to assist youAlfa Laval is happy to supplycustomized specifications for heatexchangers. We have the tools to helpyou design environmentally friendlysystems with optimum C.O.P.
