2.1.TERMS AND SYMBOLS USED IN INSTRUCTIONS

Safety is a combination of operator com-mon sense and alertness at all timeswhen the machine is being operated orserviced.

Thismessage is used for general remind-ers of good safety practices or to directattention to unsafe practices. The mes-sagewill appear in your operator’smanu-al and/or the sign will appear on the ma-chine with the color combination of yel-low and black.

CAUTION!

This message denotes a specific poten-tial hazard. The sign will be displayed onthe machine in areas of potential hazard.The sign will have the color combinationof yellow and black.

WARNING!

This message denotes the most seriousspecific potential hazard. The sign will bedisplayed on the machine in areas of po-tential hazard.

DANGER!

3.GENERAL SAFETY

IMPORTANT! Do not operate this machine until you have read andunderstood the manual page by page.The owner of this machine is responsible forinstructing all operators and support personnel in theoperation and safety precautions of this chipper.Proper training prior to operating the chipper isobligatory.

DDDD Informeveryonewhoworks with the chipper about the risks and how they canavoid accidents.

DDDD Before the chipper is running, ensure that the working place is clear of any by-stander within a minimum risk zone of 50 ft. (15 meter).

DDDD Do not let children or untrained persons operate the chipper.DDDD Always have the chipper mounted on the 3--point hitch of the tractor. Other-

wise the chipper will tip over.DDDD There is a serious crushing hazard between tractor and chipper. Do not go be-

tween the tractor and the chipper in any case, for example when you aremounting the chipper to the tractor.

DDDD Check that the covers of the universal shaft are in their place and the ransmis-sion chains are fastened.

DDDD Safety goggles, earmuffs and a hard hat are obligatory when chipping. Userespirator mask, if necessary.

DDDD Do not wear loose clothing, loose sleeves, scarves or long uncovered hairaround moving parts of machinery. Also avoid gloves of poor condition orwith loose fitting, because they might get caught in the branches.

DDDD Stay alert! Do not operate the chipper when fatigued, or under the influence ofalcohol or drugs.

DDDD IMPORTANT! Never leave the chipper running and unattended.DDDD IMPORTANT! Failure to obey the warnings on the chipper or in the operator’s

manual will result in personal injury and / or death and / or equipment dam-age.

DDDD Check the material before you feed it. The material must be free from nails,stones and all other materials that are not wood, paper or plastic. IMPOR-TANT! Feeding wire and barbed wire into the chipper is very dangerous as itmight pull in the operator.

DDDD Make sure that no one is in the path of flying chips. Point the discharge pipeaway fromwindows, doorways and other areas where people or animals maybe.

DDDD Keep the work area clean so there is nothing to trip over.

DDDD Disengage the PTO, cut the engine and remove the keys before any mainte-nance.

DDDD Useonlyoriginal parts replacements. IMPORTANT!Do notmake anymodifica-tions.

DDDD Check all moving parts. They should be fastened in place, in good workingcondition and all shields and guards must be in place.

DDDD Point the discharge downwind to prevent dust or chips from blowing ontothe operator.

DDDD If a wood jams inside the chipper, cut the engine and wait for all movementsto stop before reaching inside the feed chute.

DDDD Do not use the chipper indoors when you use it with a the tractor or with theseparate hydraulic motor. It’s possible to use the chipper indoors with theelectric motor use.

DDDD Youmust be very careful when working indoors. Protect yourself against pos-sible hazards like exhaust gas by sufficient ventilation, for dust that can catchfire by cleaning your environment regularly.

DDDD Always use the lock bolt before and during maintenance on the machine.DDDD Place the PTO shaft in the holding device when disconnected from tractor.

3.1.ROTATING KNIVES

Risk of cutting injury or hits by flying debris.Do not reach into the feed chute for any reason.Failure to follow these instructions could result in seriousinjury or death.Danger!

3.2.SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE HYDRAULIC FEEDER AND FEED CHUTEDDDD IMPORTANT! Always also read the general safety instructions.DDDD IMPORTANT! Do not ever put any part of your body inside the feed chute!DDDD Prior to operating get familiar with the function and controls of the machine.All functions must be in blameless condition.

