Advocacy to Strengthen Professional Identity: Leaders across Generations

Facilitator, Dr. Craig, Cashwell, CSI President-Elect

For decades, Chi Sigma Iota has led the charge to establish a clear professional identity for Professional Counselors. This charge remains an essential part of CSIs mission, hence our theme for CSI Day 2014, is Advocacy to Strengthen Professional Identity. We recognize that advocacy is a two pronged activity. Our ultimate goal is service in keeping with our mission to: "… promote a strong professional identity through members (professional counselors, counselor educators, and students) who contribute to the realization of a healthy society by fostering wellness and human dignity.” As a result, our leadership training will foster a clear professional identity with a purpose.

Adler once wrote that we must "Trust only movement. Life happens at the level of events, not of words. Trust movement.” The emphasis of this leadership theme, then, is on movement, actions that will move the profession forward with a stronger professional identity and help us to get up one more time than we have fallen.

This year, during our leadership workshop, we will explore the promotion of counseling excellence through professional identity and leadership across the generations. We will begin by recognizing our 2014-2015 Leadership Fellows and Interns. We will then introduce a panel of three of the counseling profession’s leaders and scholars who have promoted counseling excellence with their research, advocacy, and leadership efforts:

Drs. Jason King, Victoria Kress, and Tom Sweeney represent an early, mid, and late career perspective respectively. They will discuss their views on professional identity and leadership in the counseling profession. Participants also will have an opportunity to interact with panel members and other CSI leaders during the small group discussions.

Dr. Jason King Core Faculty, Walden University Former CSI Intern; President, Upsilon Psi Upsilon and Chi Upsilon Chi chapters Recipient of the 2011 ACES Outstanding Graduate Student Leadership Award and 2012 AMHCA Mental Health Counselor of the Year Award

Dr. Victoria E. Kress Professor, Youngstown State University CSI Past-President (2012-2013) Recipient of the ACA Counselor Educator Advocacy Award (2012); Ohio Counseling Associations Counselor of the Year Award (2011).

Dr. Tom Sweeney Professor Emeritus, Ohio University Executive Director Emeritus and Founding President of Chi Sigma Iota CSI Past-President (1985-1987); Past-President of the American Counseling Association (ACA) and two of its divisions; Founding chair for CACREP.

Education Sessions: Leadership and Advocacy for Counselors

Embracing Our Role as Leaders: Counselor Community Engagement as the Catalyst for Excellence Dr. Nicole Hill Counseling embraces the values of leadership and advocacy, yet there continues to be a professional imperative for more effectively translating our philosophical tenets into action. This presentation will focus on strategies for enhancing the impact counselors can have on clients, families, and systems through community engagement. Participants will explore how counselors can increase their contributions in community engagement as a method for generating excellence in their communities and in our profession. The presentation will be discussion-oriented with a focus on scholarship in action, enacting advocacy and social justice, and striving towards excellence as leaders.

Nicole R. Hill, Ph.D., LPC is a Professor in the Department of Counseling at Idaho State University. During her tenure at ISU, she has served as Department Chair, Coordinator of the Mental Health Program, Coordinator of the Doctoral Program, and Interim Dean of the Graduate School. As of January 2013, she is assuming responsibilities as Chair in the Department of Counseling and Human Services at Syracuse University. Dr. Hill's scholarly interests include working with children and adolescents, multicultural counseling competencies, professional development of faculty and graduate students, and mentoring. She is committed to leadership and professional engagement that strengthens counseling, counselor education, and supervision as a discipline. Her participation on executive boards of CSI, ACES, and CSJ has contributed to a broader understanding of how to advance the profession through service and advocacy. Her clinical experience is focused on counseling children and adolescents.

Transformative Leadership in Counselor Education Dr. Cheryl Holcomb-McCoy In today's diverse and ever-changing communities, counseling leaders need to take an engaged, activist, and courageous approach to help build optimistic futures for all clients, students, parents, and other community members. This session about transformative leadership in counselor education presents an alternative approach to leadership for deep and equitable change. Using vignettes, stories, research, and drawing on scholarship from a range of disciplines, the presenter will explore the concept of transformative leadership and its potential to create learning and living environments that are just and inclusive. This session will appeal to all aspiring and practicing leaders in the counseling profession.

Cheryl Holcomb-McCoy, Ph.D., is Vice Dean of Academic Affairs and Professor of Counseling and Human Development at Johns Hopkins University’s School of Education. Previously, she held appointments as Associate Professor of Counselor Education at the University of Maryland, College Park and Assistant Professor and Director of the School Counseling Program at Brooklyn College of the City University of New York. Dr. Holcomb-McCoy earned a Ph.D. in counseling and educational development from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG), an M.Ed. in school counseling, and a B.S. in early childhood education both from the University of Virginia. Her areas of research specialization include the measurement of multicultural self-efficacy and the examination of school counselors’ influence on low-income students’ college and career readiness. Dr. Holcomb-McCoy is the author of the best-selling book, School Counseling to Close the Achievement Gap: A Social Justice Framework for Success (Corwin Press).

Professional Advocacy through Research and Program Evaluation Dr. Casey Barrio Minton The very thought of utilizing or conducting research creates a sense of fear and disconnection for many counseling professionals. During this interactive session, we will explore ways in which research and program evaluation are essential for engaging in professional advocacy and ensuring effective practice with clients. Participants will take part in activities designed to address barriers, myths, and fears that stand in the way of practice-based research, and the presenter will discuss practical strategies for bringing research and program evaluation into everyday counseling activities. Participants will leave this session with a renewed understanding regarding the importance of research and program evaluation and a resource guide for getting started.

Casey Barrio Minton, Ph.D., is an associate professor and counseling program coordinator at a CACREP-accredited university where she teaches courses in counseling research, multicultural counseling, and diagnosis and treatment planning. She is co-author of Professional Counseling Excellence through Leadership and Advocacy and founding editor of the Journal of Counselor Leadership & Advocacy. The presenter currently serves as President of the Association for Assessment & Research in Counseling and is a Past-President of Chi Sigma Iota International.

Our mission is to promote scholarship, research, professionalism, leadership and excellence in counseling, and to recognize high attainment in the pursuit of academic and clinical excellence in the profession of counseling.

2013-2014 CSI Leadership Essay Contest: Advocacy to Strengthen Professional Identity Since its inception, CSI has emphasized professional advocacy initiatives as central to the maintenance and development of our profession. The Chi Sigma Iota Advocacy Themes provide a model we can use to conceptualize and guide our advocacy planning and efforts. The focus of this year’s essay contest was to challenge CSI members - students, professional counselors, and counselor educators - to consider the ways that they can engage in professional advocacy initiatives. Questions addressed in the essays included:

• Why is the development of a strong professional identity important for counselors? • How can CSI chapters contribute to the development of a strong professional identity? • Identify one or more barriers to the development of a strong professional identity for counselors and discuss

how that barrier can be overcome Below are highlights from our top entries. Congratulations to our two 1st place recipients and three members whose essays earned honorable mentions. All essays are published at csi-net.org/?Leadership Entries for CSIs Leadership Essay Contest are accepted throughout the year. Recipients are selected annually in December. All CSI members are eligible to contribute essays. Recognition is provided in three categories: entry level students, doctoral students, and professional counselors.
