November 2008

The Instructional Technology Team is pleased to present the Chesterfield County Public Schools Technology Expectations for K-12 Students. This document defines the expectations of what K-12 students should be able to do at each grade level using technology for learning.

The goal of this document is to help students develop vital technology literacy skills to integrate throughout all content areas in order to be able to succeed and thrive in the 21st century. These expectations will assist curriculum and instruction to identify and incorporate the goals to enrich and engage learning experiences for all students.

This document contains the following items:

- Technology Strands: The expectations are grouped into five strands at each level (elementary, middle, high). This identifies the concepts and learning outcomes required for 21st century learning.

- Student Skill Expectations K-12: This section identifies the student learning outcomes that can be observed and measured by teachers. It features the CCPS technology resources to be used to meet the goals. The International Society for Technology Education (ISTE ) and Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL ) for Technology are aligned to each learning outcome.

- Technology Continuum: This section illustrates at each grade level the skill development (Beginning, Developing, Mastering and Advance Level ) for students to demonstrate the learning outcomes.

These expectations should be integrated into the general curriculum and not taught in isolation. As students develop the skills and concepts to use in daily classroom, school and home activities, they will be prepared for society and our workforce. With a full curriculum in our district, it is essential to integrate the appropriate use of technology to enhance the learning and teaching forour students.

The Department of Technology is committed to work with each student and teacher to enrich their lives and experiences using various technological resources. We must provide them with the best possible learning environments to foster critical thinking, innovations, and problem solving to better our society. To get results with technology integration, our greatest asset (humanware ) must be nurtured, cultivated and continuously developed to ensure that the invested technology tools placed in schools make a difference in learning.

LEVEL EXPLANATIONS

Beginning LevelAt this level, the teacher facilitates student activities through systematic and guided instruction. Students learn the basic technology concepts and steps to perform the skill through repeated practice.

Developing LevelAt this level, the teacher facilitates student activities through guided instruction with opportunities for independent practice. Students apply the basic technology concepts and skills at their own pace demonstrating the fundamental steps through various learning activities. Repeated practice is necessary to master the skill.

Master LevelAt this level, the student demonstrates the ability to consistently utilize the technology skills to complete work or tasks independently. The teacher serves as a facilitator with the students’ activities. Students fluently use the skill in group collaboration, projects and curriculum tasks. Opportunities are provided for students to explore working at their own pace in and out of the school. Students clearly uses the skill without additional guided instruction and relate how to teachers how to use the skill to complete curriculum tasks.

Advance LevelAt this level, the student demonstrates the ability to apply higher-level thinking skills to complete in-depth work or tasks. Students multitask, problem solve and synthesize creative ways to utilize the skill with rigor and relevance to meet the curriculum goals. The teacher serves as a facilitator with the students’ activities. Students work with others using the skill seamlessly in group collaboration, projects and curriculum tasks. Opportunities are provided for self-directed work and leading a curriculum project without direct guidance or instruction.

Technology Literate …

to possess technology skills that support learning, personal productivity, decision m

aking, and daily life.

Six-Year Educational Technology Plan for Virginia, 2003-2009

The Com

puter/Technology Standards of Learning identify and define the progressive developm

ent of essential knowledge and skills necessary for students to

access, evaluate, use and create information using technology. They provide a fram

ework

for technology literacy and demonstrate a progression from

physical manipulation skills

for the use of technology, to intellectual skills necessary for information use, to skills

needed for working responsibly and productively w

ithin groups. Com

puter/technology proficiency is not an end in itself, but lays the foundation for continuous learning. The focus is on learning using technology rather than learning about technology.

To become technologically proficient, the student m

ust develop the skills through integrated activities in all content areas K

-12, rather than through one specific course. These skills should be introduced and refined collaboratively by all K

-12 teachers as an integral part of the learning process. Teachers can use these standards as guidelines for planning technology-based activities in w

hich students achieve success in learning, com

munication, and prepare them

to meet the challenges of today’s technology-rich

world of w

ork.