DDDD Test the stop function.DDDD Before starting up, check that there is no debris or foreign objects in thefeed chute.

DDDD Do not work in front of the feed chute opening! Stand on the left side of thechute when feeding, as the feed roller might jerk the wood up or to the right.

DDDD When checking malfunction, all controls must be in ”off” or in ”stop” posi-tion.

DDDD Let go of the wood when the feed roller or the knives get hold of it. To feedshort pieces, push them in with longer ones.

3.3.SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE HYDRAULIC UNITDDDD Before performing lubrication work on any equipment, consult the manufac-turer’s instruction manual and follow the recommended procedures.

DDDD Before lubricating the machine, shut down the engine and stop the ma-chine.

DDDD Pressurized oil can be hazardous. Pressurized oil jet can penetrate skin andcause serious injuries or death.

DDDD Occasional skin exposure with oil is not dangerous. If though you can notprevent long---time exposure use protective gloves and other protectiveclothing.

DDDD Keep flammable material away from heat, sparks and open fire.DDDD Hot oil and oil spray can be hazardous. Small amounts swallowed or inhaleddo not usually cause toxication. Old oil is more dangerous than new.

DDDD If oil has got into eyes flush them with cool water after which go to doctor.Use safety goggles.

DDDD Avoid mixing lubricants of different grade and quality. Use only recom-mended oils or oils with corresponding characters.

3.4.SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE SEPARATE HYDRAULIC MOTOR USE

DDDD Check the moving parts. They should be fastened in place, in good workingcondition and all shields and guards must be in place.

DDDD Informeveryonewhoworks with the chipper about the risks and how they canavoid accidents.

DDDD Donot let childrenor incapablepersonsoperate the chipper.Donotwear looseclothing, loose sleeves, neckties or long uncovered hair aroundmoving partsof machinery.

4.CHIPPER PRESENTATION

4.1. FIELD OF APPLICATIONCH140 is a multi purpose chipper for processing small ---sized wood up to Ø 6,3” (160mm). It producesuniform chips to be used as fuel. CH140 is amobile, light---weightmachine for handling all kinds ofwoodwaste fromparks, roadsides and other environmental cleaning. The chipper canbe fittedwith a separatehydraulic power feed.

5.TRAFFIC ON PUBLIC ROADS

IMPORTANT! Prior to every procedurealways recall the generalsafety instructions given inchapter 3.

Follow these special instructions toavoid risks of accidents. Otherwise themanufacturer or retailer will notassume any liability for damage.

You shall have full control of the unit inevery situation when driving.

Bumpy driving might damage thechipper / the feeding device.

Always follow the regulationsestablished by the law.

5.1.TRANSPORT POSITION1. Open the pawl lever of the feed chute andturn the chute aside. Disconnect one end ofthe control lever from the valve and lock thechute into transport position.

2. Turn the discharge chute into transportposition.

3. Before driving off, ensure the machine unit’sappropriate stability and check that thechipper is firmly connected to the tractor andall fasteners are in place.

IMPORTANT! Make sure that the rearlights of the tractor arevisible. Use a separate lightpanel, if needed.

6.PREPARATIONS FOR STARTUP

Do not attempt to operatethis chipper withoutproper training. Read andunderstand the owner’smanual before operatingthe machine.

WARNING!

Failure to heed the warnings printed onthe chipper or in the operators manualmight result in serious injury or death!

6.1.LIFTING

IMPORTANT! Prior to every procedurealways recall the generalsafety instructions given inchapter 3.

Make sure that nobodywillenter the lifting zone.

DANGER!

Always check beforelifting that the liftingequipment is in order anduse the marked liftingpoints, wheneverpossible. Always useproper lifting equipmentand check for its sufficientlifting capacity.

CAUTION!

Know the weight of the load and checkthat the performance of the liftingequipment will not be exceeded.

Check the hoisting cables and chainsregularly. Mark any discarded cableand remove it immediately.

6.2.MOUNTING THE CHIPPER UNIT1. Mount the 3---point hitch lift bar to thechipper frame.

2. Tighten the nuts with a 1 3/16” or 30 mmwrench to 190 foot---punds (260 Nm).

3. Mount the feeding device to the chipper witha hinge pin and, from the other side, with twoM12x40 bolts and M12 nuts. See fig. 4. (Ifyou use a hydraulic feeder, refer to separatemanual for instructions on mounting andconnecting the hydraulics.)

