One of our most vital education and outreach programs was held June 18th through June 22nd when approximately 35 children, along with youth, parents and volunteers were present for VBS, under the leadership of Tracy Smith, Children’s Director. The theme was “Operation Overboard”, with focus on learning to depend on God, daring to care for others, claiming Jesus as their own and following Him in order to change the world. Sessions featured Bible storytelling, music, crafts, games, food and fun for the participants. Through the creative efforts of the Collins family, rooms were turned into ocean vistas and the home of fascinating creatures such as Ocho, the pink octopus, playfully dressed and portrayed by Dana Clayton. Thanks go to the dedicated volunteers from CRUMC for making learning about Jesus exciting and fun for the children. These children are our future disciples who will in turn make a difference in living and loving like Jesus.

“A Future with Hope; Loving like Jesus” was the theme for this year’s Annual Conference (AC), held at the Raleigh
Convention Center. Pastor Sang Park and Dorothy Walker, Lay Member represented Chestnut Ridge UMC among the 1,479 clergy and laity who were registered for this time of holy conferencing.
2012: The Year of Conferences General Conference was held in Tampa, Fla. in late April and in July the Conference of the Southeastern Jurisdiction will be held at Lake Junaluska, where new bishops will be elected to serve in their jurisdictions. This is significant, as our newly named District Superintendent, H. Gray Southern is one of the nominees for bishop. Over the past four years The Council of Bishops has challenged the UMC for change. As noted in the NC AC District Transition Team Report, this vision of the Council of Bishops stated “for the sake of a new world, we see a new church - a church that is clear about its mission and confident about its future; a church that is always reaching out, inviting, alive, agile and resilient. We see a church that is hope-filled, passionate, nimble, called by God, and courageous. It is a church that is passionately committed to the mission and vision of the Wesleyan movement. This church takes risks to serve the poor, reach new people, and search continuously for creative ways to help each person grow in grace, love and holiness”. This challenge called for change, a very deep change. The role of the District Superintendent was studied by a task force who believed that the Spirit of God has been leading us toward a church that builds cultures of discipleship that grows discipleship in leaders, who then lead others by example into discipleship. As presented at 2011 AC, the lay and clergy members made the decision to reduce the number of districts from twelve to eight and begin that process of change.
2012: The Year of Change Following 2011 AC, a District Transition Team of clergy and laity was named and began the work of creating a new order. Subcommittees and others worked to address four areas that included Visioning, District Lines and Names, Property and Leadership.

2012 NCCUMC Annual Conference 2012: A year of Change (continued from page 2)
Visioning: In summary, the role of the District Superintendent (DS) will move from being primarily supervisors and administrators to focus on mentoring, coaching, vision-casting, teaching and team-building. The DS will aid local pastors and churches in being disciples for Christ, seeking and bringing souls to Christ for the transformation of the world. District Lines and Names: Number of Charges
• Corridor District (Chestnut Ridge UMC is one of the charges) 94 H. Gray Southern, DS
• Beacon District Richard L. Stone III, DS 64
• Capital District Jonathan E. Strother, DS 91
• Fairway District A. Ray Broadwell, DS 73
• Gateway District Samuel Wynn, DS 98
• Harbor District M. Francis Daniel, DS 80
• Heritage District Donna M. Banks, DS 68
• Sound District Linda L. Taylor, DS 91
Property: Following much prayer, discussion and discernment, it was decided that all district parsonages and offices would be sold. As of the date of the Transition Team Report, two parsonages and one office have been sold, two parsonages are under contract, offers have been received on two other parsonages and the others remain listed on the market for sale. The Transition Team recommends that the funds from the sale of the parsonages be placed in an account to be used for paying housing allowances for the eight district superintendents.
Leadership: Along with the named District Superintendents, job descriptions were created for Assistant to the DS, District Receptionist, District Administrative Coordinator and District Systems Administrator. All available technology will be used for communication and to create a “virtual” office for the DS. After presenting the new paradigm to the 2012 AC, clergy and laity made the decision to move forward with the Redistricting Plan although there were questions about the constitutionality of the changes. The Bishop has 30 days to respond to the questions and then present the issues to the Judicial Council for consideration.
Other News: We bid farewell to our beloved Burlington DS, Bill Gattis as he retires, effective July 1
st. We are grateful for his wisdom
and leadership during his tenure. We can be assured that God has great plans that follow his 45 years of ministerial servanthood and we wish him and his wife, Irene, the very best. Bishop Al Gwinn will be retiring at the end of August following his eight years of visionary leadership of the NCCUMC. He and his wife, Joyce, plan to spend time in Florida before returning to their native Kentucky. We also wish them the very best in the future that God has in store for them. Stay tuned as we wait the outcome of the Southeastern Jurisdiction (SEJ) Conference at Lake Junaluska, which meets every four years and where our new bishop will be named and begin his appointment Sept 1
st. Our own new DS, Gray
Southern is one of 13 Episcopal nominees for the 5 opening positions of SEJ Bishops this year. AC will meet in Greenville for 2013-14, Wilmington for 2015-16 and then back to Raleigh for 2017-2018. For more information about the NCCUMC and daily reports of the AC, go to: http://nccumc.org and follow the links. As we enter this Future with Hope while loving like Jesus, I want to thank you for the privilege and honor of representing Chestnut Ridge UMC at Annual Conference. Dorothy
