Shooting Star Chase is a leading children’s hospice charity caring for babies, children and young people with life-limiting conditions, and their families, across in London and Surrey.

Whether lives are measured in days, weeks, months or years, we are here to make every moment count. We support families from diagnosis to end of life and throughout bereavement with a range of nursing, practical, emotional and medical care. This care service includes short breaks at our two hospices (Shooting Star House in Hampton and Christopher’s in

Guildford), Hospice at Home, day care, symptom management, end-of-life care, bereavement care and a comprehensive range of therapies and support groups for the whole family.

Our bespoke support is free of charge to families and available 365 days a year. To deliver that vital care we need to raise £10 million every year, and with only 10% of that income coming from government funding, we rely on supporters’ generosity and other income generating activities to keep the service running.

Demand for our care increases every year, not just in numbers but also the range of services to best support families’ individual needs. At the same time complexities have increased, requiring greater staffing levels and expertise. Both hospices are rated Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission, which is testament to the highly dedicated, passionate and effective team of 200 staff and 700 volunteers.

The Chief Executive role at Shooting Star Chase is exciting and fulfilling. I hope this pack provides all the necessary information about the role and the charity, and inspires you to apply.

Our historyShooting Star Chase began as two separate children’s hospice charities. CHASE was founded in 1994 and started as a community-based service in 1999. Two years later Christopher’s Children’s Hospice in Guildford opened to families. Royal Patron HRH The Countess of Wessex officially opened Christopher’s in 2002.

The Shooting Star Trust was founded in 1995 and after seven years of capital fundraising construction of a hospice got underway. Shooting Star House in Hampton welcomed its first family in 2005 and it was officially opened by HRH The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall in 2006. In April 2011, the two charities merged to become Shooting Star Chase in order to provide more care for more children and families in London and Surrey.

Since becoming Shooting Star ChaseShooting Star Chase has cared for 5,000 people across London and Surrey since the merger in 2011. During that time we have supported over 1,200 children with life-limiting conditions, and over 3,700 parents and siblings. There are also many more people – extended family members such as grandparents – who have received our care.

Today Shooting Star Chase cares for 700 families, representing a 36% increase in supported families than on the first day of the merger. In five years as Shooting Star Chase we have provided 15,300 short breaks, 43,100 hours of Hospice at Home visits and 27,000 hours of therapy activities. As well as making every moment count throughout a child’s life, end-of-life care remains a fundamental and valued part of the care provided. Since the merger 337 children supported by the charity have sadly died. Many of these families have used one of the hospice bereavement suites, and received further support such as counselling and memory days.

In addition to numbers, Shooting Star Chase has continued to develop its service to meet the evolving needs of families. These include extending the symptom care provision across both hospices to provide even more specialist advice for children with particularly complex health needs, employing social workers to help families navigate other services on offer to them, and a transition coordinator who helps prepare families as their child begins to reach an age where they become too old for a children’s hospice service and need to access more age-appropriate services.

We will provide high quality, safe and effective care, and further develop our service in response to evolving needs.

To increase the income and awareness we need to maintain and develop the care service we provide.

To attract, retain and develop people with the right skill set who will deliver our strategy and share our values. We want all our people – staff and volunteers – to feel valued for the work they do.

To further develop our role as a key driver of innovation and best practice in children’s hospice and palliative care.

To achieve our purpose

Our strategy More care for more children and families

In 2014 we launched a new five-year strategy to run to the end of 2018. Last year, as we reached the halfway stage, we felt it timely to review our progress and amend some aspects accordingly. Below sets out our updated strategy.