4. Connect the discharge chute to the chipperwith three M10 bolts and nuts. Adjust the lidcontrol with the rod.

5. A Power Take---Off shaft (PTO shaft)transfers the power to the chipper. Thechipper has a 1 3/8” diameter 6 spline PTOhookup.

6. Check for the correct length of the PTOshaft.(Refer to 6.4.)

6.4.PTO---SHAFT

IMPORTANT! If the tractor has aPTO---brake (for exampleFord), you have to use anoverrunning clutch. Shaftrecommendations:M4SLC

6.4.1.CUTTING THE PTO SHAFT TOTHE CORRECT LENGHT

If the PTO shaft is too longit might bind when thethree point hitch is liftedup. Damage might becaused to the bearings ofthe chipper or to the PTOof the tractor. If the PTOshaft is too long it must becut. Both PTO halvesmustbe shortened by equalamounts.

CAUTION!

1. Mount the chipper on the three---point hitchof the tractor.

2. Cut the engine and remove the keys. Lowerthe chipper on a firm and level surface.

3. Check that the splined shafts of the tractorand chipper are on the same level.

4. Connect one shaft half to the chipper PTOand the other half to the tractor PTO. Put thePTO halves side by side so that one shaftend is 1” from the PTO---end of the chipper.Mark the length required. The tubesmust beso short that they cannot reach the bottom inany chipper position. Cut the plastic tube.Refer to fig. 6. ---7.

5. Cut a profile tube piece of similar length asthe plastic tube piece. Shorten the otherPTOshaft similarly. Finish by filing the sharpedges. See fig. 8. --- 9.

7.OPERATING THE CHIPPER

7.1.SAFETY WHEN OPERATING

Prior to any procedurealso recall the generalsafety instructions inchapter 3.IMPORTANT!

Inform everyone whoworks with the chipperabout the risks and howthey can avoid accidents.CAUTION!

Never leave the chipperrunning and unattended.Do not ever standbetween the tractor andthe chipper.DANGER!

Before the chipper is running,ensure that the working place isclear of any bystander within aminimum risk zone of 50 ft. (15meter).Do not let children or untrainedpersons operate the chipper.Do not use the chipperdisconnected from the powersource.When using a tractor, always havethe chippermountedon the 3---pointhitch of the tractor. Otherwise thechipper will tip over.Check that the covers of the PTOshaft are in their place and thetransmission chains are fastened.Safety goggles, earmuffs and a hardhat are obligatory when chipping.Use respirator mask, if necessary.

Do not wear loose clothing, loosesleeves, scarves or long uncoveredhair around moving parts ofmachinery. Also avoid gloves ofpoor condition or with loose fitting,because they might get caught inthe branches.Stay alert! Do not operate thechipper when fatigued or under theinfluence of alcohol / drugs.

7.2.PRIOR TO OPERATING

1. Disengage the PTO, cut the engine and re-move the keys.

2. Lower the chipper on its legs on a hard, evenground as shown in picture below, so that itwill not tip over.

3. Check for the free rotation of the disk by tur-ning the chipper axle byhand. Also check forany foreign object in the chipper and thefeed chute.

4. Make sure that all covers are in place and in-tact. Do not ever remove any cover!

5. Direct the discharge tube into desired positi-on.

The PTO shaft of a newchipper needs lubricatingprior to use!

IMPORTANT!

7.3.STARTING THE CHIPPER

D IMPORTANT!Whenever engaging the PTOclutch on your tractor, you are turning a fly-wheel with a load of 300---600 lbs. Engagethe PTO slowly allowing the flywheel to startto rotate. Once you have the chipper run-ning, you may completely engage the PTOand then bring up the rpm’s to operatingspeed (540 --- 1000 rpm).

7.4.CHIPPING

Prior to any procedurealso recall the generalsafety instructions inchapter 3.IMPORTANT!

Beware of rotatingknives. Risk of cuttinginjury.Feeding wire and barbedwire into the chippermight drag in theoperator.Do not reach inside thefeed chute until allmovements havestopped!

