The conference logo concept was developed by the 2012 Scientific Program Committee. The logo illustrates a shaft of wheat over the distinctive outline of the Province of Saskatchewan. The wheat grows from nurtured beginnings to full golden bloom, reaching towards the intense blue skies of the prairie landscape.

Where to Find… Conference Objectives

As CHICA-Canada and the field of Infection Prevention and Control (IPAC) ‘grow for the future’, we face new and exciting prospects and challenges. Never before has a National CHICA Conference been held in the Province of Saskatchewan. Leaders across the country are realizing the key role undertaken by Infection Prevention and Control Professionals (ICPs) and their programs. And we continue to grow.

Over the past several years, CHICA has endeavoured to reinforce the importance and necessity of understanding and correctly applying the basics, or ‘foundations’, while also recognizing the ‘opportunities’ and requirements to advance and reach new heights.

IPAC is growing for the future through many branches: cleaning, disinfection, sterilization and the use of ‘green’ products; supporting leaders to help them make IPAC a priority; IPAC-specific accreditation standards; antibiotic stewardship; and global IPAC. Changes at home and around the world require ICPs to move forward with initiatives that support the importance of our role. The 2012 CHICA-Canada National Conference offers healthcare professionals a forum that acknowledges where we have come from, recognizes the development we have achieved, and identifies our growth for the future.

Objectives for the 2012 Conference include:

1. To provide an educational program that meets key challenges faced in IPAC;

2. To provide opportunities to share ideas and practice techniques; and define issues and potential solutions with peers;

3. To promote the exchange of important new approaches and concepts in the field of IPAC;

4. To offer tools and develop strategies to assist ICPs to elevate the standard of practice and improved IPAC performance;

5. To encourage and support both novice and more experienced ICPs;

6. To provide ICPs with enhanced knowledge to educate, lead, inspire, mentor, champion and collaborate within their healthcare setting;

7. To showcase CHICA-Canada as a pre-eminent source of Infection Prevention and Control expertise in Canada.

This event is an Accredited Group Learning Activity (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification program of The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. This activity was approved by the Canadian Society of Internal Medicine. (Approval pending.)

The language of the conference is English.

Saskatchewan is booming, and now, CHICA-Canada is bringing our 2012 National Education Conference “Growing for the Future” to Saskatoon.

Conference Chair Anne Bialachowski, Scientific Program Chair Molly Blake, Scientific Co-Chair Colette Ouellet and their committee have created a program aimed at promoting both your personal and professional growth. There is something for everyone: specialty topics on Pre-Conference Day, specific sessions for novice and advanced practitioners, and numerous concurrent sessions covering many areas of interest.

The conference itself features several speakers of international renown who will expand our horizons to consider the global view of infection prevention. Many sessions offer information that you can apply to your practice every day: outbreak control, accreditation survey preparation, or pet visitors – you will find lots of things to pique your interest.

There is so much more to take in! Visit the exhibit hall to learn more about leading edge technology and products. Peruse the poster presentations to witness and discuss the innovative ideas and projects of your peers. Take “A Walk Through Boomtown” at our special event to learn more about Saskatchewan’s history. Join a friend or two and run or Walk in support of the International Federation of Infection Control along the lovely South Saskatchewan River.

While you are in Saskatoon take in as many local attractions, restaurants and amenities as you can. This beautiful, multi-cultural city has so much to offer that you might plan to stay a few extra days.

Register today. Join us as we Grow for the Future in Saskatoon.

Infection Prevention and Control – Keeping it fresh, keeping it relevant

JULIE STORR’S current role is with the World Health Organization (WHO) Patient Safety, leading the UK arm of a program to improve infection prevention and patient safety both within England and across the entire WHO region of Africa, with the aim of saving lives through the establishment of mutually beneficial partnerships between hospitals in England and Africa. From 2005 to 2008, Julie worked with the WHO Patient Safety’s First Global Patient Safety Challenge Team as project manager. Her work resulted in real changes in the positioning of infection prevention and hand hygiene improvement as core components of patient safety within the regions of South East Asia and Latin America. Prior to joining WHO, she worked for four years as an Assistant Director for Infection Control at the newly established National Patient Safety Agency. As Project Director for the cleanyourhands campaign, she led the development, testing, evaluation and implementation of a national hand hygiene improvement strategy. The campaign has been found, through independent evaluation, to have made a positive impact on the behaviour of healthcare workers and contributed to reducing the burden of healthcare-associated infection. In her spare time, Julie is studying for a doctorate in public health (DRPH) – Health Care Leadership and Management – at the Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore.

Registration will be at the Delta Bessborough. Look for the Run for IFIC table in the lobby of the Delta Bessborough. Starting point and route to be announced.

Prizes will be awarded for the fastest runners and walkers, as well as the person who raises the most sponsorship dollars. Help us reach our net goal of $3,000.00. Entry fee and sponsorships paid at registration at the Delta Bessborough. The entry fee is $35.00 for runners and walkers. All participants will receive a race T-shirt.
