November is Hindu Heritage Month at the TDSB

In 2016, the Government of Ontario declared the month of November each year as Hindu Heritage Month. Canadians of Hindu faith have greatly contributed to civic life in Canada for decades, and are a vibrant part of the growth and pros-perity of Toronto, Ontario and Canada. On April 18, 2018, the TDSB Trustees voted to recognize the month of November as Hindu Heritage Month.

The theme chosen for the inaugural year is Namaste. Namaste is a way of showing respect and that you are equal to one another. It means, the divine in me bows to the divine in you. It is used with all people one meets, from young and old to friends and strangers. The bowing down of the head is a gracious form of extending friendship in love, respect, and humility. Our Partnership

At Chief Dan George, we believe education to-day must prepare your child for tomorrow’s world. Students need to learn more than facts. They must acquire 21st century skills such as critical thinking, communication, collaboration and creativity. Instruction, assessment and evaluation in our classrooms support multiple learning goals. As students explore personal interests and path-ways to success, they work towards key exit outcomes, developing skills and habits that will help them be productive, successful citizens.

Parent Volunteers and Police Checks

We are always looking for parent volun-

teers to support our teaching and learn-

ing initiatives here at CDG. As you

know, if you wish to volunteer, a police

reference check must be completed. In-

formation is available from the office.

Further to this, parents who have a po-

lice check completed, must provide a

yearly Offence Declaration. If you are a

parent volunteer and have not yet com-

pleted the Offence Declaration, simply

come to the main office and the office

staff will walk you through it. It takes 30

seconds. Hard copies are also available.

The Fundamental Principals of Assessment and Evaluation

Teachers use assessment and evaluation practices that: * are fair, transparent and equitable * support all students * are carefully planned * are clearly explained to students and parents at the beginning of the school year * are ongoing and varied, and provide multiple opportunities for student to demonstrate their learning * include feedback that is clear, meaningful and timely * develop student self-assessment skills

On the first Monday of each month, your School Council meets. The meetings begin at 7:00 p.m. and the aim is to have it completed by 8:30 p.m. All are invited! November’s meeting will take place on Monday, November 5, 2018.

Parent Council Meeting

We will be having our Remembrance Day Ceremony on November 9th at 10:30 a.m. to honour those Canadians who gave their lives fighting for peace and freedom around the world, and to those brave men and women who have and are continuing to serve our country. Please joins us for this important ceremony. Mrs. Fabro’s music classes will be performing as a large group and the students are asked to wear a red or white top and dark pants. Ms. Brandon and Mme Levande’s Kindergarten classes will also be performing. Any students who are in Cadets, Boy Scouts, Girl Guides or any of the other organization is encouraged to wear his or her uniform for the ceremony. In addition, we kindly ask for a small donation of a loonie per student to place in the Royal Canadian Legion Poppy Day Box. If you could please send the donation with your child on November 9th, it would be greatly appreciated. Let’s show our veterans that we are grateful for their sacri-fice to ensure our freedom and for all of those who served Canada during both World Wars and all other military mis-sions since. -Ms. Conteh and Mrs. Fabro

Picture Re-Take/Class Photos This Fall, we had a great turn out for both our girls

and boys soccer teams. Our grade 6, 7 and 8 boys

soccer team showed a lot of determination and com-

mitment to the team by attending every practice.

They played well in their tournament but were una-

ble to advance. Thanks boys! We will see you next

year!

Our Grade 6, 7 and 8 girls soccer team placed first in

their tournament and advanced to the semi-finals

were they played with a lot of heart and persis-

tence. Unfortunately, they lost but we are proud of

their efforts. Thank you for a great season and we

hope to see you next year as well!

Mr. Lucas & Mme Dorélien

Be Our Guest! We are very excited to announce that our school will be putting on our very first mu-sical! We will be putting on Beauty and the Beast. There will be performances in May with more information to follow. Open auditions start November 1st and run until November 9th for Grades 1 to 8. All talents are welcome. As the year progresses, we would love to have parent volunteers to help with costume making and set design. Please let us know if you can lend you talents to this production. Thank you in advance. Cross Country 2018

As a member of this year’s Cross Country team, I am proud to announce that another successful year of Cross Country has finished. This year’s team was able to form strong bonds with teammates and coaches. Everyone did a fantastic job and demon-strated commitment and good sportsmanship. Con-gratulations goes to Sarah and Keshav who qualified and went on to run in the All City Finals.

Congratulations again to this year’s Cross Country Team. A job well done!

Terry Fox Run

The numbers are in! Congratulations to the students, families, and friends who helped us to raise money for cancer research in this year’s 2018 Terry Fox Run! Our grand total was $1,200.00. A big congratulations goes to Mrs. Khanna’s class for raising the most money and to Sarah Tandy for being the biggest individual fundraiser. Thank you to all teachers and vol-unteers, who helped make the run a success, and to the parent council for providing each student with a delicious, crunchy apple for a healthy, well deserved snack, after the run. Thank you again for your support! Terry Fox would be proud that we have carried on his dream. Mrs. Kennedy

New Ward Boundaries for the TDSB

On Dec. 1, 2018, new ward boundaries will come into effect for the Toronto District School Board. These changes are a result of the Government of Ontario’s decision to reduce Toronto City Council from 47 to 25 councillors and realign the City of Toronto’s ward electoral boundaries to reflect provin-cial electoral ridings. By law, the TDSB is required to align its ward electoral boundaries with the City’s. To view the new map and to see which schools will belong to each ward, please visit New Ward Boundaries on tdsb.on.ca at http://www.tdsb.on.ca/Leadership/Boardroom/Municipal-Election-2018/New-Ward-Boundaries