DANGER!

Always keep proper firefighting equipment onhandwhen chipping. Keepan eye on the outsidetemperature of thechipper to preventoverheating of the knives.Stop chipping and let thechipper cool down.

CAUTION!

Good maintenance and a tidy workingplace is of utmost importance for

preventing fire. Check for hotbearings.Pour water down the feed chute, if thechipper starts smoking.Safety goggles, earmuffs and a hardhat are obligatory when chipping. Userespirator mask, if necessary.Do not wear loose clothing, loosesleeves, scarves or long uncoveredhair around moving parts ofmachinery. Also avoid gloves of poorcondition or with loose fitting, becausethey might get caught in the branches.If a wood jams inside the chipper, cutthe engine, remove the keys and waitfor all movements to stop beforereaching inside the feed chute.Look out for flying debris!Before feeding, make sure that thematerial is free from stones, nails andall other materials that are not wood,paper or plastic. Also avoid chippingwood that are frozen solid, as they willnot self---feed well.Do not stand in front of the feed chutewhen feeding. The feed roller mightjerk the wood up or to the right.D Feed the wood standing on the left side ofthe chute.

D When chipping wood, push the wood trunkinside the feed chute until the knives or thefeed roller touches the wood. The chipper isself ---feeding, so let go of the wood as soonas the knives or the feed roller touches it.

D Point the discharge downwind to preventdust or chips fromblowingonto the operator.Point the discharge pipe away from win-dows, doorways and other areas wherepeople or animals may be.

D Keep the work area clean so there is nothingto trip over.

D If you are using a hydraulic feeder, refer toseparate manual.

Do not use the chipper intemperatures below ---5 ˚F(---20 ˚C). Risk of knifedamage!IMPORTANT!

7.5.REDUCING THE POWERREQUIRED.

When using a small tractor to power the CH 140chipper, select a 540 rpm PTO speed. Run thetractor at full engine speed and the PTO will turnabout 600---650 rpm.

Should the tractor stall when chipping, reducethe power demand by making the chipper cutwith only one knife: Remove one knife and attachit to theother side of the disk.Now youwill beableto chip material twice as thick. IMPORTANT!Feed the material at half speed.

1. Disengage the PTO, cut the engine and re-move the keys.

2. Open the upper housing bolts (3/4” or 19mmwrench) and turn the upper housing aside.

3. Lock the disk with the lock bolt, fig. 20.4. Turn the feed chute to the side.5. Use protective gloves when handling theknives.

6. First remove the lock nut and then the knifeusing a 17 mm (11/16”) socket wrench. Thedisk bolts are threaded through the disk sothe bolts must be turned out.

7. Before fastening the knife on the other side,prepare the bolts as follows: Place a springwasher on the bolt. Screw on the lock nutand tighten it to 45 Nm (38 foot---pounds).

8. Place another spring washer on the bolt andthread the bolt through the knife into the diskas shown in figure 11. Tighten the bolts to 45Nm (38 foot---pounds). IMPORTANT! To re-tain the balance always use all four fas-tening bolts of the knife.

Interchange the cuttingand counterweight knivesat times toensure that theyare equally much wornand sharpened, and thedisk stays in balance.

7.6.PROCEDURES AFTEROPERATING

7.6.1.CLEARING THE CHIPPERD Prior to shutting down the chipper, alwaysrun a large branch ofØ 80 to100mm(3 to4”)into the knives and let the chipper cut off afew inches. By then reversing the feed direc-tion the knives will be cleared.

Toeliminate thepossibilityof jamming the chipperwhen starting up again,leave a branch in thechipper as a reminder ofhaving cleared the knives.

IMPORTANT!

7.6.2.TURNING THE CHIPPER OFF INTRACTOR USED Let the tractor rpm idle before turning thePTO to OFF---position. This is especially im-portant on tractors with PTO brakes, such asFord, where you, after idling the tractor,should slowly move the PTO control lever tothe OFF---position.

7.6.3.TURNING THE CHIPPER OFF INHYDRAULIC MOTOR USE

After turning the chipperoff wait for all movementsto stop; the disk willcontinue to rotate byflywheel momentum afterthe PTO has beendisconnected.

DANGER!

