Dear Readers:This week, The BurkeConnection turns over its pagesto the youth and students.We asked principals and teachers from

area schools to encourage students to con-tribute their words, pictures and photos forour annual Children’s Issue.

The response as always was enormous.While we were unable to publish every piecewe received, we did our best to put togethera paper with a fair sampling of the submit-ted stories, poems, drawings, paintings,photographs and other works of art.

We appreciate the extra effort made byschool staff to gather the materials duringtheir busy time leading up to the holidays.We’d also like to encourage both schools andparents to mark their 2016 calendars forearly December, the deadline for submis-sions for next year’s Children’s Connection.

Let’s Go, Bruins!This year, my family went to a football

game at Lake Braddock for the first time.My family tailgated at Lake Braddock park-ing lot. We ate grilled hotdogs and Doritos.My brother and I played football in thegrass. At 6:30 p.m. it was time to go to thestands to watch the game. I like LakeBraddock games, because I like how theannouncer has a special way of saying firstdown, “IIIIIIIIIIIIT’S FIRST AND TEN LAKEBRADDOCK!!” I also like the marchingband, because they play great. I might tryout for the marching band when I’m in ninthgrade. I started going to more games. Ihoped they would keep winning, so theycould remain undefeated. Even thoughLake Braddock lost in the playoffs, at leastthey got there. Next year I will go to a lotmore Lake Braddock football games, be-cause I believe in purple and gold.

The Greatest Teacherin the World Award

Mrs. Manikas is such a great teacher. Sheis especially good at teaching math. She isenthusiastic and energetic. For example, shelikes to teach us by using silly songs. Thesongs really help you remember the con-cept. She is considerate of teaching manydifferent ways. She is a very determinedteacher. She made sure her students knewall of the 4th grade concepts. She eventaught some of the 5th grade concepts aswell. Even though she isn’t my teacher any-more, she still comes and watches me playbaseball sometimes. It makes me feel re-ally happy, and I think I even play better.She does what is best for her students,which makes her the greatest 4th gradeteacher in the world.

A Rare GuyTriplets are very rare. In fact there are

only 7,000 triplets in America. That’s notmany, considering that there are318,900,000 people in America. I am oneof the rare ones. A lot of people ask me: Doyou have brothers or sisters? I have 2 sis-ters. Another common question that peopleask me is: Who was born first? I tell peoplethat Ainsley was first, then Ava, then me(it’s good to be young!). I am happy to havesisters. Pros about triplets are: triplets shareother toys with their brothers or sisters andthree birthday cakes! Also, we help eachother with our homework. Ainsley helps mewith reading, and I help Ava with math.Cons about triplets are all of us have to

Now my friend Aaron is up to bat. Firstpitch is a wild one so I started to steal. I ranas fast as I could to second base and it wasan easy steal because the catcher didn’t geteven to second base. Next pitch Aaron hitsit right next to me so I didn’t run. Then, Istarted but the shortstop had the ball andwas chasing so I dove back to second base.I was just nearly but Aaron was so safe-maybe even too safe. Someone else is upto bat. Aaron and I were on base. One pitchball, ball, strike ball, ball now it’s soft tossand the coach tosses the ball up. He hits itto second base and he was safe at first. 3strike outs later…

Now we are fielding, one out later. I am athird baseman. The batter is having softtoss. The batter hits it. I dive to catch it andthe guy at third starts running but didn’ttouch third base because I caught it. It is arule so I touched third and I got a doubleplay. The whole team doggie piled on me

and I felt so happy.The End.

Big Ice CreamIt was a Thursday and the

sun was shining. This waswhen I lived in Germany. Ev-ery day the ice cream manwould come on base afterschool and I would buy twoscoops of ice cream on a teenycone. I was in my house and Iheard ice cream music. I askedMom to get money and she gother purse but it was TOOLATE!

So, we got in the car. It wasa high speed chase! It got tothe point that we drove off thebase. We were still chasing theice cream man. We were onthe highway honking the horn.

The ice cream man pulledover and we pulled over. Hegave me a humongous icecream cone with tons ofscoops of pistachio ice cream.I had a great time with my icecream cone. Sadly, it onlylasted 5 seconds flat around.

The Legend ofthe SwampGiant

It was a dusky night at theDismal Swamp. A couple ofsettlers were lost in theswamp. “It’s…C..c..cold outhere!” the cowardly one said.“It’s just a little rain,” the fear-less one chuckled. “Help! Helpme!” The fearless settler hearda woman call. He and the cow-ardly one ran to the rescue toLake Drummond. They sawthe woman…but she wasn’teven human! She…or it…wasa giant! It was covered in mud,tree trunks, dead animals andsoil. The monster grabbed themen and swallowed themwhole never to return to theircolony. The monster onlywanted a snack! So, when yougo to the Dismal Swamp, don’t cry or worrywhen you hear: “ARR WARRRRR!!!” It’s justthe poor Swamp Giant asking for a picnicwith you. Bring a snack like a bunny orapple, and you might meet a new friend!This brings our story to an end, and we willsee you in your dreams…

ning. The score was tied 1-1 and it was myturn to bat. I am the first batter in the in-ning. The first pitch is a ball, second strikeball. Ball strike, ok now it’s 3-2 full countlast pitch, I hit. I say to myself, “Oh yeah”and I sprint as fast as I could to first baseand I am safe!

