We’ve been called the biggestlittle company in the in-dustry,” quips Ron Tully,

vice president of new development andinitiatives at National Tobacco Compa-ny, located near Louisville, Kentucky;“Not because of our employment, which is only 300 people (with fully athird of them in our sales department),but because of the experience of ourmanagement team,” which is headed byc.e.o. Larry Wexler, formerly of PhilipMorris, and includes other top-levelmembers with backgrounds in uppermanagement at Philip Morris, SwedishMatch, U.S. Smokeless Tobacco, andSanta Fe Natural Tobacco Co.

Tully, in fact, was Santa Fe NaturalTobacco Co.’s vice president of publicaffairs and developed international mar-kets for their premium cigarettes, andtoday divides his responsibilities at Na-tional Tobacco between searching outnew markets and new product possibili-

ties and the ongoing battle inthe regulatory arena. “These

former upper-echelon managersand executives have breadth and

depth, plus a corporate approach tothe marketplace and earnings. They areadept at succeeding in a draconian regu-latory environment,” Tully explains.

The company’s strategy is to findsmall niche markets where it can occu-py a profitable share of the business,“even if that niche is inhabited by BigTobacco with whom we are not goingmano a mano,” Tully adds. “If you dancewith elephants, you have to stay in thesmall spaces!”

INNOVATION FUELS GROWTHNational Tobacco, founded by in 1988,has an interesting and dynamic story. The company started by obtaining thesmokeless tobacco segment of P. Loril-lard’s portfolio, when Lorillard divest-ed itself of those products. The gem inthe product category was Beech-Nutloose-leaf chewing tobacco, a century-old national brand.

Following ten years successfullymanufacturing and marketing Beech-Nut and other smokeless products, thecompany then obtained the exclusiveU.S. distributorship of French-madeZig-Zag cigarette papers. “The pinnacleof quality interleaf cigarette paper man-ufacturing continues to remain inFrance,” reads an old Zig-Zig slogan, and indeed it was already the dominantbrand in the U.S. cigarette paper mar-ket. But the brand subsequently becamea stepping stone for National Tobacco’steam which envisioned a higher plateaufor Zig-Zag sales by expanding intostraightforward tobacco products anddeveloping Zig-Zag cigarette tobaccosfor the RYO/MYO market.

This move coincided with the 1998Master Settlement Agreement (MSA),which raised cigarette taxes but not ciga-rette tobacco taxes. The RYO/MYO mar-ket exploded, prompting National Tobac-co to add canning and pouching produc-tion lines for Zig-Zag-sourced tobacco atits Louisville facilities. Today, Zig-Zag to-bacco—a long-cut Virginia and Burley-based blend with a touch of aromatic to-baccos to “pique the pallete” is offered inOriginal, Light, and Menthol versions ineither 6 oz. cans or .75 oz. pouches.

“The recognizable Zig-Zag name wasvery good at breaking National Tobaccoout of smokeless tobacco and into theOTP category of RYO,” Tully explains.“After all, you can buy Zig-Zag paperson almost every street corner.” The nameis inherently ingrained. “Since its 1932U.S. introduction, its quality and brandrecognition have been so firmly set, many people refer to all cigarette papersas ‘Zig-Zags’,” adds Tully. The extensionfrom quality cigarette papers to qualitytobacco was an easy step for consumersto accept—a logical and comfortablebrand progression. The brand’s origin—said to be traced to an inventive FrenchZouave desert fighter—and companyhistory can be found on Zig-Zag’s officialwebsite, zigzag.com, along with currentpromotions and other information.

Additional strategically sound ac-quisitions followed, and the companyadvanced across the marketplace chess-board, taking opposing pieces and