Never disconnect thehydraulics from highrpm’s. This will cause riskof cavitation and mightdamage the hydraulicmotor. Check that nosounds of cavitation emitfrom the hydraulic motor.

CAUTION!

To prevent cavitation it isvery important to slowlyreduce the base machinerpm’s to idle beforedisconnecting thehydraulics.

IMPORTANT!

7.7.PARKING THE CHIPPER

D Ensure that the chipper is placed on a hardlevel and horizontal surface.

D Ensure that there is nomaterial in the chipperor in the feed chute except for the remainderbranch.

D Clean the working area.

8.1. BEFORE LUBRICATION ANDMAINTENANCE

Always disengage thePTO and turn the tractorOFF before you service orrepair the chipper.WARNING!

Wait for all movement to stop beforereaching inside the feed chute.

Remove the keys so that the tractor cannot be started up accidentally.

Lock the disk for service or repair

Park the chipper on hard and levelground, so it will not fall down.

8.2. LUBRICATION

Hot oil and oil spray ishazardous.

Avoid skin contact with oiland grease. Alwaysconsult a physician incases of getting oil in theeyes or possible skinchanges.

WARNING!

Avoid mixing lubricants of differentgrade and quality. Use onlyrecommended oils or oils withcorresponding characters.

Follow the instructions and regulationsof the manufacturers and theauthorities.

Always wear proper clothing, skinprotecting crèmes or appropriategloves.

Never use lubricating oils or greases toclean your hand with. Metal particlesand additives in the lubricants mightdamage the skin.

8.2.1.LUBRICATING THE BEARINGSThe bearings are factory---greased with ShellAlvania Grease R 3. Use a similar lubricant,such as Kendall L427. IMPORTANT! Too muchgrease will cause heat, which reduces lubri-cation.

D Lubricate the bearings every 200 workinghours or once a year.

1.Disengage the PTO, cut the engine and re-move the keys.2.Open the upper housing bolt and remove /turn aside the upper housing.3.Lock the disk with the lock bolt, fig. 20.4.Remove / turn aside the feed chute.5.Remove the top of the bearing housing. Re-move as much old grease as you can and re-place it with new, but do not fill the housingcompletely. Refer to Replacing the bearing asadvised in chapter 8.3.1.6.Replace the top of the bearing housing. Tigh-ten to 38 foot---pounds (50 Nm).

8.2.2.LUBRICATING THE PTO SHAFTD Lubricate the PTO shaft prior to operatingand with intervals shown in fig. 12.

In cold weather theplastic tubes must begreased to preventthem from freezingsolid.

8.3. BEARINGS

8.3.1.REPLACING THE BEARINGS7. Remove the fastening bolts M10 (7) andthe upper bearing housings (6).

8. Mark the location of the tightening cone onthe shaft.

9. Lift the disk.10.Bend the claw of the securing ring (3) outfrom the notch on the axle nut and openthe axle nut.

11.Remove the axle nut, securing ring, spacerring (4), bearing (5), spacer ring (9), andtightening cone (10).

12.Install the tightening cone, spacer ring (9),and bearing on the disk shaft. Note thethickness of the spacer ring (9) --- see Fig.13.

13.Install the securing ring with the claws fa-cing outwards and the inside claw in thegroove of the tightening cone, and installthe axle nut.

14.The inner ring of the bearing should presstightly against the tightening cone.

15.Tighten the axle nut with a hook spanneruntil the bearing is tightly on the cone, orto 80 Nm. However, the outer ring of thebearing should turn freely. Note the locati-on of the tightening cone on the shaft.

16.Bend one claw of the securing ring (3) intoa notch on the axle nut.

17.Install the other half of the dust cover andend plate on the bearing housing. Installthe spacer ring (4) on the shaft.

18.Lower the disk to the bearing housing.19.Attach the other half of the dust cover tothe upper bearing housing; install the up-per bearing housing fastening bolts andtighten to 50 Nm.

20.Lubricate the bearing housing. An excessiveamount of grease causes overheating andimpairs lubrication.