Have you ever chased a dog thathad your shoe in his mouth whileyour great aunt tries to sweep thedog? There I was in gleaming,sunny Italy early August. I wasabout to leave for a small town inthe mountains. I go out onto theporch to grab my sandals and onlynoticed…ONE?! I begin thesearch. Then when I finally startto give up, I hear one…TWO!barks. I look over next door to seetwo adorable puppies! One wasrunning around like crazy and theother one had my shoe in hismouth. First, my mom and brotherhear the barking and they comeover to see the two barking dogs.One running around like crazy andthe other with my shoe in hismouth. “It’ll get the shoe!” Mybrother yells, “No, be careful!” Mymom replies. Then, my great auntcame outside, she says somethingthat I don’t understand. Soon Inotice that she said “I got thebroom” because she comes out of

the shed with a broom. “What theheck is she doing?” I ask my mom“I’m not sure,” she replied. Then,Zia (my aunt) begins to sweep thedogs. I feel so bad. Then all of asudden the hectic adventure getscrazier! My aunt’s cat runs aroundon the porch…ALSO! The dogwith my shoe drops the sandal anddarts after the cat (who by the waywas not behind the wheel of thecar). Then Zia gets Mad!!! All Ihear is blah blah blah somethingin Italian. Then, Zia sprints afterthe dog. Finally, she comes backand I notice the dogs runninghome. It takes about 5 hours forthe cat to SAFELY jump off theroof. We stand there mouths open.Finally, I say, “At least we got theshoe!” So now you know thisabout me: Now you know that myfamily is crazy and I love it.

The Best Gift I Ever ReceivedThe best gift I ever received was my puppy, Cookie. I always

wanted a puppy, and when I was 8 years old, my dad and I stoppedby my brother’s teacher’s house. To my surprise when she openedthe door three Shih Tzu puppies ran up to greet me. They were allso cute, but the cutest puppy was the littlest black and white one.I wanted that one. But the owner said she wanted to keep thatpuppy, because she was the runt. Then she looked at my dad andsaid if your daughter really wants that one she can have her. WhenI got home that day I was thinking of names, and finally a nameclicked in my head: COOKIE. I named her that because she re-minds me of a cookie, and my brother’s dog is named Oreo, sowhen they’re together their names are Oreo Cookie.

The best gift I ever received was my dog. My dog’s name is Win-ston. We got my dog Winston in September at Yorktown, Virginia.He is a toy poodle, and he has black fur, gray fur, white fur and atan mustache, too. His fur is really fuzzy and soft. Winston is acute puppy. He just turned 2 years old. We walk with my dog Win-ston on his leash and collar. My dog Winston goes outside to go tothe restroom. Winston comes upstairs to my room or my brother’sroom or sisters’ room to sleep and play with us. Winston chaseshis toys, and we fetch them. My dog Winston loves me, and that’swhy he is the best present I ever received.

I was sitting on the floor watching T.V when I heard my dogbarking to let her outside. When I slide open the door, at thatmoment, a chilly breeze accompanied by two or three frosty snow-flakes cooled my face. I took another step forward and my face litup. It was snow! I had never seen snow except on T.V. Living inAlabama for the past 10 years of my life, meant no true snow.

Not caring that all I was wearing was an old t-shirt and shorts,I pranced into the snow, picking it up and throwing it. When thesnowflakes hit my face and I kicked around piles of snow in tonsof different directions, it made me feel warm inside. It was justlike when you’re all gathered around the Christmas tree or doingother special things like that.

About an hour later, I was freezing, but I wanted to play more.So, I went inside to get my brand new snow gear. Sadly, by thetime I went outside again, the snow had stopped falling in a flash.It might be gone today, but I knew there would be more snow-flakes to come, this winter and many more.

Hi! It’s me, Ida!Let me tell you a little bit about myself:

My favorite colors are green and yellow.I play the saxophone.I really like chimpanzees.I have no pets.(I want a dog!)I Love School!

Speaking of school, I think I heard Mom call myname.

“Ida!” she yelled up to me. “Are you ready for schoolyet?” As you know, I love school, so I said,

“Yes, Mom!” but I really wasn’t.As I was brushing my hair, I noticed an apple on

my desk. I walked over to it and picked it up. I feltsomething tickle the back of my hand, so I turnedthe apple around and found a note.

It read: Have a nice day at school! — XOXO, MomI frowned and put it in my sweatshirt pocket. Then

I walked to school confused.When I got to school, I said “hi” to all of my friends

and sat down in my seat to unpack my backpack.Then the 9 a.m. the bell rang, and my teacher

clapped her hands to let us know that the day wasstarting. “Claaaaass?” she said, calmly but loudly.“Yeeeees?” we echo her.

“Today everyone is going to choose one type ofapple, and do a report on it. It is due tomorrow atnoon.”

The moment she said the word “apple,” I put myhand in my pocket. But I felt no apple. Instead, I felta piece of paper.

The next morning, I took the paper out of my desk,where I had put it, and went to the computer to lookup, “kinds of apples.” When I finally decided to domy report on crabapples I started jotting down notes.As soon as I finished writing the word “crabapple,”whole 5

paragraphs about apples magically appeared onthe paper!

When I went to school the next day, I knew that Igot an A+ by the look on my teacher’s face!

When I got my paper back the next day, I showedit to Mom, she was in the same amazement as myteacher.

That night, when I went up to bed, I saw my re-port lying on my bed. But as soon as I touched it, itturned back into an apple.

What makes a good friend, in myopinion, is honesty. Let’s saysomeone liked broccoli and theperson they are trying to befriend hatesbroccoli. You would most likely lie to them.This isn’t really a serious lie but, let’s saysomeone was dating your girlfriend rightbehind your back and that someone is yourbest friend. Of course they would try andhide it from you but eventually you wouldfind out. When you finally do, the honestyand trust that you have built over the yearswould have been broken. This is why hon-esty makes a good friend.
