APD Impact on Learning

• Strong auditory processing in children is heavily correlated to grades, reading, homework behavior and enjoymentof learning. It is a critical skill that underpins all learning.

• The consequences of auditory processing disorder on early learning are relatively obvious. If your child is nothearing you or his/her teachers or peers clearly, learning will be delayed. It also impacts expressive language --vocabulary, articulation and relating stories -- often referred to as a language processing disorder.Language processing disorder

• Over time almost all children with auditory processing disorder learn to listen more accurately, but only at greatcost. They learn that they can process more accurately if they concentrate intently. There are two major problemswith this coping strategy:

• Thinking while listening is weakened. The need to concentrate on listening means that your child has limitedcapacity to think about what he/she is hearing, to connect what is being said to other knowledge, to makeinferences, and most importantly to think critically. This is called metacognition -- the ability to self-correct andanalyze while listening or reading. Metacognition is a critical learning skill that is the difference between a pass orfail in high school.

• Learning is exhausting. If your child is working hard in class just to understand the words a teacher is saying, thinkhow exhausting that must be; and all day long. Understandably, this exhaustion factor makes it hard to enjoylearning and difficult to maintain focus. Not surprisingly, auditory processing disorder in children is oftendiagnosed as an inattentive attention deficit disorder.Treatment for attention deficit disorder

• Auditory processing disorder also impacts phonological awareness -- hearing the individual sounds that make upwords -- an essential reading skill. In fact, the vast majority of reading problems stem from an underlying auditoryprocessing difficulty.Auditory processing and reading

How to help

• Step 3

• Use short, simple sentences and maintain eye contact when you speak to your child. If you need togive complex directions, ask your child to repeat each step back to you. Doing these things will helpyour child focus on your message and increase the likelihood that he will understand what you say.

• Step 4

• Teach your child that she must continually seek out ways to compensate for her APD. Whileteachers and therapists can make certain concessions and adjustments to facilitate learning, your

child must accept responsibility for obtaining necessary information.• Step 5

• Obtain an auditory trainer device for your child. An auditory trainer device is a headset used inconjunction with a teacher's microphone to eliminate background noise and ease communicationin the classroom.

• Step 6

• Educate yourself about various treatment therapies available for APD and find which therapy worksbest for your child. According to Teri James Bellis, PhD, CCC-A of the American Speech-Language-

Hearing Association, there are numerous therapies designed to treat APD, and your child's successwill depend on finding the right one.