5. Remove the spacer ring (3) if thebearing is atthe feeder side.

6. Measure the radial clearance on top of thebearing between the rollers and outer ringwith a feeler gauge. The clearance should be0.02–0.03 mm. Measure the clearance bypushing the feeler gaugebetween the rollers(point A, Fig. 16.) through the bearing andthen moving the gauge back and forth be-tween the rollers and outer ring --- see Fig.17. Donot force the feeler gauge through theclearance.

7. If the clearance exceeds 0.03 mm, bend theclaw of the securing ring (2) out from thenotch on the axle nut (1).

8. The bearing is tightened by turning the axlenut clockwise with a 70 mm or 2 3/4” hookspanner until the right clearance is achieved.Do not tighten by hammering the axle nut.

9. Turn the axle nut clockwise until the notch isaligned with the nearest claw of the securingring. Bend the claw into the notch. Do notbend the claw that was bent earlier.

10.Lower the disk to the bearing housing.11.Install the upper bearing housing and tight-en the bolts (6) to 50 Nm.

12.Lubricate the bearing housing. An excessiveamount of grease causes overheating andimpairs lubrication.

8.4. CHANGING THE SPLINED AXLE

IMPORTANT! Only a qualified person is allo-wed to change the splined axle.

1.Disengage the PTO, cut the engine and re-move the keys.2.Open the upper housing bolts and remove it.3.Remove / turn aside the feed chute.4.Remove the top of the bearing housings.5.Lift away the disk.6.Remove the bearings, fig. 13.IMPORTANT! Welding damages the bea-rings.

7.Grind a 7/16” (11 mm) deep groove about11/16”” (17 mm) from the edge of the axle,fig.19.8.Turn the axle so that it comes loose and canbe removed.9.Clean the hole before mounting the new axle.Tap the new axle slightly in place.10.Protect the joint faces from splashes beforewelding.11.Weld a fillet weld, for example ESAB 68.81,OK 48, OK Femax 38.65 with 3 runs. Finish thewelding.12.Reassemble the chipper.

8.5. KNIVES AND ANVILS

ROTATING KNIVES!Wait for all movement tostop before reachinginside the feed chute.DANGER!

The disk continues rotating by flywheelmomentum after the PTO has beendisengaged.

Failure to follow safety precautionscould result in serious personal injuryor death.

8.5.1.SHARPENING THE KNIVESThe knives need sharpening when:

D The wood does not self --- feed well.D The power demand has increased.D The chip surface is rough.

By keeping the knives asoriginal pairs they willwear equally and the diskwill stay in balance.IMPORTANT!

Avoid getting the knife hot whensharpening. Sharpen both knives thesame amount.1.Disengage the PTO, cut the engine and re-move the keys.2.Open the upper housing bolts (3/4” or 19mmwrench). Turn the upper housing to the side.3.Lock the disk with the lock bolt, fig. 20.4.Remove or turn the feed chute to the side.5.Remove the four locknuts behind the knifeframe (socket size 11/16” or 17mm). See fig 20.6.Remove the fastening bolts of the knife,which are threaded through the disk (socketsize 17mm or 11/16”). Be aware of knuckle in-jury, if the wrench should slip when turning.

8.5.2.ADJUSTING THE CLEARANCEBETWEEN THE KNIVES AND THEHORIZONTAL ANVILNormally you can sharpen the knives 10 timesbefore the anvil needs to be adjusted. Adjustthe anvil if the clearance to the edge of theknives exceeds 1,5 mm or 1/16 of an inch. Re-fer to fig. 24.

1.Disengage the PTO, cut the engine and re-move the keys.2.Open the upper housing bolts (3/4” or 19mmwrench). Turn the upper housing to the side.3.Lock the disk with the lock bolt, fig. 20.4.Remove or turn the feed chute to the side.

5.Loosen the three fastening bolts (A, B) of theanvil. One of them is located under the feedchute. The wrench size is 15/16” or 24 mm.6.Turn the disk so that a knife and the anvil areopposite each other. Adjust the anvil with thenuts (C.) fig. 23. wrench size 3/4” or 19 mm)until a clearance of 1/20...1/30 of an inch. If youdo not have a gauge, use the tickness of amatchbox cover as a guide.7.Tighten the adjusting nuts (C). Tighten theanvil fastening bolts (A, B) to 200 Nm or 155foot---pounds.
