NEWSLETTER OF SAUL MIROWITZ JEWISH COMMUNITY SCHOOL ADVERTISING SUPPLEMENT TO THE ST. LOUIS JEWISH LIGHT FALL 2012 With cheers and fanfare, Saul Mirowitz Jewish Community School welcomed its first student body — 165 children in kindergarten through eighth grade. St. Louis’ first pluralistic Jewish independent school brings together students from diverse Jewish backgrounds. “We love the diversity that lives within our walls,” says Cheryl Maayan, head of school. “Our students will be a generation of leaders who can work well in a diverse population.” The students also are benefitting from the combined resources of both schools and from the infusion of a multi-million dollar campaign for excellence. “Creating the school offered the opportunity not merely to combine two schools, but to incorporate best practices from top-tier schools around the country,” says Maayan. The new school maintains small class sizes and uses only best-in-class curricula for every subject area. iPads, laptops and SmartBoards give students opportunities to interact with technology. Immersion adventures allow students to learn in real situations and to explore natural ecosystems. the merger has attracted national

attention because it is the first time

reform and Conservative schools have

successfully merged. st. louis’ first

pluralistic Jewish independent school

brings together students from diverse

Jewish backgrounds. “we love the

diversity that lives within our walls,”

says Cheryl maayan, head of school.

“our students will be a generation of

leaders who can work well in a diverse

population.”

the students also are benefitting

from the combined resources of both

schools and from the infusion of a

multi-million dollar campaign for

excellence. “Creating the school offered

the opportunity not merely to combine

two schools, but to incorporate best

practices from top-tier schools around

the country,” says maayan.

our Bistro Kids Chef AJ moll prepares all of the school’s meals from scratch using only locally sourced or organic foods — including vegetables from the school garden. every meal includes servings of fresh fruits and vegetables. Food is prepared in a supervised kosher kitchen, and families who choose to bring lunch from home do so knowing that their decisions will be honored, reflecting of our commitment to respect diverse definitions of Jewish practice.

Preparing for 5773mirowitz students entered 5773 with a handful of breadcrumbs

and a small polished stone. it was a twist on the age-old tradition of tashlich. the crumbs they cast off into water,

symbolically ridding themselves of behaviors they would like to change, and the stone they

held tightly, symbolizing behaviors they would continue to embrace

during the new year.

it’s mid morning at mirowitz, and

it’s true! movement is like miracle

exercise can supercharge mental

aerobic movement enhances the

factor (BdnF), the hormone that causes

the brain cells to form connections with

one another.

what awaits the students who have been nurtured

with a connection to israel for 8 years? A flight on

el Al and 10 days filled with meaning.

the land of israel becomes their classroom as

they travel to places where history was made. the

8th grade israel experience cements all they have

learned during their years at mirowitz.

the following are excepts from the blog

they created during their journey:

The food! We love it! We had a great day, visiting Independence Hall, the exact place where lsrael became a nation exactly 64 years ago! We’re learning so much. And did I mention that the food is great? — Daniel

A siren started and everyone stopped what they were doing and stood up. We were lost in thought about soldiers who had been killed in battle. Songs were sung and excerpts were read. lt was very moving, and hard for us to imagine. l went to sleep still thinking about it. — Noah

We arrived at th e wall, and l didn’t have any real epiphanies. That all changed wh en I was writing my note. l have written tons of Kotel notes before, but only at camp on lsrael Day to be sent with oth er people. This was th e real thing, and l wanted it to be perfect. l had to weave my way through th e crowd of people to place my note. l was literally hovering over anoth er woman, but l didn’t care. l stuck my note in and touch ed th e wall, and as l did, my eyes did water a little with th e emotion of th e moment. – Melanie

Digital Age Learners An auction at our gala raised more than

$70,000 to fund digital-age learning, and our campaign for excellence stretched those dollars

even further. After all, the definition of literacy today extends beyond reading and writing. Children

today must be proficient with technology that will allow them to creatively extend their abilities.

mirowitz students begin using ipad apps as early as kindergarten, produce and present powerpoint

presentations by second grade, and can make graphs using excel by the time the graduate. they

become proficient with garage Band and imovie, understand blogs and wikis, and know how to

manipulate images. they learn how to collect data and how to verify the credibility of a source.

they are digital-age learners!

i am so glad that mirowitz exists as a

pluralistic school for the whole community,

and am certain that so many more

success stories will come out of it.

though i am now

four years removed

from my day school

experience, i still

reap its benefits every day of my college

life. going to a small private school was

challenging at times because of its size

and academic rigor. however, it was

because of these challenges that i

learned to be a leader in the Jewish and

greater communities, and in the

classroom. day school also gave me the

sense of Jewish identity that all young

Jews in America need. i took those

leadership skills and my identity, and

was a part of some fantastic, enriching

activities in high school.

those experiences and my academic

record set me apart in the college

application pools, and now i get to

attend the ohio state university with

an amazing scholarship. thus, my day

school experience didn’t end when

i graduated; i’m still affected by it

every day.

our VisionA vibrant, socially responsible and

inspired Jewish community led by educated,

capable, energetic, joyous, compassionate,

ethical and inquisitive leaders

Between the ages of 10 and 15, children

undergo profound changes in every

aspect of their being. they make critical

choices, cement attitudes about

learning, and allow their peers to shape

their values and sense of self-worth.

the mirowitz middle school

experience is organized to respond to

the intellectual, emotional, physical,

spiritual and social needs of early

adolescents. Adopting best practices

from middle schools around the country,

we have developed a top-tier academic

program that combines an in-depth

study of science, mathematics and

literature with the richness of Jewish

intellectual tradition. Adventure trips

each year enhance personal growth,

strengthen teamwork skills and offer a

deeper understanding of our collective

responsibility to better the world.
