INTRODUCTION

• The Chipko movement (literally "to stick" in Hindi) was a group of female in the Uttarakhand region of India who acted to prevent the felling of trees.

• Chipko means tree hugging or “embrace” as the villagers hugged the trees.

• Locally it is called as Angwal.

• The movement began in Chamoli district in 1973 and spread throughout the Uttarakhand Himalayas by the end of the decade.

• The movement is best known for its tactic of hugging trees to prevent them being cut down and to prevent commercial timber harvesting.

• Chipko movement was based on the Gandhian philosophy of peaceful resistance to achieve the goals.

AIM OF THE CHIPKO MOVEMENT

The main aim of the chipko movement is to: • Stop the felling of trees.• Prevent trees being cut down • Protest against the destruction of the forests• Practice Hindu beliefs in non-violence and the unity.

The chipko movement is teaching the people better land use ,nursery management and reforestation methods.

FEATURES

• One of Chipko's most salient features was the mass participation of women villagers.

• As the backbone of Uttarakhand's agrarian economy, women were most directly affected by environmental degradation and deforestation, and thus connected the issues most easily.

• Despite this, both female and male activists did play pivotal roles in the movement including Gaura Devi, Sudesha Devi, Bachni Devi, Chandi Prasad Bhatt, Sundarlal Bahuguna, Govind Singh Rawat, Dhoom Singh Negi, Shamsher Singh Bisht, and Vandana Shiva.

SUCCESS OF CHIPKO MOVEMENT

• The movement has spread to many states in the country.

• It stopped felling of trees in the Western Ghats and the Vindhyas.

• Generated pressure for formulation of a natural resource policy.

• Achieved a major victory in 1980 with a 15-year ban on green felling in the Himalayan forests

• More than 1,00,000 trees have been saved from excavation.

• Afterward environmental awareness increased dramatically in India.

• New methods of forest farming have been developed, both to conserve the forests and create employment.

• By 1981, over a million trees had been planted through their efforts.
